This was a terribly called match. Not saying that schalles should have or would have won had the calls been different since a wrestler wrestles different for different situations. But the refs were very INDECISIVE and INCONSISTENT between the both of them. Poorly called and unprofessional on part of the refs. About the near fall, it is up to the ref. But had i been the ref, i would wait till i called reversal THEN started the back count. Show control THEN start the counting. Gray area there.
Ouch... phantom near fall! Also, as physically aggressive as this match was, it seems curious that the ref would turn his back on these guys... especially right after the UC call.
This video sums up the whole tournament. Oveido homered everybody in the tournament from the refs to the brackets. The tournament was run terribly with wrestlers having as much as 6 hours in between matches. The first day they did a "pool" where every wrestler wrestled for a seed in the tournament for the next day. Fine. The problem was that the guys at Oveido decided to "doctor" the brackets to the point that many people wrestled the same guys in the first two rounds of the second day that they did in the pool, thus making the pool pointless. Not only, but that it seemed like the Oveido wrestlers always had a pretty nice draw... but the South Dade guys had to really fight in order to make it out of the first two rounds (which were single elimination btw). Very sad because this tournament had great potential and competition but the lack of integrity of the Oveido staff really hurt this experience.
Great match! 2pts for a reversal-okay, but, 2pts for a nearfall was a very poor call. Also, another poor call was for the ref to be in a photo with Oveido.
If it had been called locked hands on the Charlotte kid then the match should have been stopped for a technicial violation. If Schalles was called for unsportsmanlike, which he should have been, then the match should have been stopped. Either way, the reversal and back points, should have never counted as it happened in bad time. Also, even though it never should have counted, after control was established only one second (one-thousand one) occured while in near fall criteria. There is no such thing as a "Quick 2 seconds." Either it is or it is not, and it was not. Also, it should have been unnecessary roughness and not unsportsmanlike on the hard push to the mat. It still was a point, but it should have been called differently.
what about the two points matthews earned at about the 4:35 mark.total takedown with schalls on his side..matthews even hooked schalles right ankle to seal the takedown
The first time he does it the time is at the 5:27 mark, just about 30 seconds into the 2nd period and you can see he is trying to show the ref the Charlotte kid has his hands still locked and no call is made. The next time is where all the action is, its starts at 11:41 is the first touch then the 2nd is 11:43 thats when the assistant throws up the locked hands followed by the flurry on the edge of the mat.
Matside agree fully with you. That technically would have been the 3rd unsportsmanlike against the Oviedo wrestler. The one in the first for pushing when they were out. The missed one in the 2nd where he tried to bait a locked hands call then again in the third. Your right the judgement of the assistant is all that mattered. There is just alot of talk that the referee was in Oviedo's corner and I wanted to point out the assistant saw it and made the call and thats all the ref has to go on. The back points were very quick and even if the Charlotte wrestler did lock hands all the Oviedo wrestler should have gotten was maybe a reversal, it was close, escape for sure but no backs it was a quick roll through, not 2 seconds there.
Central Florida I agree with your interpation of the wrong call he clearly put the hand down to draw the locked hands call, numerous times throughout the match. However it was the asst. refs JUDGEMENT that the other ref went on and we all know that is not something we are allowed to question.Take away that point or better yet give one to Matthews we have a 5-6 match or two points for the third penalty againest JS. Those back points really come into play there, the ref was in the absolute best position to make that quick two count and Schalles may still wins or we have a overtime.
Matside I think your right and when the locked hands is called its thrown up by the assistant ref, you can see the referee is kinda behind them coming around, I don't think he saw it. The assistant clearly saw it though but called locked hands instead of unsportsmanlike conduct. I don't think the official was in Oviedo's corner, he relied on his assistant for the call and it was the wrong call.
Schalles without a doubt put his hand down on the mat to get the locked hands call not only late in the third when he got the call but also earlier when he didn't get the call intentional I think so. A refersal to the near fall position a QUICK 2 count makes 4. I don't believe that ref or any others are in Oviedo's command. If you look at the entire match he stayed in position the whole time. The line calls, ect. Though lose for Mathews but correct.
What was the Assistant Ref thinking? He called the locked hands when it was clear the Oviedo wrestler not once but twice at the end put his hands on the mat to try to get the ref to call locked hands, as "theman" said he did it earlier in the match as well.
Well the reversal should have never happened let alone back points, there was never locking hands on the Charlott wrestler, the Oviedo wrestler intentionally puts his hands on the mat trying to get a locked hands call, that my friends is unsportmanlike conduct, this also happened early in the match and wasn't called.
