That was cool. I know what to really work on. Constant position. Only a few in America actually stay in position at all times.

Thats exactry right...where i come from the coaches would spend lots of time on position and handfighting and then moves. If you watch the olympics or any intrenational tournament, you would see the freestyle position in every wrestler and i think that Americans have trouble adopting to that standse and position in handfighting.

hey over hooks pwn

if u hip bump the guy while his back is still straight up he's gonna lift you and slam u to tomorrow. You should get a whizzer and pressure in to flatten him out but i do agree with you the next step we be a neck-wrenching 3 quarter.

I have noticed the same thing many of you mention below. I talked with keith lowrance about this and he pointed out the same thing Ernie did. The other thing keith pointed out was that the russians never leave their feet or hips in front of you. Constantly working to the 15* angle. Thus beating everyones short offense or leaving it ineffective.

He is so right...anyone who has taken bjj finds this out really quick it is about position before submission. This idea always gives you option...once I began training in bjj long after finished with wrestling I figured this out. It makes you so much better because you know techniques but now that you are always trying to stay in good position you have limitless options with varying setups. You react to technique triggers based off what your opponent does. Essentially it allows you to relax and flow with your techniques.

this guy is right.... at all level people think technique is about learning moves...... like the person who know the most moves winss......it about getting in good postion.....usially the person with good postion wins

So based on this video - why would anyone need all the extras on Technique wave?

Shouldn't we get back to the basics and drill position?

i'd like to get a firm breakdown from a guy like this or any other top level coach or athlete as to WHY position isn't taught as much as "moves" are (or at least what their opinions are about why we're so behind the Russians from a positional standpoint)

with the exception of a small number of top of the line youth and high school programs in the nation, most wrestlers don't really learn how to wrestle until they get to college (if they go after a good college program)
getting flashes of brilliant technique and positioning from elite guys during camps, etc. then going back to a "regular" room doesn't cut it, it needs to be there every day
WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO TEACH YOUNG WRESTLERS POSITIONING?
not sure what the Russians are doing, but it seems hard to teach a lot of people just solid positioning, all they want to learn are the moves and it takes a while for them to "get it"
so what's the best way to "sell" these positioning principles to our young athletes?
maybe Americans get "bored" more easily than athletes in other countries, i don't know
just thinking out loud here

id like to see any russian get in on my legs without getting thrown 2 there back. i love when people dont chase my legs and keep there back straight. makes it easier to 3 quarter and hip bump.

I've been going over a ton of stance and positioning with my colleague and he has commented over and over that the most important technique in wrestling is our stance. I think this echoes those ideas and reflects what the Russians teach. If somehow position can continued to be taught to our youth, I believe we'll see the foundation get stronger and stronger. Throw in some Eierman abilities in scramble situations and we're there as a nation.

Technique Tuesday with break down of the Russians

Ernie Monaco who has trained multiple NCAA Champs and Olympian gives us a reason in his mind why the Russians are so superior. He follows that explanation up with a simple shot where you have an option to go to one leg or the other. Its nothing crazy or Cooperman like by it brings it home the importance with his explanation in the beginning.
