I just can't believe in todays wrestling you get to sip some water if you have an owie. What has happened to our sport? A little blood, leg slightly bent, I got poked in the eye, and my personal favorite- I'm getting taken down so I'll cry out that my knee is being hyper-extended. Too much refs interpretation in todays game.

Mark is an incredible wrestler because look at his family, hes surrounded by his father and his uncle is John Smith. Hes also got the #1 189lb high school junior wrestler in the country for a brother (Chris Perry). Ya he didnt do well this match, but he is the real deal because of his winning of a national champioship. he will be right back there again this year!

Actually, he hasn't even been wrestling lately. I'm hopeful that he has recovered from knee surgery and is able to wrestle at the Big 10's. And if he is, then we have to wonder what condition he will really be in.

I wfrestled freestyle, greco, div 1 collegiate etc.. Perrys style is an embarrasment in this match pattering around the outisde like a premadonna that thinks hes better than he is.. going for powerducks and extended in bad double leg shots... calling for injury time , and dragging his ass back to center, d-1 champ or not... this is not d-1 all american caliber wrestling, gotta know brands just hates this!!

hawk fan you of all people should know what Hawkeyes go through at practice. you need to show Perry a little more respect than that. Have you ever thought that something else might have been bothering him? It is winter, and people get sick. Perry will hopefully learn from this match and wrestle better. and you need to learn how to spell puke.

Perry is a disgrace to wrestling. When he is not poking someone's eye or choking them or using illegal holds, he gets beat by the real wrestler like Jake Dieffenbach. Iowa wrestling can do better than Perry, Let him crawl back in the hole he came from let clean wrestlers like Dieffenbach take the wins

I'm not an iowa or ok state fan but i do believe Jake wrestled a smart match against perry. As for you iowa fans you can't keep making excuses for him losing. He got distroyed against Chris Brown before being dq'd for acting like an idiot. That doesn't suprise me considering brands is the dirtiest player in the game. Iowa may be coming back up but john smith is a better coach and athlete and he's not just gonna let the compition walk past him. He has a good relationship with all the guys in his room. Ok State won't just fall from the top that easy. They have many years of hangin near the top. And as far as minnesota winning it i'd say there is a few other teams that would have a different opinion on that call. I dunno maybe Penn State? Just a guess though.

i love iowa. what theyve done for wrestling tremendous. but they think college wrestling along with the sun in our solar system is the center of the universe. their only bright spot recently happens to be the nephew of the world greatest wrestler and the program he grew up around. but we are all in this together. and when the tournament starts and you see the pockets of fans with their brightly coloured team colours yelling profaniites at one another you know you are home. wrestling is the greatest sport there is you loons and dont forget it. and also, iowa and osu dont have the best fans. cornell does.

I think we have some serious hawkeye haters on this forum.

Rebuttal to jp: I did try to give Dieffenbach his props. He is a talented kid, but he's no D-1 champ. If you have ever seen Perry wrestle (besides that match) you must admit he did not look himself.

Rebuttal to tt: Have you been to Carver Hawkeye? The fans go nuts! Perry loves being in Iowa and willingly chose it over OkSt. Take some time and listen to his interview post NCAA title match, he tells his story. He not only likes wrestling for Iowa, but identifies himself as wanting to and then becoming the team leader. If he hates Iowa so much, have a look at the back of his left shoulder sometime.

i am a mark perry fan, he looked pretty gassed and tired whatever the case may have been. i like watching perry wrestle, but he did not look like the normal perry, but he did take almost all of the shots to dieffenbach's almost none. jake did everything he had to do to win, almost like perry's win over hendricks in the ncaa finals last year. it was a very boring match, but i felt that jake didnt do anything in the match and the near fall points were very very quick and cheap. we will see what happens in march at the ncaa tournament.

Okay. We have a bon-a-fide stud, defending Div I national champ who finally pulled out a win over Johny Hendricks, whom he had lost many close matches to in the past. He was a beast winning Midlands just a week before. So why look like a pile of dog crap against an unranked, albeit talented Okie State kid? He had to be sick. He had to be! He was not out-of shape a week before (did you watch the Midlands on the Big-10 network? You can't get that far out of condition in one week, even if you sit on the sofa for 7 days straight and do absolutely nothing! He didn't come out to support the team, and he didn't come out to shake hands at the end. Iowa still supports that type of sportsmanship. If he was throwing a fit because he lost I think Brands would have had his butt out there. No, the only thing that makes sense is he had the flu or something, Iowa felt he could still pull off the win even if sick, but it didn't work. Afterwards he was probably hugging the toilet. His conditioning will prove itself next week, and we'll see if he's totally lost it or if he really was sick.

No question the back count was quick, but I seem to remember a pretty quick back count in last year's NCAA final vs Hendricks. You can't have it both ways Hawkeye fans. He just got beat. It happens. Brands has the Hawks on the rise, but the Cowboys and coach Smith aren't just standing still. Brands and Smith are two of the most intense competitors in USA Wrestling history. I predict some great battles and individual upsets in the years to come. It will be fun!

Anyone who feels that it was luck or Perry had a bad day in order for Jake to beat him, obviously has not watched Jake over his career. Jake is one of the top wrestlers at any level in the collegiate arena. I say the best 165lbs has to offer. Jake dropped one match this year that he wasn't ready for mentally, as most wrestlers do from time to time. To say this was the case for Perry is under estimating Jake. He was a three time NAIA National finalist and a Two Time Champion. Look out for Jake Dieffenbach, coming out of a tough program at Lindenwood University, he is wrestling at his level, the TOP!

The nearfall was a fair call. Dieffenback had the takedown at the end of second - he had control and Perry's shoulders were clearly exposed. Too bad for Perry, but it was a clear 2 pt nearfall. Perry then took a "lung timeout" -- embarrassing for a returning NCAA champ (and 2x finalist) and a wrestler as good as he is. After he gets TD in in the third, he forced legs in and basically was looking to hang on, build up riding time, get a tie and force SV overtime. Instead, Dieffenback gets an escape and Perry has no time left. He didn't look like the beast he was at Midlands.

also, Perry's strength is mat wrestling, at in the third period, when he finally got on top, he didn't do anything. it was a one point match at that point, and he just tried to hang on. Conditioning obviously was the issue, maybe nerves to, but I highly doubt a national champ and two time finalist would let the pressure of a lage home crowd get to him. I thought the match was a very good technical strategical match. Just my two cents, I think March will be different.

in response to Diffenbach not doing anything for a period and a half. While stalling has been prevelent in NCAA wrestling as a trend, there is a fine line between Stalling and strategy. I think Diffenbach wrestled a very smart match, executed his gameplan very effectivley, and did what he needed to do to win.

Perry didn't really do anything either. He is a counter wrestler on his feet and didn't set up any of his shots. to a true student of the sport, this was a great match, in a chess game sort of way.

Man, if I could have taken time off when I needed it all those years ago, who knows how good I might have been !! That's one change I don't like about today's wrestling. Blood is treated like a chemical spill. I mean...come on it's a contact sport. This "I'm tired I need an injury timeout" stuff degrades the game.
