Jake Shields and Ben Askren got together to do some training for their upcoming fights. They both have grappling styles which call for a lot of scrambling and creativity which made for an entertaining training session. Shields is training for his highly anticipated UFC debut against Martin Kampmann on October 23 at UFC 121 and Askren for his Bellator title bout against Lyman Good on October 21.

Shields is right, Ben's a future champ for sure! He makes transitions look effortless. The boo-birds at MMA fights just don't understand that this is really where it is at in the fight game. Heavy hands are great as long as you are on your feet to land them, but it WILL go to the ground sooner or later, and this is where Ben will overwhelm anyone he faces...

This video is fixed to make Shields look good. Look at 6:37 where Askren has the RNC with hooks in and they cut out. However, everytime Ben taps, they show it.

Jake looks in total control on the mat, Ben not so much. I noticed Jake is always looking for the choke or submission while Ben focuses to much on scrambling and not enough on choking, submissions or protecting himself from chokes and submissions. Ben has a long, long, long way to go before he is at Jake Shields level.

Shields is a boring fighter but he beat legend Dan Henderson by outwrestling the olympian, give him some credit. Ben is doin fine, gonna take a while to master mma ground game vs wrestling on the mat.

Shields is tough as nails. He gives Ben a great deal of respect at the end, but seemed to be able to find submissions in a scramble that would normally favor Ben. The figure four on the body was brutal.

If you knew anything about jiu-jitsu or submission grappling you'd know that Ben isn't hanging with Shields. He's getting worked. Takedowns are one thing, once you're on the ground you're in the world of jiu-jitsu. I saw Askren tap several times and I didn't see Jake tap once. Jake worked him on the ground. Askren won the takedown game.

Not really. Askren's wrestling career ended, what, 2-3 years ago? And he's already hanging with jake shields grappling... being a wrestling champion definitely cuts the work you have to put in immensely.

Some of the best scrambling, in any training camps, anywhere.

the few times I have seen ben fight I have not been impressed. What is Bellator and how can he be fighting for the champinship??? Must be noone good in it. He would definitley get killed in UFC or strikeforce right now. Maybe things will change but he sure didn't look like he had any killer instinct in his previous fights.

i wish i could buy stock or 3 yr options in askren on the NYSE

i'd bet the house!

Askren is amazing but it does show that even champion wrestlers require years to develop the techniques, skills and instincts specific to other martial arts such as jujutsu. No way around it, gotta put in your time.

Haters- Are you kidding me, take a look at Jakes creds and you will see that the guy you called a "turd" is ranked 9th in the world overall (any weight class) in MMA and has won some serious tournaments. Clearly in this area Jake has more cred then Ben, so take it as a compliment.

hmmm 2 years ago

gsp would literally murder askren....like csi murder. cant hang wit gsp koscheck, sanchez, etc

As I recall askren is focussing on MMA/ Bellator. He coaches and stuff, but i believe after he lost to one of twins from iowa state during the world team trials and decided to put his focus on fighting.

If askren wants to wrestle he should focus on wrestling. If askren wants to do MMA he should focus on mma. But as long as hes splitting his time up he wont be the best at either.

dang 2 years ago

jake was gettin that hippie on the ground scrambles ha. but askrens not bad and was dominating on his feet... both of em are beasts

That was awesome

That was great. Shields is a slick dude. Can't wait to see him face GSP. Better yet, can't wait to see Askren give GSP a little taste of his own medicine.
