125: Jim Martin, 1x champ, 2x finalist, 4x top-4 finish
149: Scott Turner, 1988 OW
184: Rob Rohn, 1x champ, possibly the most famous win in NCAA history

Read article on 6-22-08 Long Island Challeng. I saw Pete Galea's name. I went to college at Iowa State with Pete. I also used to regularly beat him in one on one hoops.Of course then he would take me to the wrestling room and extract his revenge, I am trying to reach him just to say hey. Was working in Iowa with the State but can not locate him. Appreciate any help. Dave

Oklahoma wrestling is where it is at. This state is rich in tradion. This team I put together has (18) national champions, (7) runnerups and a total of (36) all americans with just these ten wrestlers. Everyone on this team was in the finals at least 1 time and all but 1 has at least 1 championship. To show that as a state we premote wrestiling all the way through thier careers they all stayed in state to wrestle in college also. This team also produced (4) gold medals, (1) silver, (1) 4th, (1) 6th at the olympic level. This is just a short list and I can't tell you how many all americans and champions that did not make the list .

118 Rex Peery 3x Ncaa champion
126 Kendal Cross 3x all american 6-1-3 olympic gold medal and 6th
134 John Smith 3x all american 2-1-1 olympic (2) gold medals
142 Leroy Bailey 3x all american 5-4-1
150 Kenny Monday 3x all american 2-2-1 olympic gold, silver and 4th
158 Pat Smith !st ever 4x champion in ncca history
167 Mark Branch 4x all american 1-2-2-1
177 Tyron Lewis 4x all american 5-3-5-2
190 J.J. McGrew 2x all american 1-7
HWT Richard Hutton 4x all american 1-1-2-1

Rick,
The 11 were from District 7 as I also graduated from that district in 1995 so I personally knew or know many of these wrestlers. Also, including myself and many in the district and in my high school,Canon McMillan, at that time, were truly not focused enough on our school work. Alot of wrestlers ended up in D2 and D3 and even many great athletic wrestlers including state champs ended up sadly to say doing absolutely nothing with their talent that God had given them. I have gotten into coaching almost mainly because of this, I stress academics in my program as much as technique and work ethic because without all three you cannot become a complete wrestler that makes the most out of a career. Out of our district we have brought home about 7 or so D2 National titles during this same time era. I recognize you as a respectful person and a good advocate of this sport. Take care.

wow. thats pretty impressive if all those guys were from the same conference. Shore Conference in NJ has emerged to be a national power and recruiting hotbed, but the problem with many of the guys is that they go D2 or D3 because their grades or scores werent good enough for a D1 school, and in reality, the same guys then have a history of also tearing up D3 pretty good. I wont go into the debate of D1 v. D3 here though.
It would be cool to see how much even better some of the shore guys would do if some of them would have been more committed to school in hs, and decided to go on to bigger schools for more national exposure at D1.

Im sure that D7 over there probably sees the same image though with your guys

How about THIS:

11 of the PA HS Team from 1990 - 2000 are from one conference, the WPIAL, District 7. If I were to compile a team of all time from District 7 it would probably be way more accredited than any district or conference in the country.
Also, Kurt Angle graduated before 1990 or else he would be on the list...
Thanks for the support!

How about THIS:

Name me a better line up of high school guys from the SAME CONFERENCE. The Shore Conference in New Jersey has put out some serious contenders. Going by the whole state, NJ/PA/OH/IL/CA/IA/MN are generally comparable.
But by a single high school CONFERENCE, try this on for size: (Im skethy on each weight class specifically and where they did college, etc., but they are still a tough one to beat, considering they are all from the SAME CONFERENCE
Clendenin
Luke & Jude Skove
Glen Pritzloff
Doug Parise
Frank Edgar
Worthy
Frank Molinaro (3x Champ; Penn. St redshirt)
All of the Roy Brothers
Bryan Stout (4xAA at Clarion)
Winston (4x st. champ, #1 ranked nationally in hs; yet to see in college...)
Damion Hahn

These are some great wrestlers but PA has some serious talent. Look at the two PA hs line ups. The one listed below is pretty sick. Most of them were NCAA champs. Not sure anyone can beat a lineup of nearly all NCAA champs and most of the rest multiple AA's. Hunter, Moore, Angle, Kolat, Hughes, Jones, Letters, Trenge....

I still stand by the Iowa team being the best ever.

I put an OR team together. Something that's interesting though is that almost all of my OR picks, not only wrestled in HS in OR, but wrestled in college in OR. They didn't need to leave the state to get it done. With the exception of two wrestlers in Larry Owings and Bobby Janisse. Had to leave a few greats off the list like Glen Garrison, Matt Lindland, Joe Russell, Shane Webster, Howard Harris, Larry Beilenberg, Greg Gibson, John Miller, Travis West and Broderick Lee and Roger Weigel.
Oregon
118-Rick Sanders-3 time D2 Champ, 2-time D1 champ and 3 time finalist, Olympian
126-Bobby Janisse-Wrestled for ASU until he died.
134-Robin Reed-Probably greatest wrestler of all time
142-Dan Hicks-2 time NCAA Champ, Wrestler of the Decade at his weight
150-Larry Owings-NCAA Champ, 3 time finalist
158-Dan Russell-4 time D2 Champ, multiple AA in D1, World medalist
167-Dan Conway-NCAA Champ
177-Les Gutches-2 time NCAA Champ, Olympian
190-Greg Strobel-2 time NCAA Champ, Olympian
HWT-Jess Lewis-2 time NCAA Champ

Here is a California College Team not in a 10 year span. I thiink the 10 year span was only for the High School team.

118: Adam Cuestas (Bakersfield) - 2x NCAA Champ
126: Stephen Abas (Fresno State) - 3x NCAA Champ
134: Eric Guerrero (Oklahoma State) - 3x NCAA Champ
142: Gerry Abas (Fresno State) - 3x NCAA Runner-Up
150: Adam Tirapelle (Illinois) - NCAA Champ
158: Marty Kistler (Iowa) - 2x NCAA Champ
167: Dave Schultz (Oklahoma) - NCAA Champ
177: Marks Schultz (Oklahoma) - 3x NCAA Champ
190: Mark Munoz (Oklahoma State) - 2x NCAA Champ
HWT: Stephen Neal (Bakersfield) - 2x NCAA Champ
I think this team may have the upper hand on the NY team.
Just My Opinion.

As well as ohio with Schlatter, Heskett, Rowlands, Kemp, Fried. The list goes on and on. If this was a "you can't find 7 states that are better than NY challenge" you guys might have a chance.

Nj Is Tha Best Eva!   June 22, 2008 at 10:35am
103. Joe Dubuque (2x st champ, HS national champ, 2x Ncaa champ)
112 Matt Valenti (2x st champ, HS national runner up, 2x NCAA champ)
119 Dave Esposito/Mark Manchio/Foley Dowd (pick your poison. Fargo champ 3x state champ and NCAA runner up among them). Dowd may be the best for HS purposes.
125 Mike Grey (4 x state champ, fargo champ, already frosh AA)
130 Corey Cooperman (multiple prep champ, multiple fargo champ, multiple AA at lehigh)
135 Damion Logan/Sean Gray (3 x state champ, multiple prep champ, multiple AA) I'll take Logan in a close one.
140 Mario Mason (won everything there was to win in HS, beat Olympic team member at Fargo)/Brett Matter(2x state champ NCAA champ)/Mark Worthy (injuries ruined NCAA career but was one win away from NJ's first four timer)/Labe Black (one loss in HS). I'll take Mason in a very close one.
145 Zach Esposito (won everything there was to win in HS, NCAA champ)
152 Don Pritzlaff (3x state champ, 2x NCAA champ, Junior World champ). Darrion Caldwell (3x state champ, pure athlete, ready to further shock the collegiate world). Its tough to leave Caldwell off the team but Pritzlaff is too much of a BA.
160 Scott Winston (undefeated in HS, Fargo champ, HS national champ)
171 Glenn Pritzlaff (3x state champ, NCAA champ)
189 Damion Hahn (nobody touches hahn's in High School career except Kolat)
HWT Steve Mocco (see Hahn as a heavy weight).
What say you?

Forgot Kellen Russell (Hs national champ) and Jordan Burroughs (HS national champ). Grey can go 119 and put russell in at 25. Jordan would push for a spot somewhere in the middle. Hey anonymous coward not to split hairs but you're not sticking to the guidelines that your state has set. But while on the topic, our 3 x'er caldwell dominated your 4 x'er O'connor twice this year. And espo was only a soph when he lost to jantzen who was a senior. He later avenged that loss as well. NJ > NY but topic for a different time. Right now its NJ 96-06 > NY 70's.

Ok hllywdboc1 here's the nj team again with their hs and post hs accomplishments and you decide if Dubuque Valenti and the rest can't win. And yes this is a ten year period. And I forgot to add mario mason. Got anyone that can beat him? Or hahn? Or Winston? Or Mike Grey? or the majority of that team? I believe this meets your guidelines. If you can't admit defeat on this, there's no helping you. Let's see the match by match break down.

103. Joe Dubuque (2x st champ, HS national champ, 2x Ncaa champ)
112 Matt Valenti (2x st champ, HS national runner up, 2x NCAA champ)
119 Dave Esposito/Mark Manchio/Foley Dowd (pick your poison. Fargo champ 3x state champ and NCAA runner up among them). Dowd may be the best for HS purposes.

What say you?

lol you guys honestly think ny is good. they are bad compare to nj. do guys really think a 4x from ny can beat a 2x from nj. hell no. maybe if you had one state tournament you guys wouldn't have so many 4x or 3x. nj is hardcore and the list below from nj would demolish that ny team. also keep in mind that the ny guys would not know as good technique as the nj guys due to time frame. wrestling evolved quite dramatically going into the 90's.

Why are we even mentioning college accomplishments if its a high school lineup you're looking for? Seems pointless. Its almost like you took years to come up with the best criteria to make your state look its best, then finally found it, but want to include college accomplishments in with your arguement for why they are the greatest HS lineup of all time. omparing one animal to another(HS to college) doesn't make sense. especially during the before 1990 era in which most of these guys only saw national competition at FR/GR nationals and that's about it.

What the criteria should be is, pick a year when HS wrestlers overall really started taking off with the National tournaments(Fargo, Beast, Ironman, NHSCA, Reno, etc.) and there were more than just local teams there. Then only mention their HS accomplishments and that it.
Then draw up a senior team only, mentioning their college accomplishments(NCAA) and Senior level accomplishments(FR/GR).
BTW, no time frames. That's dumb, IMO.
Mixing all of them together to make your point makes no sense.
And if I were to wager any state has the best, who could argue with this team-
118 Barry Davis, 3X NCAA, Olympic Silver (HOF)
126 Terry Brands, 2X NCAA, 2X World Champ, Olympic Bronze (HOF)
134 Tom Brands, 3X NCAA, 1X World Champ, Olympic Gold (HOF)
142 Dan Gable, 2x NCAA, 1X World Champ, Olympic Gold (HOF)
150 Bill Nelson, 3X NCAA, Olympian (HOF)
158 Jim Zalesky, 3X NCAA (HOF)
167 Bill Smith, 2X NCAA Olympic Gold (HOF)
177 Glen Brand 1X NCAA, Olympic Gold (HOF)
190 Lee Fullhart 1X NCAA, 1X US Senior Freestyle Champ
HWT Tolly Thompson, 1X NCAA, World Bronze

Here is my California selections for your weights based on my limited knowledge of CA wrestling. I do not pretend to speak for the entire state of california when I post this:

118: Stephen Abas- Olympic silver medalist, 3X NCAA Champ
126: Eric Guerrero- Olympic Team member, World Champ, 3X NCAA Champ
134: Azevedo- Olympic team member (1980 when Carter boycotted the Olympics), World Champion, NCAA Champ
142: Gerry Abas- 3X NCAA FInalist
150: Jamil kelly- Olympic Silver medalist
158: AdamTirapelle- NCAA Champ
167: Dave Shultz- Olympic Gold medalist, 2X NCAA Champ (You all should know)
177: Mark Shultz- Olympic Gold medalist, 3X NCAA Champ
190: Dan Chaid- NCAA Champ, 2nd, 4th
HWT: Stephen Neal- World Champ, NCAA Champ, 2nd
As faras HS during a 10 year time span... I think that you can sy NY has the best in that capacity, but it is so narrow a criteria who really cares? Please corredt any mistakes I might have made.

the college team is listed below. Here's the high school team. I'm assuming this is based on HIGH SCHOOL accomplishments? I've only claimed Blair guys when they were originally from NJ. aka no Mark Perry.

103. Joe Dubuque 112 Matt Valenti 119 Dave Esposito/Mark Manchio/Foley Dowd 125 Mike Grey 130 Corey Cooperman 135 Damion Logan/Sean Gray 140 Brett Matter/Mark Worthy (injuries ruined NCAA career but was one win away from NJ's first four timer)/Labe Black 145 Zach Esposito 152 Don Pritzlaff 160 Scott Winston 171 Glenn Pritzlaff 189 Damion Hahn HWT Steve Mocco. Great Fans   June 21, 2008 at 2:29pm
You seem like two good guys who are obviously fans of NY wrestling. But the reality is that PA and OH are pretty far ahead of the country as far as depth looking at AA's and NCAA qualifiers each year clearly shows that. Now, as far as top all time teams go 4 states are very close: the two mentioned above and NJ and CA. In addition to Mike Freedman's post, NJ had mike frick, gene mills, chris campbell and bruce baum. CA: abas, guerrero, tirrapelle, neal and the schultz's to name a few. New York is a slight step below I'd say they come in 5th although Iowa and Illinois may have something to say about that.
