well maybe its because MHSAA does not sponsor middle school huh? youd think that HS stood for high school right? thats why TCC never wins the BNC, and forever and always will be torn up by Petoskey.
I competed at middle school nationals 2 years ago, and was not penalized my freshman year. I am from Michigan, the great city of Traverse City. Traverse City Central High School
i hate michigan. and i have lived there my whole life. this rule screws so many kids of getting ranked in the nation because the cannot compete at frosh. soph. or junior nationals.
isn't this the same organization that just lost a multi million dollar lawsuit for scheduling its girls sports outside the normal season? maybe they'll go bankrupt and a new organization can take over.
Nice way to get the whole world of wrestling to see the backwardness of an outdated governing body in our state! I know if me and my brother had been able to go down there last year, I would have been suspended for the postseason here in Michigan and missed out on our schools second State Champ!
Jamar Whitfield, Jake Shulaw and Casey Randolph...... All three head coaches were banned from the postseason for supporting their athletes! And that governing body thinks that their ruling is hurting the coaches! What about those wrestlers who suddenly found themselves without their coaches when they needed them most?
It's funny that the MHSAA paid little to no attention to this rule, much less enforce this rule until late year. In 2007 when Jarod Trice HVW (Highland Park) won this event. The state of Michigan has had athletes and coaches participate in this great event from day one. Due to thier hatred of the HP coaching staff, and community. Now they choose to enforce this obscure rule?!?!? WTF? In the end it's the kids that are being punished. Michigan wrestlers can not participate in middle school Nationals. Or they risk loosing their freshmen year of eligibility. The same goes for fr, soph, and junior nationals. How are Michigan kids suppose to be ranked fairly if they are not allowed to compete at the most prestigious national events?
IS'NT THIS RULE LIKE DESCRIMINATION AGAINST THE BETTER WRESTLERS? PREVENTING THEM FROM PARTICIPATING COULD BE TAKING A COLLEGE EDUCATION FROM THEM. WE AS COACHES,WRESTLERS, AND PARENTS SHOULD FILE A LAWSUIT AGAINST THE MHSAA TO GET THE RULE CHANGED. WHY NOT THE GIRLS WON THIERS
The rule in Michigan prevents athletes from competing in National/all-star tournaments. If you participate, you will lose your athletic eligibility. The MHSAA feels that the focus should not all be on athletics but on academics. I agree with that statement but preventing kids from participating in national tournaments is not the way to go. All the students from Michigan that wrestled at senior nationals, gave up their chance to play any spring sports which effectively ends their high school athletic career outside of wrestling. For Coaches, they are not aloud to coach their athletes or else they face a suspension. All the coaches who coached last year got their suspensions reduced but had to sit out the post season and couldn't coach their athletes in the state tournament. Since this tournament is not an "open" tournament and you are technically supposed to have placed top 2 in your state, that is one of the hangups the MHSAA has. They consider it an all-star tournament and not everyone can participate, so if you participate you are violating the rules. These stupid rules prevent our athletes from participating in the fresh/soph/and junior nationals as well as senior nationals. These rules also prevent mighigan high schools from participating in other major in season tournaments like Ironman and Beast. This also prevented the great Davison teams of the past from wrestling Blair. These bonehead rules also prevented Brent Metcalf from wrestling in the Midlands tournament his senior year. Well I've gone on long enough of a rant. I think I've covered the stupidity of the rules pretty well.
Coaching in Georgia is the same. We are predominantly a football state and our rules really hurt dedicated wrestling coaches and programs. Our rules state that if the season is over and the kids are still in school you cannot work with them. They went a step further this year and made a rule stating we can't work with 8th graders either.
Basically no HS coach can work with any of his kids 8-12 grade until they are out of school and then have to stop once they resume school. The GHSA isn't concerned with getting better a as wrestling state just making ridiculous rules that hinder dedicated coaches.
This coach is one determined guy. He will not stop tell the mhsaa changes the rule on coaching and wrestling at this great event. Hats off to you on your quest. Your friend in wrestling Jamar Whitfield
yea this is the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the stupid rules and restrictions that cause mi. athletes to compete with one arm behind their back against other states. time to take control and give our kids equal opportunities and level the playing field for those limited scholarships!
What has wrestling become when a coach can't coach. A state has to restrict a sport and an athlete's success by imposing a rule that is outdated and idiotic.
I wonder just how much investigation the MHSAA will do to find out who the perpetrator is!!! LOL What a joke !!!! There is no good that comes from such a rule.
mhsaa should be ashamed of itself. What a ridiculous rule...this would never happen if there was some accountability there. The MHSAA is symbolic of a state in an econocmic crisis and is being run into the ground. Wrestlers still manage to survive and compete though!
who didn't even place..

THE mhsaa SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!
