Chris would win state in PA without question. Chris beat a Pennsylvania state champion when Chris was in the 7th grade...you failed to mention that. For official matches Phillips is 127-0 including junior high of course. Phillips will not lose a match in his High School career barring injury and will go down as the greatest high school wrestler in American history. It's easy to forget he is only a sopre. He will also become a Division 1 National Champion in college......i have a crystal ball yep. Then after that he will represent the USA in the Olympics and win a gold medal.

Just kidding guys Chris will break my legs with one arm tied behind his back, one leg tied behind his b.utt, and on his knees ( i might like that last part ). I don't stand a chance against the #1 rated 171 pounder in America. I'm reconsidering challenging him to a match I might just not wrestle this year to avoid an a.sskicking.

SAW SOMEWHERE PHILLIPS WAS RANKED AT 189 BELOW CAMPOLATTANO. CAMPO IS A REALLY GIFTED ATHLETE BUT SEEMS TO ME LIKE PHILLIPS IS A LEVEL UP. I HAVE A FEELING CAMPO WILL END UP AT 215, SO WHO KNOWS IF THE 2 WILL EVER MEET. BUT I MUST SAY IF CAMPO WINS NJ STATES AGAIN THIS YEAR, HIS CHANCES OF BEING JERZ'S 2ND 4 TIMER AND THE ONLY ONE AT AN UPPER WEIGHT, ARE LOOKING BETTER AND BETTER. A BIT MORE OF AN ACCOMPLISHMENT THAN WINNING 4 IN OHIO DUE TO THE MULTIPLE DIVISIONS. WISH ALL THE STATES THAT HAVE MORE THAN ONE STATE CHAMP IN EACH WEIGHT CLASS WOULD HAVE A TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS .....

Are you kidding? How did this NORwayne kid make the finals?? Phillips had kids in the Owens District that were harder to take down than Smyers. The NORwayne kid must've had a great draw. Remember, Phillips is a freshman and beat the dominant Roddy of St. Ed's 7-3. This finals was a joke.

the truth & snazzy:

hmmmm sounds to me someone is just a bit jealous of Smyers. You have no idea how hard he works or anyone else for that matter. Give the poor kid a break.....I can almost bet it was and still is a hell of alot harder than you. From what I have heard this kids season never stops and he proved that with his record this year. That does not happen unless you work. Why don't you step on the mat with the kid and see how far you get, or are you just a internet lurker that likes to cut down kids on internet forums?

Don't be envious of a successful high school athlete now, hes shattered an ohio high school state record as a freshman ( if u dont know do some research regarding what it is ). The bandwagon is filin up quickly and there is not a seat reserved for you. Only facts have been stated, nothing has been exaggerated you resentful shmuck. Be happy for him you belligerent imbecile and give credit where credit is due.

He will simply dominate in track, he almost broke the high school 400 meter record as an 8th grader.....barring injury Phillips will be a future state champion in the 400 meter. I wonder what other track events he plans to compete in. Their first track meet is April 1st.

Phillips is actually an intelligent kid, he may act strange at tiems but thats his personality, and i can confirm what "chris's friend" wrote, and he is in mostly advanced classes. Btw watch out for phillips to dominate track as well, he runs a 52 sec 400 prolly faster now.

Hey DELTApanther08 I dont think you realize that Yant ran backward and placed 2nd so what are you bragging about? I dont remember seeing you at the finals at all. Where did you place? Oh you didnt...? thats right! I watched all of the finals and Yant showed me NOTHING....and phillips would have kicked his a** thats why he ran backwards into a lower weight class. Smyers earned his way to the top noone gave him a free ride. He worked hard for every bit of what he got this year, county, sectional and district champion, 3 time state qualifier and state runner up.... where did you place again? Yeah, i thought so.. nowhere.

Another To Delta   March 9, 2008 at 5:29pm
Smyers record proved he did not get a charity ride anywhere. Thats why he went into the finals 44-1. Just because Yant beat him at Sandusky don't mean crap. From what I observed when these 2 met, if Smyers had some decent coaches in his corner, the outcome would of been a bit different just like Sophmore year at Sandusky Duals. I guarantee Yant would of got his a** handed to him just as bad by Phillips. Thats why he ran. To little to late for Yant, Smyers wrestled the best in his state final.

That is what the ref is looking at.
He is not taking his cues from Phillips.
He is more concerned about the position of the leg.
And in my opinion, it was a potential danger.

Dangerous   March 6, 2008 at 11:07am
They also did not call a potential danger move on Phillips when he had the kids leg cocked up with his foot on his hip[ either. Shouldnt that of been called? I saw alot of that not only in this match but several others.

If you look close enough and if you were there you would see that the position of the kids right leg was potentially dangerous. There was no complaining to it....it should of been stopped. Try laying on you back sometime with you foot on your hip and your toe pointed out, all the while with someone shoving it as hard as they can. See if you like it. You all think that was such a cool move but if you ask me that was dirty wrestling.

I saw Smyers at Sandusky Duals where he went up against many tough opponents.
It was there where he suffered his first (and only other) loss of the season.
That loss was to Yant, who chose to run from Phillips and fled to a lower weight class in order to not meet up with Chris at state.(a lot of good that did him as he ended up 2nd as well.) This kid Phillips is a great wrestler and those that choose to bad mouth Smyers only take more away from him. Smyers did not run...he faced a though opponent with class.

Hey js and Rocco, the kid in red has a name, It's J.D. Smyers, remember it because he is only getting started... and you WILL get to know him well if you dont already know him and are not admitting that he has already kicked your a** which I am betting he has per your comments. Follow college wrestling and you will see great things come from this kid. He's NOT done yet. Rocco, dont be bragging too much about what you would do to phillips if he got you in a single leg position... truth is, he would probably stuff it in your rear end.

This message is specifically for flofan.
And just WHAT do you know about Smyers.
He never lifts? He does.
Stalls! Hardly. I guess that's how he got to the position to wrestle Phillips in the first place...by stalling.
Lazy. Hardly! He works out beyond the school practice 3-4 or more times per week.
He took first at the Bill Dies Tourney for two years which showcased wrestlers from all over the area.
If you don't want to watch him "strut his stuff" then you better not follow college wrestling.
He'll be there....with class.
UNLIKE YOU.

You have to know Smyers to know that you are totally wrong with your comments.
This kid is one of the hardest workers out there at that sport and he has a tremendous heart.
He did not allow a point or a take down all tourney and did not run from Phillips into a different weight class to avoid him either.

Stop running your trash mouth about him.
He is number ONE and only got beat by the best.
Step up to the mat and see for yourself how good you are if you think YOU can take him.

I'll give credit where credit is due. Graham does have the best team in the nation and Ohio this year. I'm just putting this out but isn't this the first time Jeff Jordan has won vs St.Edwards in 9 years? I believe your comment is to instigate a flame battle and that's not my intention, I'm just stating that both Phillips and Smyers are quality wrestlers and Smyers doesn't deserve to have anything taken away from him for wrestling his heart out against Phillips. Graham will be great if not the best team in the years to come with the sheer amount of talent in the middle school pool. I just want to say St.Eds, Grahams, and Troy Christian congrats on winning the state title and see you guys next year at Ironman.

To all those who are slamming Smyers doubting that he wouldn't even place in NJ is just foolish. Don't take away anything from this kid because he deserve every bit of praise for making it all the way to the finals in Ohio. If you wish to question Ohio wrestling, step it up at Walsh Ironman in 2008. I'm pretty sure that both St.Edwards and St.Paris Grahams will be in the top 5 with a high chance of the falcons winning the toughest high school tournament in the nation. Chris Phillips is simply a joy to watch wrestling and a truly gifted wrestler, best wishes to him on his 4x seek. I've had to pleasure of wrestling in Ohio and PA so I have first hand experience in seeing quality from both powerhouses. I won two Ohio Division 1 titles and had the great pleasure to be an All American for Penn.

You people who are doubting this kid need to actually learn something about this sport. This kid is going to be a 4X State Champion, who wrestles anything, but an easy schedule. He beat Roddy, who I doubt anyone would call a slouch at Ironman, and he won Brecksville. Not to mention the fact that he is wrestling a weight class not typical of a freshman. Unlike the Steiber's, he is not wrestling fellow underclassmen, but men who have hit the weights longer than him. And to those speaking of his "cocky" attitude, I have never seen him disrespect another wrestler and coach, and for the next three years, I do not see anyone emerging as a worthy adversary, so he doesn;t have "false" confidence.

I can bet he has wooped your a** at one time and the accomplishments of this very fine young man should not be understated. If he was lazy he would not be where he is today with county, sectional, and district titles not to mention 3-time state qualifier and state finalist. The only two people who beat him this year were a state champion and a state runner-up that says something for this young man's ability. He is a champion himself and he always has been and you are probably a non-accomplished nobody who has to run other people down to make yourself feel good.

Phillips is incredibly talented and that finals performance was nothing short of amazing regardless of Divison. However, I wouldn't just say he would beat everyone in the country. I personaly know that in PA you have two outstanding wrestlers in Edward Ruth (JR) and Quentin Wright (SR) at 171 who would definitely give him a go and could beat him. The simple fact that I am even saying a top SR & JR from PA can beat him is a true testament to how much of a talent Phillips is though. I am really curious to see him wrestle against someone that will force him to go underneath. The only concern for Phillips and his future development may be being so good on his feet that he doesn't get much practice working on the mat. Hopefully he gets a chance to work out with some good upper-weights that can test him on the mat before he makes his entry into college albeit several years from now.

I would say he his far more impressive than the Palmers,Schlatters,Jordans and Taylor were in their freshman years. Barring any catastrophic injury or social misstep he has got to be the best thats come out of Ohio in many moons...

This kid is the real deal, best in the country. He's only going to get bigger, stronger, quicker, etc. All the Monroeville Eagles kids are a Class Act...in every sport.Congratulations to all the Eagles. He didn't almost pin him with a ankle,he did pin him...the ref missed it.The ref was just as amazed and awed as we were. This is just the beginning...

this ked wrestles like a 103lber. He's fast and keeps up such a strong tempo. This kid is great and ihe keeps it up will be a legend. It would be absolutely ingredible to see him have an undefeated career! Little to early to say that but it's obviously a possibility.
