Saitiev makes 2 quotes abut Slay I find ridiculous:
1. "I let this person take me down in the second round"
Does that make sense to ANYBODY? Saitiev has never "Let" anyone take him down. Also, is was not in the 2nd round, but 27 seconds into overtime.
2. "I think he shouldn't have been in the Olympics at all"
Again, what is he talking about?? How can anyone say that a wrestler who can beat Saitiev, let alone 4-5 other Olympic grade wrestlers shouldn't be in the Olympics??
The guy definitely has some pride issues...
He's The Best....one time Olympic Champion....OK....BUT three-times gold medalist in freestyle...The Soviet Union’s Alexander Medved was the only previous three-times gold medalist in freestyle wrestling after he won the first place in 1964, 1986 and 1972.
.......That Slay guy disappeared for good. He's not even worth my thoughts. If somebody asks me a question about him only then do I remember, otherwise he doesn't exist for me."
– Buvaisar Saitiev, The Silent Gladiators 2001
Here is a past response from Saitiev on Slay.
"I let this person take me down in the second round. I didn't even know who he was. I had to look him up in the Internet. I think he shouldn't have been in the Olympics at all, he was like a plane fly-by, he flew in, flew out, and he didn't have much to offer. Maybe they fed him something. He appeared, caused havoc and disappeared. Kind of like that Rulon Gardner, but Rulon at least fights there somewhere. That Slay guy disappeared for good. He's not even worth my thoughts. If somebody asks me a question about him only then do I remember, otherwise he doesn't exist for me."
– Buvaisar Saitiev, The Silent Gladiators 2001
Slay seemed to not be in awe of Satiev and took it to him right off the bat. He also received some favorable calls that placed him in a 3-1 lead within the first 45 seconds of the first period.
Sorry to see Doug and Mike not put it together, they both looked way off. Like something or someone got in their head. Not typical of their style, i'm sure there is something there, has to be. I have never seen that drom them before had notheing to do with stlye.
Anyone jump in here!!!
Anyone know how in the heck Slay beat this guy? I mean he wrestled like Iowa, and it works guys it flat out works!!!
Dude Thanks for the interview I'm sure it wasn't easy getting this guy's ear for a minute. I bet you had to drop Joe Williamson's name to land the interview.
He told me he's a legend in Russia since Russian nationals.
until we depart with folkstyle and college wrestling and wrestle the same two styles as russia and everyone else in the world, we cannot compete on a medal count with russia. Case in point yards to meters. USA wrestling should be ashamed at some of the athletes they had out there or didn't. Za did not attempt an offensive movement why show up. Cormier didn't even do that schwab little offense at all attempted one commited shot got him another period barely. Mocco was bean bag wrestling, and it almost got him a silver medal but he did not capitalize on the bean bags. I loved the action on the offensive wrestlers really exciting minus the bean bags need a different system there. The referee that screwed the guy from sweden needs a different job, guys work to hard to have a ref make a call like that he should not be allowed back or the other referees who backed that call. leave politics out of wrestling exactly, IOC said that and that is what they should do give the guy back his medal and leave their politics out along with the referees. If referees what to make policy run for office. That reminds me off calls in the ncaa tournament with Iowa's or Oklahoma's coach on the sideline and the referees bending over backwards for some of their guys, same politics different place. Italy always capitalize on referee's scandals. Again If USA is serious about becoming a wrestling power it needs to go to free and grec in high school and college. I watched every match of freestyle and I really felt bad for two guys one of them got a medal and one just missed out. the german at 84 ton of offense was 40 seconds away from the bronze against the world champion from russia the guy deserved a medal heartbreaker. I know you cannot give two golds away but if you could it would go to the guy from lithuania who wrestled his heart out against the world champion from turkey and gold medalist wow. There should not have been a loser in that match. That was some exciting stuff, until it got in the upper weights and not as much action. the 120 gold medalist actually had some action which is why he does not need to wait on that bean bag. The russians made it fun to watch satiev is one of a kind. We did get one medal and he did not stall he was very offensive no bean bag for cejudo. He is training for freestyle not college good idea thats what the russians and other countries do they dont get seasoned on folkstyle they win worlds at nineteen and twenty. USA needs to make sure that every guy on the team at least has an offensive movement next year in their matches at worlds and next olympi cs.
i wish he would have asked saitiev about his friendship with chechen warlord president Ramzan Kadyrov and how he felt about what was going on in georgia. i'm sure he believes in ethnic cleansing
Martin~~Great Interview...listen to what he is saying..training,food,aerobics,not always go go go on the Wrestling....just a different way of training...
martin,
great interview, but i wish you asked him why he thinks russia is so much more dominant that the US in international wrestling right now and what he thinks is wrong with american wrestlers/the american wrestling system. but i understand that your time was limited as were the number of questions you could ask
champions don't run their mouth...our culture has produced way too much of a bravado attitude...you can have the confidence in the world, but that's not winning you gold medals
Not only are we watching quite possibly the greatest amateur freestyler in the long history of our sport, but he is also able to speak Russian and throw his voice in English translation at the same time, WOW!
I wish he would have asked him about his loss in Sydney to Brandon Slay.... It would have been interesting to see what his thoughts are about that match...
That was probably one of the most interesting interviews ever. MY FAVORITE ON HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great questions Martin.
This dude is bad ass!!!!!!!!!!!!
what a bad dude!! very nice, and i think he respected martin for the great questions. since you were telling him how good he is. awesome you got to talk to him martin the best of all time. thnaks for that interview!!!!!
Buvaisar Saitiev wins his 3rd Olympic Gold Medal in Beijing 2008 and goes through the things that got him there. Thanks to Izzy, Vladislav Izboinikov for the translation. August 21, 2008
