Never saw this match before, great performance by Winston. Funny, seeing all these quotes about Welch, Winston just beat him at Midlands. It will be great to see both their careers develop.
On another note, the new jersey coaches who came up with that award for Winston should not only be embarrassed of themselves, but also flagged by the NJ coaches association. There are no givens in athletics, I don't care how good Scott Winston is. To have that award made, obviously ahead of time and hand it to him on the mat right after his match is completely disrespectful to all of Winston's opponents.

Well   April 17, 2008 at 10:34am
you know its impressive when people keep track of the last time you get taken down, welch and winston are completely different, welch will give up a take down and then win by 12, winston will be flawless and win by 5. cant compare them until they meet head to head which likely will not happen. welch is too pretty to head to dirty jersey

#66

Winston Over Welch   March 13, 2008 at 10:46pm
Winston is a beast and has perfect technique. Welch is nasty but so sloppy, and won't be able to score some of the garbage points he gets in ca states. Winston would beat him now, but it would be close.

#54
Bluehen   March 13, 2008 at 10:28pm
does anyone think scott took it too far with the celebration?

Jafo   March 13, 2008 at 4:22pm
Watch the Welch-Poeta match elsewhere on this site. Interesting to me that Poeta's style is pretty similar to Winston's. Another observation: you can see Welch adapting to Poeta as the match progresses, he seems to be doing better in the later period, and yes eventually gets a takedown on a spin behind. Pretty impressive, he earned several of his escapes also. He was however one point from being teched. Poeta is in another category. And Kocher and the rest for that matter. Face it it's a whole other level. In D1 state champs are a dime a dozen. Nobody is impressed. It's what you do when you get there. Many a state champ has fallen by the wayside, and many a high school also-ran has risen to be a stud. Know your history and learn the lessons from it.

Reality IS   March 13, 2008 at 3:14pm
im a New York wrestler and from what ive seen from winston he is no where near welch's level so please stop this pointless argument

Winston Getting Screwed   March 13, 2008 at 2:13pm
Welch is a NO show in Fargo and now Senior Nationals and with 7 High School losses is on the Dream Team and Dapper Dan...You don't think Winston can smack some college guys around right now?...Winston is getting screwed!

#46

GOIN BACK 2 CALI   March 12, 2008 at 8:37pm
Dudes- Wake up! While Winston was beating up on high school KIDS, Welch was thumping MEN at the MIDLANDS college tourney as the only high schooler invited. He took down NCAA #1 ranked POETA. R U kidding? He might not pin or tech Winston, but he would major him for sure. NO COMPARISON.

jafo- i pulled that '91 match, cross-kolat, up on youtube. relentless grappling session. impressive to watch. amazing for a junior in high school(?). agreed on the maturity and discipline, mentally and physically it takes to be an undefeated athlete. those are a rare breed of individual. godspeed.

Matt_x   March 12, 2008 at 7:10am
freshman yr he was at his little brothers wrestling tournament before states and he got hurt i think it was a broken arm or something but yea vallimont probably wouldve beat him but he was only a freshman if he matched up against vallimont today it would be close but i still think vallimont would win..still congrats to scott on an undeafeated career

Jafo   March 11, 2008 at 11:46pm
That match happened at the War at the Shore 07. Weight class 162.5. Scholastic style tournament. Results are up on their website http://www.sjwrestling.com. Remember anybody can be beaten on any given day. The level of dedication and maturity required to go undefeated at that young age is what I find to be the most unusual. Kolat did it in PA back in the late 80's I believe, another amazing wrestler. Kolat took it to another level though. He competed in and placed in national level freestyle tournaments in the open division, against NCAA all-americans, NCAA place winners and Olympic hopefuls. While still in high school. Thats unheard of before or since. Still amazed by his match against against Kendall Cross in US Open in 91.

jafo- great comment, insightful view of an extremely fundamentally sound, agressive, relentless wrestler... glad to hear info about last summer's tourny (freestyle? greco?)... decided on the mat, as it should be... absolutely agree.. purest sport.. no excuses.

I would have loved to see how scotty would have done freshmen year at states I think he would have lost to vallimont and gene palko though

Hammer_x   March 11, 2008 at 3:04pm
I agree with 3131 sorry ayjay but scotty is amazing although i would like to see him wrestle thoose guys at 157 though Mike poeta, Dan Vallimont, Gregor Gillespie

#33
3131   March 11, 2008 at 2:20pm
ayjay scotty would not get majored by or pinned by the guys u said he would. look at the speed size and size of him. plus he would never see them bc hes going 157 or 165. stupid thing to say. scotty is one of the best in the nation soon.

Rob Coleman   March 11, 2008 at 1:03pm
In today's college wrestling, it would be virtually impossible to go undefeated. That is what makes Cael's record ridiculous. Very few chumps in college. To wrestle studs match after match is physically and mentally grueling. That is why I don't think Winston has a chance at going undefeated. No way does he beat Poeta, and he has 2 losses this year and more going back. Do I think Winston will have a very good college career, yes. Undefeated? No.

does winston play any other sports besides wrestling?

i dnt think bourne would give winston that much of a fight i saw him this weekend almost lose to james brundage (junior) of ossining in the quarter finals of states, james is only a 3rd yr wrestler.

Jafo   March 11, 2008 at 1:09am
Winston is solid, makes very few mistakes. Has strength and speed, a killer combination and his technique has improved each time I see him wrestle. I did see him get caught last summer, got lat dropped flat to his back and held there for a 5 point move. That tied the score. Winston was able to escape with 15 sec left and won 6-5. That was against Jacque Scott from Delaware. A great match. He's undefeated and he hasn't hidden from anyone. And he wrestles. He's not one of these score a point and stall for 2-1/2 period guys. Looking forward to some great matches in college. Let the predictions fly. It will be decided on the mat, as it should be.

well i think he could beat caldwell but he was supposed to wreslte vallimont in states as a freshman but got hurt and i think at the time vallimont would have won but you never know you cant knock winston for not beating them because we havent seen him loose ever! so well see how he does in college if he looses i dont know how hell take it hopefuly he knows how to recover

Winston shows up everywhere and will wrestle anybody...Welch(who has 7 High School losses) didn't show up at Fargo (Where Winston was the 160lb Champ) and now He's not going to Senior Nationals..Winston got screwed not being a member of either the dream team or Dapper Dan...Him and Welch should have shared it!

You guys are all pretty stupid for arguing who's better. Until they actually wrestle no one will know. And they probabley won't wrestle for a while so just drop it. And stop the stupid people who put Cali or Winston as their name in the comments if your not from cali or jersey. Why are you kids arguing over high school wrestlers come on. They are both great wrestlers. Who cares who will win.
