- See Less - Stephen Abas cannot be compared to any other wrestler who ever walked on the mat. He is a different breed of wrestler. His wrestling style and personality blended to make a cocky, creative, and vicious competitor. Abas redefined the possibilities in the wrestling world with his amazing acrobatic moves, which frustrated and embarrassed his opponents. His arrogant composure only compounded their frustration.
Consistent with his unique style, Stephan Abas went on to wrestle at Fresno State, away from the typical Midwest power house schools. On his journey he became a four-time All-American and three time NCAA Champion. After college he dominated the freestyle national circuit and became an Olympian. Abas won silver in the Athens 2004 Olympics.

Abas Knows Wrestling July 19 at 10:14pm
The 1st time i heard my man steven the great talk about finding the flow i had no idea what that meant. now that i have benn wrestling for a number of years i can totally tell what he means when he says that there is a flow to wrestling. its hard to explain but in every match you must control the flow. i must thank steven for teaching me of the flow. long live the great steven abas creator of flow...steven your the man
steven you may not have won that match but only true champions are the ones who keep their heads up after defeat. LONG LIVE THE GREAT STEPHAN ABAS
ps: all you haters can lick my you know whats cejudos good but cant match the exciting style abas has created
Abas has made a name for himself. His love for the sport and commitment as a show man, as won a lot of fans over the years...its his fan that are venting here-in one way or another he has inspired...and it was hard to see him go out like that...by the way...THIS IS ABAS' PAGE.
-ABAS FLOW IS UNMATCHED!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry all you Cejudo fans-YOU CAN GO TO HIS PAGE!!
Did i say Abas flow is UNMATCHED!!
BTW...I'd sleep in Stephen Abas bed (or should i say 'walk in his shoes'-im not a ) any day, but -I'M NOT WORTHY!
ARE YOU?? (..doubt it)
whose the sick people hating on our 55kg representive going to beijing. He's done nothing wrong but win and pursue his dream. don't cry when you awaken all the people that support him and defend him. If abas did something wrong, its his fault. he made his bed let him sleep in it. If he didn't want to be in the spotlight maybe he shouldn't have won a medal, better yet maybe he shouldn't break the law.
The only crime being committed here is someone I don't know is DISSING someone I know personally. WHY ALL THE HATING!!! Call the police if he's committed a crime. The man misses making the Olympic team, has tore-up knees probably needs to get surgery (...maybe both knees), and you can type away trying to smear Stephen Abas name...YOU ARE A SICK INDIVIDUAL!! You should seek help immediately!!
Remember: STEPHEN CAN DATE WHO EVER HE WANTS - GET OVER IT!!
overhere in cali. u can smoke all the weed in the world.... in most places is legal and where it's not, cops dont even care... seriously.... what has a little weed ever done to anyone.... nothing, so there....
THIS IS TO ADVISE YOUR FORUM IS BEING ABUSED FOR PURPOSES NOT INTENDED FOR. I STRONGLY BELIEVE IT IS TIME TO DELETE THE POSTING COMMENTS AREA AS YOU HAVE DONE BEFORE. IN THE BEST INTEREST FOR ALL OF THE WRESTLING COMMUNITY.
personal is personal. you gossip monger need to shut ur face, cause one bad apple does spoil the bunch. real men do not bear false witness. if there is a girl wrestler you are not helping her but instead disrespecting her in a public forum.
People will always look for something to tear apart the great. Why do you all keep digging through the trash of abas' life trying to demean him and degrade his character. Everyone has their past, many of you probably much worse than stephen's. Its a shame to see that people like yourselves live in this country and degrade not only a wonderful athletes life, but also his competition with racist comments. I am embarrassed to be apart of the wrestling community.
"And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?"-Jesus
Like all great men the cowards try to tarnish in some way. Keep on truckin traitors your only making the masses hate you more. Long live the Abas mystique.
Weed is a given! Anybody active in wrestling knows that about him!
The first girl wrestler has a temper promblem? So Abas got arrested and eventually did jail time this season ( CHECK THE BOOKS)! that's some temper she must have! the other girl has low self esteem? Riiight! So USOC bans him from training at the olympic training site in colorado spirngs ( CHECK THE BOOKS)! Wow that must be some low self esteem he caused her to have! Wow that dirty mexican you guys keep talking about sounding pretty clean! ...TO BE INFAMOUS. THE INFAMOUS LEGEND STRIKES AGAIN
WHAT THE HELL IS EVERYONE TALKING ABOUT? hes been smoked weed? which i highly doubt because they are tested for that. From what it seems people are saying he messed around with some girls? can someone with the real facts clear this crap up because its starting to sound like one big giant ball of rumors.
One of those girls was his ex-girl friend-she basically is the one that had the temper problem & the other girl was found to have self-esteem issues. And yes they were wrestlers and one is on the olympic team.
Thank god he did not make the team. What a liability for American wrestling if he did! can't go to the came because of legal issues or unable to leave the country because he caught a charge. Thats everyones role model. Thats your hero. I second the motion not to send anyone of my kids to his camps, especially my daughter!
THE SUNSHINE STATE LOVES STEPHEN ABAS AND WILL CONTINUE TO SUPPORT HIS ATHLETIC ENDEAVORS. WE PRIDE OURSELVES ON LOYALTY TO THE REAL AMERICAN HEROES. GO OBAMA IN 2009.
(2 losses his freshmen year to the same guy @ the NCAAs & a loss when he went up a weight (soph. yr.) to wrestle the #1 guy @ 126 lbs. named Eric Guerrero. Then went undefeated his last two seasons.
No wonder He got so tired, I just heard he was incarcerated part of the season and then was banned from training at the otc, from unrelated incidences. How can someone be in the best of shape going thru all that! NOt focused for sure!
Here I am trying to make sure the last post on a great American wrestler is a positive one. We continue to say negative things....PLEASE go get a life & DO A RANDOM ACT OF KINDNESS...to make up for your hating...Its almost been 2 weeks since the match...Cejudo won Abas lost...WHATS THE POINT?
Actually you are only good as your last match. Look at KOBE, he's getting dissed by Shaq in raps for losing in the finals. So actually thats a Losing combination! Half mexican and Half Mexican is the winning combination
i believe that as long as Olympic athlete doesn't commit a crime, he/she should be able to do whatever they want. So back off our Wrestling role model Abas and send that olympic cheater Chavala Chollo back to Tequila where he belongs.
Abas comes from a family of dancers...His brothers Gerry and Norman were one of the original B-Boys (breakdancer) on the west coast...an OG from '83. His oldest brother and sister use to enter state-wide contest in disco dancing, locking and popping.
By the way, Abas is not mexican...his mom is Irish and his dad is Filipino. We know the Irish have fight and those pinoys know flow...look at those dancers on MTVs- America's Best Dance Crew...there are alot of filipinos on there.
Stephen Abas walks it how he talks it. Old school gladiator style. No excuses, No drugs and No regrets. Made the most of what was a bum deal. Truth be told we won't see one of his kind for a while. Thank you.
Lesson #2 (for CA DAD): Teach your kids that there are all kinds of people out there, due to upbringing. Some with lots of positive qualities and a little negative qualities and some with lots of negative qualities and a little positive qualities. And lots in between.
Teach them to see the positive qualities in everyone, and yet don't be sway from proper upbringing.
IS probably a Spic to who is here illegally, go back to meHico with the chico and go back to living on the streets and running from the federales who are also cheaters
Still can't see his wrongs..I guess I'm just blinded by the things he's done rights. If you were a good dad- then your kids would know DRUGS ARE BAD. So pay more attention to them- they know alot more then you think. IF YOU DON'T TALK ABOUT IT THEY MIGHT JUST EXPERIMENT ONEDAY.
Here's a lesson to teach your kids: World class athletes are people first and role models second.
As someone who knows both of these wrestlers personally on and off the mat i can't believe what idiots some of you sound like. First off the raciest comments are totally ridiculous. They're both mexican you stupid ! Abbas isn't full but what does it matter? They are both great wrestlers and we should be happy to have either one of them represent the us. Steven had his turn now it's Henrys. Stop takin and respect the athletes.
Wrestling is a small community and if your doing something wrong, the fans will know. I know about his habit and other situations as well. let me reiterate as a parent i would not send my children to his wrestling camp, just like i wouldn't send my kids to a PAC-MAN jones Camp.
You people who bash are just losers and/or just closed-minded cavemen. Or maybe you're a fat @#$% or just hate in general. Sorry you have to look at athletes as role models when that is your daddy's responsibility. Sorry it will be OK! But vent on daddy- loser.
Do you know how to contact Abas? If you do- I would like to tell him how much he has inspired my wrestling...he may not be a life role model because I don't know him outside the arena. That's OK...That's what dads are for ;>)
Everyone knows how to
to pass a test before and during competion. Take a hair sample and see what happens. Plus you don't sound too convincing with your arguement sounds like you condone it. Alcohol or weed? pretty sure he does both. Hence why he got so fatigued in his match. Didn't even give his opponenet the respect to wrestle him to the end just give up and make it look like your injured. Just go get high, Hey alot of athletes do. Probably why he left he shoes on the mat, so he doesn't have worry about getting tested anymore. all you cejudo haters quit your whining and using racist remarks and respect him for being clean and beating the olympic silver medallist. Wait a minute if you want some, just contact him i'm sure he can supply with some of Cali's Best and you don't even have to worry about getting pulled over.
All the athletes get drug tested, so i don't believe it in a second that he uses anything to get into his flow. Everyone knows he does drugs???...what are you talking about? By the way, what kind of drugs? If I can wrestle like him, I want some of what he has : )) You know in major Cally cities, the police don't even care if you're smokin weed in your car. They are alot more liberal out there...maybe you cavemen should rethink what's worse for your body - alcohol or weed? DO SOME RESEARCH!! By the way, Abas has never failed a drug test.
Everyone knows he does drugs. Some of the best athletes in the world partake in extra curricular activities. Look at michael vick, ricky williams, and thats just the ones we know about it. Maybe thats how he gets into his flow.
Abas had a style, a flow...he was the original flowrestler. The world recognized and respected his skills...At his best, which we haven't probably seen yet, Cejudo will never gain the recognition as Abas...
Abas is not racist nor is he a druggie! Why do you want to keep trying to smear his name. His achievements and impact in peoples lives is positive and massive...but go ahead & throw your stones though- losers. Cejudo needs to get higher then a 10 grade level of education...If these guys want to be a role model, then HC clearly is not one!
Let's here it. Is Abas a druggie? Is he in some kind of trouble in Denver? Wow the worst you can say about Cejudo is he's a mexican? Oh I forgot he told the truth and said Abas was playing possum. Maybe a few facts before you start tearing someone down. I guess it doesn't matter to a racist.
Stephen Abas has inspired many many young men to shoot for greatness. He will be forever remembered as one of the greatest wrestlers in the world. His match in the 2004 Olympic finals against our Batirov, though he lost, demonstrated a style that has inspired the younger russian wrestlers.
the old come out and the new come in. it's part of Life. the more skillful, tactful and better Wrestler did not prevail due to injury. however his acheivements will never be undone and his persona still reigns supreme. Stephen Abas is our Golden Boy the rest can go spit.
You should at least respect him for how hard he works and how he has commited his life to the sport we all adore. Instead of beashing him behind his back.
i doubt the mexican is a role model. What is so model of him? he can all the car window s in a single bound. As far as Stephan he's real citizen and samaritan.
the young olympian is a real model. While the truth is abas played his role as great wrestler on the mat and a terrible role model off the mat. Sorry to bust everyone's bubble of their golden boy. But its at least true, while saying four years ago the dirty mexican was acrossed the border was not.
Who are you to past judgement on Cejudo like that. He's a great wrestler and deserved to win. He deserves to go to the olmpics becasue obviously he beat the best to get there. Your just a racist punk who hids behind the scenes who never had the skill, courage or drive to get to that level of wrestling. Or to be at any respected level of wrestling.
that mexican was selling dog burritos in the street on the other side of the border. While stephen was representing the USA in the olympics. He is a true role model for our sport unlike the dirty mexican who went after him knowing he was hurt.
abas's knee was torn going in. He still took out Simmons and Azevedo en route to Cejudo so while a torn ACL is never a small deal, it didn't seem to bother him much during those matches. In my opinion Cejudo did focus on the knee but not in an blatently illegal manner. Its a grey area though. I would say that Abas's conditioning also played a part in the third match. I believe abas losing was due to a combination of those two factors. a healthy in shape abas makes cejudo look like he did in the 2nd match. We lost a great one.
i have not seen the matches. But did the mexican try to hurt abas, if so why wasn't he disqualified. Is that the only reason he won? was abas gonna win had he not hurt his knee. It sounds like his knee was hurt already. Just want some clarification?
Mr. Stephen Abas one of the all time greats in Wrestling. His career will never be overshadowed by anything. His character will never be in question. He is a walking Wrestling legend. Good luck to his future endeavors.
Stephen Abas is great, he bought alot of charisma and attitude to the sport. No matter what the outcome was for Abas in the trials, he had alot of guts going out on the mat with such a serious injury and even after defeat not using it as an excuse. No matter what I will remember Abas as one of the all time greats of the USA.
how does the #2 #3 #4 get the same side of the bracket. while the other side has a #3 that has not wrestled in many many years. the true warriors took themselves to the limit. honestly what side would you have rather had. and how does an Olympic Coach live with himself going against one of his own - no class should have stay neutral brands.
i agree i think he convinced himself that he was more ready than he really was. capoiera is gonna get you ready for capoiera not an all out battle with young kid full of piss and vinegar
Gift?, i think this kid earned his olympic berth. he had to beat some very good wrestlers to get here. He beat a former olympian as a young kid so everybody is upset. Guess what alot of people are upset that harry lost too, but its not talked about as much because it wasn't in the finals. Upsests happen its the olympics, someone always comes out of nowhere. just accept it. no one should be called derogatory names here. was he supposed to bow down to abas becuase he earned a silver medal. lets be real.
Forever The Peoples Champion! June 20, 2008 at 2:53am
Stephen Abas will remain the mark of excellence for a long, long time. I know this type of Wrestler only comes around every other generation, if that. His exit from competition happened how it happened, but the masses saw it was his to give away. Only wish the young schmuk cejudo would realize the gift he received.
hey ca wrestling dad, you are taking third hand information about abas and dont truly know the thruths about stephen.you are just as much an idiot for taking this info and displaying such a comment here and taking it for gospel.I would not want to have a conversation with you or have my kid take advice from you in life because you are an grown ass adult and you come on here and cry your point of view based on 3rd hand knowledge of someone, hey for example i heard your kid has a drug problem so i would not want him to wrestle for us here in chicago.
As a dad, i wouldn't send my kids to one of his camps. i heard some things about him that is unbecoming of a role model. I would not want my kids especially my oldest to be around him. His wrestling is commendable but at some point he also must be accountable for his actions off the mat as well. Just my opinion. If he is your inspiration that's your opinion.
Stephen Abas is awesome! Thank You for your impact Stephen, you have inspired me. You went out there with a torn ACL and performed at the highest levels. You almost made the USA olympic team without wrestling competitively for 8 months. But your career isnt defined as "almosts" but your amazing style.....3 NCAA titles at Fresno State, multiple USA National Championships and World teams and a Olympic Silver Medalist. I will always remember your style and attitude and use it in my life.
if he could beat the current national champ, and previous years national runner up. he was ready, i just don't think he was ready for the best of thru with a young buck that ain't afraid. he look like he was tired towards the end. the tournament ain't no joke, it will wear someone who cuts alot of weight or isn't in the best of shape out. look what happen to lester.
don't forget these guys have bad blood for eachother. theytrain in the same room i beleive.
Abas is an old man and is ready for retirement. Oh wait, he did retire. Isn't that what old people do? And this 7th grader, well he's still in 7th grade. What do you expect, but he will still be reppin' for the U.S so stand behind and give him his props.
Stephen Abas will forever be remembered for his skills and fight. I would not compare him to Mike Tyson but rather Elvis, cause when he was on the mat it was extraordinary. Now it can be said "Abas has left the building".
Stephen is all class and humility at the same time. On the mat confidence is a must and after Wrestlers shake hands it is only right that both believe they will win. However off the mat is where the respect and humility must be shown if you are a true champion at heart. And just like Tyson the style is entertaining, exciting and unpredictable - for some of those reasons there will be another Abas or Tyson.
To the below poster: Here's the difference, IF Abas is a little overconfident and y HE has reason to be. 3x national champ nobody in US has touched him in years. He had a torn ACL. And he should still be on the team.
abas isn't humble. He was humbled! what do you think his interview would have been like if he won. He was throwing China t- shirts into the crowd after each round looking ahead to the olympics and not the next round. looking at all his recent videos his looks body looks fine. He's getting forty thousand donated to him, plus 1500 a month and he hasn't wrestled a full season in 4 years. Maybe it got to his head.
his match in the semi's he took a long injury time out and stood up and took the national champ right down. Then his first match in the finals he was waving his finger at his opponent and standing up and sticking his leg out, mocking and not respecting his opponent. his actions show that he was gonna walk thru the trials. maybe just a lil too overconfident. It happens to the best athletes mike tyson vs. buster douglas comes to mind
Stephen did great! Considering he was wrestling a younger opponent and with one bad leg, he wrestled like the champion that he is. I am so glad that I was there to see his final matches. He's a warrior and will always be remembered in this sport.
Stephen Abas will never be forgotten. His skills are unmatched. The best in the Country, his knees, ankles are not. Who among us could even think of competing at this level with only one of his major injuries, let alone making alternate status as an Olympian. The man is a throwback from when Wrestlers were noble, humble and Men of true character. Stephen Abas will never be forgotten.
Not only can you tell that Abas is a tremendous individual by his past accomplishments, but simply by the fact that he gave this time to the media immediately after his dream was shattered. I hope he continues to be involved with wrestling, so others can learn from his mastery.
Now iam not trying to say that cejudo is not a good wrestler, but i just think that cejudo is a real y kind of guy. I can a sure you that cejudo will not achmplish half of what abas has. ABAS YOUR MY HERO, REMEMBER NO ONE WILL BEAT YOU MENTALY.
I really don't think there is enough to say about such a great wrestler and cl act. Steven, through out the years your style of wrestling has inspired me and, my whole team. Your pure dedication to the sport of wrestling is simply incomprable. You kind of remind me of like a brett favre, someone who will never choke or back down. I can remember before the match i was surrounded by cejudo fans, and once they saw the end of your third match, they all quickly wished that you would have won. Steven you have nothing to be ashamed about. You have inspired so many kids like me and i dont think i would be the same wrestler if it was not for you. ABAS RULES!!!
You've inspired many, Stephen. Come to Grand Junction, Colorado and work with our eager wrestlers. We think the world of you and the tradition you've established. You are a giant in this sport.

Stephen,
Thanks for being such a cl act. The poignant moment of retiring ones shoes on the mat is supposed to be just that - poignant. I usually get goosebumps, but this time my heart just sank. When my son turned to me and asked if he could send you $50 to help get you new shoes - my eyes welled. You and your family will know what's best. Know this as well - you inspire. You are a hero to me, my son, and many others.

You shouldn't retire, because maybe your knee will get better. You showed in the earlier challenge matches and the second round finals match that you still belong on the mat, my dad and I saw it live. You are amazing. If you decide to come back I can send you $50 from my allowance money to get new shoes.
dad
I have followed you since your days at Fresno State. You have showed true championship spirit in your wins, and you are a champion in the wake off defeat. Your influence has forever changed and benefited the sport wrestling. I was there when you lost and I was bummed for quite a few days. I hope everything goes well for you in your life
hey intresting it's probably an error in your post but you also stated the truth about both wrestlers giving props to henry , henry gives himself all the glory and talks himself up about how powerful he is even in person after the press conference henry was still talking about himself and how abas was nothing more than a street bump that needed to be run overwhat abas said showed was c l a s s !
I like how both wrestlers give props to Henry after the match. Funny considering abas has been off for over 3 years and was wrestling with one leg. Cejudo could have been a little more gracious and respectful to abas. Saying he was playing possum and just tired. IMO the special wrestler of the two is and always will be ABAS!
Steve...you will always be my hero bro...you went out like warrior...giving it all you got...you beat Americas best with one leg...you are an inspiration to me and I wont ever stop spreading the Abas style...love you brother
Stephen has spread his input into this sport a long distance, and has brought a new version to an old element of wrestling! I am sure he will continue to influence many more student/ athletes through coaching...
this interview will be one for the ages wow stephen how you can inspire another thru your interview sets off many things inside someone I hope you know how much you meant to us.
steve i had the pleasure to wrestle you in high school. i still rememner scoring 4 points on you, of course you cut me after you took me down. and i am always going to be honored to have had a chance to meet someone like you. thanks for all the memories. i know you will make a great coach at some program in the near future.
We all know that u are the true champ and winner of that match. Most guys wouldn't have even competed or even won a match with a torn acl. U the man and I'm blessed to have gotten to see a true wrestler like your self wrestle.
abas i think you already have shown the world what you can do man you have been great a warrior and a gladiator and you are helping this sport grow one day at a time one kid at a time you are cl man
Torn acl in left knee what a struggle he credits cejudo what cl he shows.Really cl of the sport man he hopes to inspire somebody he looks really distraught and it fully sunk in just hope he will see his way out of the depressed feeling he actually feels after that last battle
ps: all you haters can lick my you know whats cejudos good but cant match the exciting style abas has created
