Campbell is flat insane. Hit a clinic not long ago and he showed his outside step High C. It's got to be the most unstoppable move I've seen. And of course, you pull up his Bronze medal match and what move does he hit? Yep this very same outside High C. One of the most technically sounds wrestlers the USA has produced, EVER. A magician on the mat.

Same practice Gable used to run, even down to the 'sprint 3 laps' end. Don't fix what aint broke, I guess.

You think Metcalf goes hard?

Michigander October 3 at 3:20pm
I never said that the athletes that are at Iowa now are not athletic, they just don't rely on their athleticism to win matches, they rely on conditioning, FOR THE MOST PART. There are exceptions, but you don't see many Darrion Caldwell, Jordon Burroughs, Mike Poeta (who is white, but very athletic) coming through the Iowa program on a consistent basis.
This is the standard for wrestling in the world, count the Olympians and medals in the last 30 years, OK State right behind in the last 30 years.

Goach Gwood October 3 at 3:04pm
Michigander I cannot think of any University of Iowa wrestlers who were not athletic, McIIlravy, McGinness, Whitmer, Ironside, both Zas, Brands and Steiners, Zapital, Ryan. Who are these unathletic wrestlers that you are talking about
#116
Coach Gwood October 3 at 2:58pm
Dan Gable's 1st Ncaa Champ was African American his name was Chris Campbell @177lbs in 1977

i got the chance to go to the Iowa hawkeye intensive training camp and Metcalf was my leader. he was the most disciplined hard working person i have ever met.

did u see dat guy get tossed...lol
#89
Anonymous Coward January 3 at 10:28pm
part of it is their in-your-face style.
every wrestler in this room is trained to never let the other guy break and to always push the pace. it makes for an intense practice.

Anonymous Coward January 3 at 6:08pm
wow that guy still is practicing w/ a broken neck lmao

When you have someone like Doug Schwab to beat on you every practice its hard not to be National Champ.

What an intense workout. I can't think of any other D1programs that will match this...

"crying" sounds Metcalf makes from 9:30 to 11ish are sounds of giving 110% when he's completely exhausted. No wonder he's so conditioned

Trueblue, that is like saying if the economy goes bad under a president it is his fault, not really the case. A lot of variables are in the equation.

Well lets say they have made iowa better, they arent exactly great leaders when it comes to expanding the sport of wrestling. With the spotlight and fame for so many years wrestling under Dan Gable fell off the map. His only direct responsibility was Iowa and he did a legendary job. But if you look at the global results of wrestling, while he was the major figure in wrestling, wrestling had a tragic downfall. The results speak for themselves.

Anonymous Coward November 23, 2008 at 12:53pm
I'll never understand why some people do not like Iowa. They win by simply out working their opponents. It's honest and blue collar. Gable and now Brands have have not only made Iowa better but they have made wrestling in America better.
Iowa wrestling is great! Thank God for Gable. USA Wrestling should be thankful that this program is back where it should be, thanks large in part to Tom Brands.
luckly no injuries at 1:35 with 4 matches on two circles

Tap Out October 12, 2008 at 11:47am
Cali now we're comparing high school to college? I would say there are at least 30-50 programs with coaches from the gable era who have brought that same philosophy to the program. I have been in practices thaat were intense like that. Caliwrestling, we had those machines in our room and they were called rail runners. not sure if that is correct or not
#46
Caliwrestling October 12, 2008 at 7:19am
What is the machine called at min 6:30 that the kid is using?
We had some in college but i haven't seen them since.
Who are they made by and what is the name of them?

Tap Out. I would disagree that intensity is intensity. Intensity coming from top ranked college guys is much different than the best intensity coming from a decent high school kid

No duh these guys are badasses. You don't have to have a video tell you that. Just keep up with all their tourneys and duals. But this video does add to their badassness.
#36

i went to the iowa intensive camp this summer and this video is no joke! That is a full room of badasses!

Nate Moore is gettin' worked on the entire time. Goes 2 show you how big a jump it is from the best in high school 2 the best in college.
Don't need another video! The Hawkeyes say and do everything that needs done! PERIOD!
#27

hey ugh... do you listen to music in competition? nope.
#26
T October 9, 2008 at 1:04pm
Looks like a great intense practice. However, I doubt they will be able to continue at that pace until March nor do I think the coaching staff will plan like this all season. In fact, I don't think many will being that we are only in October. Looks like a solid team with hard working wrestlers.
#25
ED THE DOOBER October 9, 2008 at 12:47pm
THAT WAS THE MOST BADASS WRESTLING VIDEO I'VE EVER SEEN. THAT IS WHY IOWA IS MY FAVORITE TEAM. SO MUCH INTENSITY!
Metcalf gets to work out with an olympian, who gets mike and does Jared ever workout with em? Didn't see Terry today....what a room of brawlers!
#15
Winning Is Fun. October 9, 2008 at 9:01am
Gable had a theory that if you need music in the wrestling room to push yourself that you will not be able to do the same when there is no music during competition. Ahh but what does he know.

I thought I work hard in practice, but after watching this, I have a whole new perception on what working hard is. Besides that, I'm speechless and in awe of what the Iowa wrestlers go through everyday. Amazing vid Flow! I'm pretty sure, but someone please clarify for me, is that Doug shwab wrestling with Metcalf? Those 2 were giving it their all and acting like practice is life or death. And who was woopin' up on Nate Moore?
These guys are so high level, to keep that intensity so long, all season is like superhuman! Talking to an Iowa NCAA Champ over the weekend and he said, "Brands gives so much, you just want to please him". It looks like every guy on the team feels that way. Plus the new staff, this is the standard, by which college wrestling is measured. I wish I could wish them luck, but they don't need it.

Iowa "Short Time Workout"
Tom Brands puts his Hawkeyes through a tough workout that is mostly live wrestling. The scenario is that both wrestlers are behind in the match with little time on the clock. October 8, 2008
ha anyone see that ld at 3:37 ??
