Mark Bader and Joeflo dive into the topic of the National Duals and the proposal that they will decide the NCAA Championships.
no! the ncaa tournament is fine the way it is. in fact its great the way it is. national duals would be stupid and pointless
no data supporting the idea that this format will somehow help lower tier programs. not a well thought through plan.
I've listened and read all the arguments against, and they just don't add up. If you believe wrestling is an exciting sport to watch on TV, you HAVE to believe that two NCAA-sponsored tournaments on ESPN is better than one. Right? Who wouldn't want to have both? No way this diminishes the individual tournament. Wrestling needs to expand on ALL fronts, not protect the turf it already controls.Overall, I believe this will help with recruiting and with funding for programs. Let's say you're a program that has only 4 scholarships instead of 9.9. How do you argue for more under the current system? I believe it is far more likely that an American or a Clarion or a Maryland or a Boise State could win a National title under the proposed system than it is that they could win a National title in our current system. That's obvious. After all, how many schools HAVE won in recent years? It's a ridiculously small group--small enough for the NCAA to believe it's not even a true competition. But if I'm an AD at a school that surprised people and got to the semis of a National tournament contested in a dual meet format, hey, I'm going all in. Why not? One or two more scholarship athletes at key weights might just win my school a National title. Ain't happening under the current rules. From what I've heard and seen, Dan Gable is for it. John Smith is for it. I have to believe that J Robinson is for it. These are guys with proven track records of wanting to grow wrestling, rather than just their own individual programs. Why would they support this if they thought it was a bad idea for wrestling? They wouldn't.And Flo: for God's sake stop complaining about how little you know about all this. You guys are supposed to be REPORTING the story, not reading about it. Get out there and get us the goods rather than going on and on about all the unanswered questions. That's why we come to you in the first place--for answers. Bader's interview with Brian Smith is a great start. Now go further.
Just curious if ESPN actually said they would be on board with showing 2 different wrestling championships? Is this just something everyone is assuming or is this actually been accounted for? It would be very easy for ESPN to say “We only show one National Championship for wrestling”
I like the dual format more because when youre at NCAA's, you can AA two wrestlers and place top 20 in the country like appalachian st did last year. Were they the 20th best college program in america last year? HELL NO. I see it not taking away from the individual tournament at all because all of those kids are still competing for themselves at the highest level. It does not lose its luster at all. Look at last year, Penn State ran away with the team title and no one was saying its a down year for it. It was incredible last year. The storylines of David Taylor getting his redemption, Dake getting his third,. Steiber stunning Oliver, and McD getting his second title were all fantastic. Even the small schools like app state got their exposure because of the two AA's but that does not mean they should be the 20th best team in the country. Rutgers would have easily beaten them last year without getting ONE AA. and only putting one guy in the round of 12.
this is not a good idea for wrestling. it takes a way from the tournament big time fans can not afford both tournaments the way the economy is right now so I'm not for the dual meet national championship at all. Keep things the way they are I believe our sport is on the rise and will only get better! NAY to NCAA tournament dual championship !

Don't change what is already great for the true fans. Adding the team dual tourney is cool but not calling that winner the national team champs and taking it away from the real tournament. Every team with a national championship already will now be remembered by winning the old tournament. Don't suck the team aspect out of the final tourney. I love seeing the guys fight in the wrestlebacks to earn important team points even if they don't make aa. Seems like a few have an agenda to make the dual tourney successful. They should not be allowed to sacrifice the greatest tournament in sports to try to get their new idea up and running.
make it a 2 day event.make weight once.who cares about injury or fresh legs, scrap it outmore people will come if its not so spread outalso, have it before Xmas
I see one real positive here in that it is more of a team championship, but I see several serious drawbacks so unless the added information that may or may not come out I have to vote no.Sanderson is staunchly against it as well so you know, there is that
