That is slick stuff...ignore the haters...anyone who has watched any wrestling in the recent years knows that this isn't necessarily the only defense, but it is definitely a valid defense.
Funk is not just wilding diving between the legs or trying to roll the ankle over your head. There is a systematic technique to good scrambling. It isn't your "go to" defense either. However many wrestlers use it effectively on all levels and anyone who has ever wrestled knows how annoying it is to be in deep on a shot and end up stale mated. Most of your comments seem really ignorant. If I were you I would stay off the message boards for awhile.
The technique is a perfect scramble move. Alot of time people find themselves in a situation and they do not have a move to get themselves either the advantage and a takedown, or even just a stale mate. The only way to learn how to deal with scrambles like this is to wrestle them life Knwonig a move to advance the position is a great way to be prepared for any scramble in any match. I will use this technique at my practices, and stress that it is an option if you find yourself with a bad sprawl, and put in a bad and uncomfortable position. Good work with the technique. Short, effective, and to the point. Thanks
hey brandon han, you clearly dont know anything about wrestling so just be quiet. the purpose of a funk roll is not too get a takedown, it is to continue the scramble in your favor. you are just plain ignorant buddy.

Many of us have seen this in freestyle matches and if you have then you can visualize this as a linking move in a scramble, perhaps not the finishing move, but a reasonable way to continue to defend after someone has already beat your defense.
Congrats to Tony on being accepted to Harvard where I am sure he will accomplish several worthy life goals.
I have seen your comments for the last couple of weeks and I must say no one in America cares to hear your point of view on how bad these techniques are. Personally, all I have ever seen you do is bad mouth people. Let me ask you something, what are your accomplishments. I mean if we are going to take your advice, I would like to know your qualifications? There is a reason that these guys are on Technique Tuesday, and guess what, there is a reason that you aren't on here and that is obvious. Before you ask, yes, I wrestle, yes I coach, yes its college and yes its D-1, yes I've had All-American and yes i've had National Champs. This isn't to brag, this is to clarify that I Do Know what I am talking about. The reason for this message is I would appreciate if you would stop with the negative comments on voluntary technicians. Tony - you are the man and good luck at Harvard, I hear you can beat up the old man now, don't read into these posts, the day you take advice from Brandon Han is the day I retire.
mc said: Brandon Han, askren's funk doesn't usually work? Your such an experianced coach, have you seen his dvd's? The funk that he teaches are basically simple leg passes off of different shots/positions. Funk done right isn't wild scrambling, it's a series of moves which take you from a poor situation to a takedown.
ok that makes a lot of sense. it's just that all i hear everyone talk about and see is that funk roll series that i've seen work maybe 2-3 times successfuly (1 of them by askren against herbert in ncaa finals). thanks for clearing that up.

i think that this is a new generation of wrestling, john smith has always said that wrestling is a sport that is constantly evolving. we are wittnessing that evolution right now

"every funk roll i've seen has either failed or they've just ended up in a bigger scramble. i've seen it work maybe 3 times perfectly."
wow i see funks work all the time you obviously haven't seen very many matches in your lifetime or you are a complete tool because the funk has become a very common defense
Seems like there are a lot of wrestlers out there that have not been taken down yet. Some of you should try wrestling at the next level. Mitch Clark was very good at this whole funk series.

I'm a coach, i watch way to much wrestling on youtube and other sites, such as flo. i've seen tech that i think works and tech that i don't think works, and then there's always trial and error, which for me, the funk system doesn't work, and i've seen it work very few times, sorry if it seems like i'm bad-mouhting askren, i'm just saying his style doesn't always work.
you were born in 1991.. How great of a coach can you be? You saying some moves don't work tells me you don't know what you are talking about. Moves work differently for different people. Oh, and you have to PRACTICE the move so it works in a match.

I'm pretty sure that is the point, B.Askren was phenomenal in scramble situations. To me the goal of the "FUNK" is to take an opponents advantageous offensive position and turn it into a scramble which you initiate, and therefore have a high percentage chance of scoring off of, or at very least avoid being taken down. If you crap talking geniuses pay attention this 18 yr old kid says that this is a move you can use when/if he beats you on a single. This is obviously not the the best counter to a single leg, nor the first one to look for. I'm sure Tony Buxton would tell you that if you asked.
why do people have to talk about the person or move being shown..chances are the person in the vids will kick your as*..stop talkin
thanks..if you like the move good if you dont like it shut up
This IS Cary Kolat's Signature Move series. This is nothing new, come on FLO you gotta stay on your toes! How can you have a HS Senior showing one of our countries best wrestlers moves?

Can you please send in some of your technique! You seem to bad mouth everyone on here. Please send some in. ....or is it "those who can do and those who cant just complain..."
and yeah, i did see him win both his ncaa titles, but u know what i saw? BASICS. high-c's, singles, stand-ups, and every time i see him try that funky he always ends up in a scramble.
Brandon Hancock said: but if you call this funk, it's pretty awesome, unlike that "funk roll" stuff ben askren pulls that 95% of the time doesn't work, even for him.
that must be a joke, the fink roll is incredibly effective at nearly every level. do you even wrestle?
Brandon Hancock said: but if you call this funk, it's pretty awesome, unlike that "funk roll" stuff ben askren pulls that 95% of the time doesn't work, even for him.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA... didn't work for ben askren? I guess you didn't know he won a hand full of ncaa titles did you. youtube some of his ncaa finals matches, he hits it in almost all of them.. YOU FAIL
How can you losers bash a high school kid on his way to Harvard. what is wrong with you people? You know he was siked and nice enough to do this and probably will come on here to see if people like and appreciate what he's offered us here. He's going to Harvard nuff said. For those of you who don't think this works go check out the Burroughs vs leen match. Leen uses this exact move in the third and almost scores but the ref calls them out. Red dog would you say two NCAA champs is high level enough for you? dum fuks.
annnddd said: Red Dog, go ask Brent Metcalf if funk works... pry sure his finals match wasnt "low level college or hs" level, some ppl are just great at funk and putting themselves and their opponent into positions as to which they can score from it... pretty sure metcalf doesn't use funky stuff, maybe a little advanced stuff, but not funky. pretty sure that's all scrambling, but that's just me.

Red dog do you ever watch college wrestling?? Many times the guy in the defensive position has good defense and will bury a guy down there leaving openings like this. Just because a high school kid is showing it does not mean its only a hs move. I am willing to bet he learned this from 1 of the best technicians ever (his father) who would make a great DI college coach.
This move will work if the man tries to finish the single leg from his knees. But if the single leg guy gets to his feetlike he is supposed to do and lifts his opponent's leg 5½ feet in the air, this defense is a non-issue. In short, this defense works against guys who don't know how to finish single properly, great for high school and low level college wrestling where most guys try to finish leg attacks from their knees leaving themselves wide open to an array of funk like this move.

Tom Brands did this in his match against Joe Gilbert at 6:18.
that this kid is ranked over a lot of wrestlers in the country that would beat him up, because his dad is the coach of blair.
