You're right, Jersey has a lot of 1 and 2 point matches. I know Winston took him to his back at the end, so it was tied late into the 3rd period. But a 6-1 match can be a beatdown, it all depends.

Anonymous Coward   December 31, 2008 at 4:58pm
You jersey mouths are saying the same thing. Stuttering all over the place. Yes, Welch lost. Now why not post something original. Or do you jersey boys just parrot each other. By the way, a 6-1 loss is not exactly getting messed up. A loss, yes but not messed up. Maybe in jersey, but not the rest of the world.

All of you idiots that talk down a 17 year old high school senior that just beat by the top 157lb.rated wrestler by the NCAA.Who by the way is 5 years older than Jason.Welch isa class act.Big upside. All of you haters.
The Idiot that typed his name as Bland would that be the 191 lb.state
champion that welch beat in a match at 175lbs.How about Danz the 191 lb.
state champ that welch also beat. All you haters.Pay attention,Jason
Welch did not red-shirt,hes the real deal and don't be surprised when he wins two or three NCAA titles.Hes already beat that Donkey Winton all of you idiots from East of the Mississippi.

Maybe because he is only in high school once he gets into that northwestern room he will be twice as good as he was in hs if you honestly think he has peaked you are obviously ignorant to the sport of wrestling.

its amazing the difference in ability between a top ranked high schooler and a top ranked collegiate wrestler. Poeta is a beast and welch will be a phenomenal wrestler in college........but he won't beat poeta

I think Cary Kolat had a pretty close match with Kendall Cross as a high school junior when Cross was an NCAA champ and I remember Dustin Schlatter defeating multiple NCAA AA's while in high school.

I don't think people on here understand the "jump of differences" in competition from high school to college. I remember when I started wrestling in college I couldn't believe the level change. For a high school kid to even wrestle at this level is amazing, let alone take down the number one guy in the country.

true dat. welch would stomp on winston. welch is still hanging in there with the top college guy in the country but still a long way away from beating guys like poeta. i think that its always smart to redshirt as freshman as i think welch should too

Welch hasn't peaked yet. In fact, there is no such thing as peaking because you can always improve and get stronger and faster and better at the little things. At least untill you get older and your body cant take it anymore. But Welch is only in high school so he's got about 12 years untill he's 30 and then things will start to slow down.

no shame for welch in taking this match on, a good experience. a lot of d1 recruits coming out of high school won't get the chance to get their butt kicked by a top level college guy and see where they need to be in the future. this should do nothing but help him. i wonder how long it's been for welch since he's been handled like this, if ever?
