- See Less - Brent Metcalf is one of the most anticipated recruits to enter college. He was undefeated in high school wrestling with 4 Michigan state titles. He also earned 6 junior national titles in the Olympic style of wrestling. College fans across the nation had to wait an extra year to see his return because he transfered to Iowa and was denied his freshman season by his former school. In 2008 he won the 149lb National Championship and was named the Dan Hodge Trophy winner.

He probably should have enjoyed this one a little bit. If he wanted to get so much better, he didn't really show it this year. He may never be a ncaa champion again. If you don't enjoy something like this why are you doing it??
wht are you tlking about?????
"who does he think he is...he doesnt even seem happy that he won hes so serious???"
wht do you mean, he just won a national title. the second you are happy with your performance in a match is the second you become worse.
stupid, and wht do you mean who does he think he is...... BRENT METCALF. dumb comment
i heard a couple rumors about dustin schlatter, the first is that he is moving up to 157 and the second is that he is redshirting this year to take care of his injuries, anyone know if this is true, it seems a lot of wrestlers moving up to 157... metcalf is a beast
Wow, umm yea brent seems really outgoing and fun. He prolly gets out and parties alot, just look at that tan. Haha but seriously 3rd person is about THEEE most intense thing anyone could ever do. If u look up Brent Metcalf in the dictionary you find the word intense and if your looking at the definition of intense i'll tell you what it is....Brent Metcalf!!!! No wonder people boo him
Geez, does he really have to talk in the third person. This isn't how Brent Metcalf wrestles, Brent Metcalf is better than that. What an ego maniac. It's like he's auditioning for WWE.
metcalf is cool as hell man. hes just very into wrestling. he loves it. its obvious he loves it so dont knock him for just wanting to be the best at the higher level above college.....i can understand him not being satisfied with an ncaa title because i myself am striving for an olympic gold someday. to be the best you have to set high goals and never satisfy. clearly none of you people understand this...keep your bullshti to yourselves though.
Didn't Scott Windton go 160 his senior year? Why would he be at 149 in college? It would be nice to see Scott Winston wrestle Justin Zeerip at 165. I think Zeerip might be a little tougher though, he broke his wrist his junior year and unlike Winston still managed to win the state championship with an undefeated season. Throw Ben Bennett into that group and it should be a good year at 165.
Caldwell is going 157 next year, so I doubt he will be pinning Metcalf anytime soon. I think we are going to see the Ben Askren syndrome next season. Guys are going to be going up and down in weight to try and avoid Metcalf. I doubt Gillespie would drop back down to 149. He is a definite title threat at either weight but it doesn't make sense to drop back down after you've spent a year bulking up.
Ron, Caldwell might pin him again? I mean it could happen but maybe Metcalf kills him. Lets just remember that Metcalf was NCAA champ with one loss the whole season and Caldwell had around five losses.
Alright everyone who thinks that Winston and Welch are gods ("welch went 2 midlans an beet college wrastlers!) just shut up because kids like them come around around every year. Yes, they're the best in their class, but they are nothing compared to Metcalf or the healthy Schlatter.
ron is an idiot he is comparing brent metcalf an ncaa champ to high school kids the only high school kid that would stand a chance is winston although i think metcalf would beat him and guy below me i think winston is 157 or 165 next year which i think is really stupid if he ges 165 i would say 149 would be best for him though he is to short for 165
this guy is amazing i saw him wrestle at the ncaa's and big ten although i think if schlatter did'nt get injured he would have beat this guy well i hope this guy good look at 149 cuz it is the toughest weight and a man named scott winston is gonna be at it next year and i also hear rumors of gregor gillespie dropping down to 149 and caldwell might pin this guy again he's got his work cut our but i hope metcalf luck next year
Brent Metcalf's really a class act, and nobody should be talking down on him. Competition is a great thing, but it's really funny when one begins to dominate and the others get sad and make themselves look stupid. Good job Brent ...Keep it up!!!
thiss guy is amazing i saw him wrestle at the ncaa's and big ten although i think if schlatter did'nt get injured he would have beat this guy well i hope this guy good look 149 is the toughest weight and a man named scott winston is gonna be at it nest year as well and i alos hear rulors of gregor gillespie dropping down to 149
vanilla gorilla though i do agree with you, he has a loss on the season, he got pinned by darrion caldwell. So you would mean next year he would have an undefeated season and the year after, not 2 more cause he isnt undefeated. I really wanna c him and caldwell wrestle in next years ncaa finals.
Metcalf will finish his college career with 2 more undefeated seasons and probably another Hodge. Face it, he is a mini Gable. No one will beat him for the rest of his college life. The only problem he may have is in freestyle, but he'll probably adapt and change hi style to be great there too. Brent Metcalf, 3X NCAA Champ. Bank on it!
hi honey please come home to mama----please quit wrestling tommy boy...what does he gots that i dont...i wore my corn cob out!!!darrion's starting to look good
Gyro, I would have to say Metcalf is the best wrestler at 149 this year. I mean he showed he was the best of the tournie and he had 1 loss on his record. Caldwell is great but I think he had five losses. Sometimes in a tournament the better wresler can get beat in an upset but Metcalf proved his worth this whole season. He beat the whos who of the 149 weight class and only came out with one loss.
Well VanSmash, that Metcalf placed higher in one tournament doesn't necessarily mean he's the best wrestler. But I agree with one point you argued, namely, that at this level the "bully factor" is not enough.
Gyro you don't just win matches by the "bully factor" or at least not at this level. Also I'm not sure how someone can say Metcalf isn't the better wrestler. He beat Jenkins three times and placed higher that Caldwell. Just look at their placings and records. A tank of gas just doesn't get you there.
Hey Brent, you are the best sport! I can't stand watching winners jump around and cry and hold their hands up after they win. I mean, it makes me want to throw cow dung at em. Real winners don't act like little wankin' kids! Thanks for not being an emotional nut-head.
Yep I agree with Yellow_Cake...Metcalf is great, but he'll have a tougher time next year. Metcalf is sort of winning by way of the the "bully factor"... or pure aggression. Well, it's pretty easy to adjust to defeat that...and there are tons of examples of this in the past.
I am a Metcalf fan, but I am pretty sure after watching those 149ers this year (I was there) that Metcalf is technically great but definately not the best in the wieght class. Caldwell and, oddly enough, even Jenkins seem to be better wresters...just not in as good shape.
Congrats Brent! You are one tough wrestler, and definitely more exciting to watch than Varner. Jake, no offense, you had an awesome season as well. :-)
You want emotion? go watch American idol. This kid expected to win and dominate in the process. If you've followed him at all you should expect nothing else in his reaction. Caldwell couldn't carry Metcalf's jock. Big deal, he got caugth once, we saw who prevailed when the title was on the line. I seem to remember Brands getting pinned by Alan Freid and then promptly kicking his ass the rest of their meetings. Metcalf is an animal and a lock for two more titles.
Here is the deal on the Caldwell/Metcalf. Metcalf is the NCAA champ and Caldwell is not. Caldwell has one win over Metcalf when he caught him in a spladle. Kudos on him for that. He was the better wrestler that day. Metcalf was the better wrestler in the tournament though and during the season as a whole. Caldwell had two losses in the tournement and Metcalf had none. Caldwel had like five losses on the season and Metcalf has one. You tell me who the better wrestler is.
LOL thats some pretty reaching stuff Ryan_x. He allowed Jenkins to win? Looks like Metcalf has owned that brother three times now. If Caldwell could own Metcalf again why didn't he use that skill to get to the finals and do it again? Why did he then lose to Churella?
Caldwell hit Metcalf with a spladle and tricked him easily in the first match and could do it again. Caldwell lost to Jenkins to allow his brother another shot at Metcalf since Jenkins was 0-2 against Metcalf and was desperate to show that Caldwell wasn't the only brother that could own Metcalf.
Ryan_x are you on crack? Caldwell would have pinned him easily? What did Caldwell place again? Oh and can you explain to me how Metcalf is cheating? LOL face it the kid won.
Man are people really attacking him for not showing too much emotion? Some people just show emotion in different ways. There is no need to make a big scene if you don't want to. Oh and to the guy that asked if he recovered from Caldwell's spladle he just won the NCAAs so I'm sure he recovered.
lol u guys don't know how funny it is to read a bunch of comments from people who are sad because their wrestlers got mangled by such a monster. And then to top that you guys all try to say that he's on drugs and mimicking brands. GET A LIFE.Brents here and will be whoopin tail for a long time. And keep talking caldwell, he mangled yor daddy, bubba, in the finals.

def on meds...NCAA should test for stimulants...and i hope peopel dont start to think u have to act like a lunatic to win after wathching him....Cael is the best and won w grace and humility ......the Iowa way makes wrestlers look like monsters and out of control
The way he wrestles is entertaining and great for the sport, its great to see that kind of dominance brought back to the sport. He's a brawler. I've got some friends in the Iowa program and they say this kid isn't feeling good if he isn't working out. It's great to see someone that works that hard succeed and get what they've earned. Great wrestler and great work ethic. Congrats Brent.
I have had the privilege of knowing Brent for the last 6 years and this performance was typical of the focus, determination and intensity that makes him who he is. He makes us back in Davison very proud.
OK Kristie, here goes...Mr. Roy Hall, congratulations on running hard practices in high school, you should be inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame next to Dan Gable, John Smith, and Dave Schultz.
I would rather see a guy leave like Brent did than jumping up and down or blow kisses. He has never been a sore winner, most of these comments are from people who don't even know him. How about some credit for his high school coach Roy Hall he had 4 of his wrestlers at the NCAA'S
Would it hurt to show a little emotion? What freaking planet are you from 'jacked'? If you can't see emotion, you're blind. Being grateful to god? First, not everybody believes in fairies in the sky. Second, even if one does, do you really think god gives a rat's ass about a wrestling match and has any part in the outcome. Cuckoo, cuckoo, cuckoo.
The honest truth is that many of the posters here, just like so much of the crowd in St. Louis, are just immature jealous losers. Grow up.
Gotta love the Iowa fans "Sorry rest of the wrestling world, you can still have the second chair fiddle" , just like Brent, a bunch of brain washed hillbillies!
You would think Brent could give a little wave to the fans (Mom or Dad?), he storms off like, go F yourself as he runs right by them, like they were a piece of garbage, what a set!
WHAT??? I'm not from Michigan but give credit where credit is deserved. Didn't somthing like 10% of the 2008 AA originate out of Michigan, not to mention past AA's
Why slam the kid? He just walked off the mat and straight to the media room. No time to calm down, no time to analyze his match, no time to relax. The kid was jacked, focused, and was still wrestling the match in his mind. Lighten up.
The third person talk is kind of funny.....but I am impressed on how focused he is. He had a slow start, and turned around and tore his opponent up. Congrats, Metcalf.....you deserve your title.
Iowa wrestling is right back where it rightfully belongs.
Why do people hate on him for trying to be like Brands? What is wrong with molding yourself after one of the most intense wrestlers of all time and an olympic champ? Is there something terribly wrong with that?
i thinks its funny how he says u cant be intense and up tight all the time...and everyone starts laughing...but he is a monster what ever gets it done.
You are all talking about Caldwell, maybe he was scared and didn't want to wrestle Brent again. If he is so awesome, the only way he can loose is if he doesn't want to win - ie face Brent again.
Michigan high school wrestling doesn't get enough credit. We produce some of the top wrestlers in the country. Congrats to Metcalf and all of the other NCAA AA wrestlers all over the country representing this great northern state! Flo...come visit us more next season. Great site!!!
Metcalf is a machine and the guy is intense!! Iowa is back - Brands has Iowa on top again. Say what you want but Brands' coaching, etc. but the 2008 NCAA team title is back in Iowa City. Iowa is gonna be tough for many years to come.
pathetic interview. Is Metcalf actually trying to talk like Brands? Not the same Brent Metcalf and dont like what I just watched and listened to. Give it a rest there is actually more to life
To the guy who said he would win it at 157: Are you on drugs? He edged, and I do mean edged, Lance Palmer by the skin of his teeth earlier in the tournament and now you think he would move up a weight class and not only do well, but you state WIN IT??? Are you insane? He would be crushed. Here we go, the legend is already starting to get out of hand. By this time next week, Brent Metcalf will have lined up the entire Olympic team and wrestled eacxh guy for 1 straight hour scoring 450 points on each one of them, the entire session would last 10 hours. I am just waiting for those types of ridiculous stories about the guy. Is he good, damn right he is, he is a very good college wrestler. Is he sloppy at times? Hell yeah he is, does he give up way too many points at times, damn right he does. He is still very young and needs a TON of work from a technique standpoint. Now go have a pleasant day.
do they not realize they are wrestling other humans that want it and work just
as hard and you just may not beat someone 30-0...there is no shame...his attitude is why other sports don't get it...quit talking in the 3rd person...
lucky girlfriend...have fun babe...
It is nice to see someone attacking the whole match. This is what wrestling needs, and you know it. One Metcalf match beats 100 Jake Varner 1-0 wins (yawn).
Easy people he just wrestled his butt off then was rushed right into a interview and just in case some of you loser don't understand what kind of zone he was in obviously never wrestled at that level, so easy press boys and check with him at the IOWA party back home when he had sometime to take it all in
what a homo this kid does not even show emotion, i dont care how good you are he just fricken won a national title and does not even celebrate. COLEMAN SCOTT IS THE MAN
Check out the action up close with live blogs, pictures and interviews coming from the mat at NCAA DI Wrestling Championships, St Louis at Flowrestling.org

A. he speaks in sentences and pauses like he is a machine.
B. Hes littler than i expected?
C. Who speaks in 3rd person?
Not cool..
1.) Dustin Schlatter - but its not gonna happen cuz dustins injury is gonna mess him up
2.) Gregor Gillespie - not gonna happen cuz he is at 157
3.) Mike poeta - not gonna happen cuz he is at 157
4.) Darrion Caldwell - not gonna happen because he needs to find a better team to train with first plus he is probobly gonna go 157

Best wrestler ever from Michigan.

Iowa wrestling is right back where it rightfully belongs.

i wonder if he will celebrate if he wins a gold?
