Hey FAN, Winston wrestles like Poeta. And Welch didn't do so great against that style, actually he lost by 14. Winston and Poeta would have been a better match.

Winston and Welch - Winston is exactly the type of wrestler that Welch performs well against. He is strong but not as quick. So Winston has improved since his soph year?? Don't you think that Welch has improved as well? FYI - In his jr. season, Welch wrestled in a tournament up a weight class (171) and faced both the defending state champ at 171 and the guy that would win the state championship that year in that class. Welch beat both of them by big margins as he normally does even when he was much lighter in bodyweight. I think the better competitor for Welch would be Howe....Now THAT would be a match to watch!

Jc State Champ   May 14, 2008 at 11:20pm
I think Winston and Welch would be a good match. The only reason I think it will be close is because Winston has size on Welch. Welch should be a 149 in college, not a 157 or 165. He cuts little to no weight for his weight at 160. I do believe that Winston can beat Welch, just not right now.

Winston Vs. Welch   May 14, 2008 at 12:35am
fan, winston and welch are neck in neck. If you watch a bunch of both of their matches you'd see that winston has exactly the tools to give welch trouble, and vice versa. Also, saying that they wrestled two years ago means nothing. Having watched winston in every state tournament he's been in, it's day and night between his soph. year and this year, and he won Fargo this past summer, nobody even touched him. Welch is by no means in a "league of his own."

Ya, Winston didn't even place at Fila jr, and lost to another guy who only placed one time in California state.

Welch took 6th at Midlands - Very impressive for a 17 year old! Winston just lost in the wrestlebacks at Fila to Luke Manuel who was beaten by Welch in the Cal State finals 2 years ago. This coupled with the fact that Welch already beat Winston 2 years ago at Fargo is a good indication that Welch is in a class all by himself and deserves his number 1 ranking.

how would you know unless they met and wrestled.Winston went undefeated in NJ.He would have been a 4 time state champ if he didnt get injured Frosh year. He's a tough kid.1 of the top wrestlers in the country.NJ has tremendous wrestling talent at the HS level.Being a state champ in NJ means alot.Especially to college recruiters.Plus having a NCAA champ as coach has been good for all Jackson wrestlers including Winston.

I agree. NJ is such a big headed State. They are in fact one of the toughest States out there. But just because you're a State Champ from there doesn't mean that you're some god. And too add to that Best Coast, Winston has even lost this year. To Cumberly of Ohio. Welch hasn't even been CLOSE to loosing this year, I would know, I think I was one of his closer matches this year when I lost to him 19-11 at Reno TOC.

Dudes- Wake up! While Winston was beating up on high school KIDS, Welch was thumping MEN at the MIDLANDS college tourney as the only high schooler invited. He took down NCAA #1 ranked POETA. R U kidding? He might not pin or tech Winston, but he would major him for sure. NO COMPARISON.

Get your facts straight. Winston wrestled Mendito with a 102 fever and was out of school the previous 2 days. He broke his nose at the All Star and if became infected. He was sick as a dog. I was there. He would crush Welch who is not nearly as strong and almosgot decked in the Calf finals.

Winston lost last year at the war at the shore and he lost to an Ohio kid at the Super 32 this year and he won a nail biter at the Beast. He is absolutely awesome, but on a national level he is probably around 5th which means he is sick good. Just think, Meneditto lost to him 3-2 in OT and Alex Meade of Delaware kicked Meneditto's a$$. Also, Winston did not wrestle districts, regionals and or states his freshman year where he was bound to lose at least 3 matches that year. I love Winston, he is what class and humbleness is all about. It's just the media hype that brings people to come out and put things a little bit more back to reality.
