Minga Batsukh wrestled at St. John's University in Collegeville, MN. He was a 4 time National Qualifier and a 3 time National Champion. This past season, he was voted as the NCAA Championships Outstanding Wrestler and the D3 Wrestler of the Year.

At the North Country Open at St. John's, he put together an unbelievable performance. He ended the day with 50 takedowns in 5 matches. This total included an SJU record of 17 takedowns in one match!

This is a compilation of his season.

"The main difference between D1 and D3, I think, is the mentality it takes to compete at that level everyday."

Not true. The biggest difference is the level of the athlete. Your average D1 (.500) Wrestler would be one of the best in the nation at D3. There are a very few exceptions... but the simple fact is that the better All American D1 athletes are world class or pro caliber. You can work as hard as you want to... but some people have a gift. Not everyone can compete at that level. Not everyone can be play pro.
Take a look at Ryan Malo this year Wrestling at Virginia. He is at about .500 during a post Senior year red shirt. His 5th year in College with all the coaching and level of intensity and ability in the room. Still at .about .500 in D1. It is the level of athletic ability in D1 that tips the balance. In D3 Ryan was a 3X All American, Second in the Nation twice... he hardly ever lost a match. The few times he did lose while in D3 he was in open tournaments against D1 opponents or later rounds in the nationals (2nd twice).
It is impossible to say for sure how this Wrestler would do in D1, but the odds are he would not do great... has he wreslted at midlands or some of the tougher opens?

Ok, the kid looked good in his matches. He is a 3x ncaa champion so he obviously is doing something right, but I've got to say the competition he was facing in these clips look like average high school wrestlers. I like his technique and he does do some flashy things but I would really like to see how he would hang with the big boys in DI. Again, he looks tough, I just wasn't impressed with the video as much as everyone else.

great...

The Nick Garone video also includes a lot of freestyle matches so it will look a lot different. I do agree that Division 1 wrestling is different than Division 3 but not as much as it seems you're saying. But I think that freestyle and international competitions make the big difference.
The main difference between D1 and D3, I think, is the mentality it takes to compete at that level everyday. You need a go get it attitude nearly every day of the year since a lot of those guys compete over the summer at freestyle/greco opens and international competitions.
The top guys in D3 would do well in D1 and I think the majority of AA's in D3 and D2 would be decent to above average wrestlers in D1. It just depends on the time they want to put in.
Now that Minga is out of college, look for him to be doing more freestyle wrestling. Keep a good eye out for him because he will make things happen.

It's hard to not put only Minga's takedowns on a highlight video. In one tournament the kid had 50 takedowns in 5 matches. The kid is a freak on his feet and he has a lot of weapons as shown by the video.

Minga does wrestle very well on top. His riding style is just not as flashy and fun to watch as his takedowns. A couple clips on the highlight video are him returning guys to the mat to their backs.
He would ride a claw ride a lot and when guys stood up on him he would get big returns and score a lot of points.
