What are your thoughts? I think it is good that South America will be hosting their first games.

Kind of surprising, Rio is a major HOLE once you get about a 1/2 a mile from the coast. It will be interesting, it will be good for South America. It'll be interesting to see what the do with all of the barrio slums, and how they incorporate an actual sewer/ garbage system

OK. Sorry. I didn't mean any disrespect to Chicago. Perhaps I spoke a without knowing completely what I was talking about. I have been there too and quite enjoyed it.

I just wanted to point out that it used to be a very crucial part of the world in terms of manufacturing and transportation and I am not sure that it retains that status. My understanding is that it certainly was a center of refined art and architecture from the 1850s until sometime around World War I.

In looking at the future of wrestling in our hemisphere, I can't help but think of the following new announcement:

_________________________
http://www.wrestling411.tv/?p=2673
says the following:
We are going to be taking the next 60 days off programming to fund raise and explore financial backing for the program....Without the commitment and financial support of the wrestling community projects like this cannot and will not survive. Wrestling as a result will continue to remain where it is. We hope that you well get involved, help us meet this goal, and keep this great project going forward. We cannot do it by ourselves.

Does this mean that FloWrestling is about to go under too? Or just that Wrestling411 is?

Speaking from only my selfish side, I think it stinks. My sister lives in Chicago, I could of had a free place to stay, if it would have been in Chi-town.

If you want to see how messed up Brazil is watch the documentary "Manda Bala." Crime has made its way into every stratum of Brazilian society, from top to bottom. Bad choice. Why do they keep having the Olympics in places with such terrible air quality?

Alan, when the hell was the last time you were in Chicago? If you tell me you live there then you are a nut. Chicago is a great city. We love doing business there.

Burke, you have big mouth and make some pretty big statements without having a clue as to where I come from. Rio and that entire country you seem to call a second homeland is a hellhole. The first night I was in Rio I heard what I thought were firecrackers going off. I was later told what was really going on. They (the police) shoot street children at night in efforts to keep their glue huffing numbers in check.

There is poverty in that country that makes our government cheese eating masses look like Bill Gates. There are Gun fights between rival gangs that spread bullets over major highways. How about 2,069 murders last year in Rio alone. One in five murders in Rio is committed by police. If that happened in Chicago there would be unbelievable unrest. Hell, one killing of mentally deranged lunatic caused outrage as was already stated by a previous poster. How about the “flash kidnappings” where people are stopped on their way out of the airport, robbed of their cash and cell phones and taken to ATM’s and cleaned out at gunpoint. The entire city is literally surrounded by suburbs of shanty towns that team with gangs like roaches.
You are losing your only legitimate president soon (due to term limitations) and even he is misguided enough to believe that Brazil is “now a first class country” because they got the Olympics. Bottom line is the mass that is going there doesn't speak Portuguese, they stand out (blue eyed blonde haired Germans are really going to blend) and a lot of people are going to be appalled and affected by the poverty, crime and police corruption.
The country is an impoverished, corrupt dump. I am not a fool; I knew where I was, right in front of one of the most exclusive hotels in Rio... Hotel Caesar Park Ipanemayou. I was not loud, I was not drunk, I was on my way to a meeting. I am not an ignorant American. I have travelled and worked all around the world so I have seen my fair share of how others live.
IOC put the Olympics on one the most unstable continents on the planet. You cannot correct centuries old racism, social inequity, and corruption by sending the Olympics somewhere. Brazil has been a country on the rise for 40 years now. Always on the rise but never able to turn the corner.
Maybe Burke can make some money by acting as a guide through this fictional wonderland he has created in his head. For those who still want to go, when the time comes you can drop me a line and I can refer you to the security company I use.

Iowa hater - you are an example of the type of ignorant American the world would rather just goes away or better yet doesn't make the trip t Rio and kills the buzz. I have taken my very young family to Brazil three times (my wife is from Belo Horizante) and we have traveled to Rio evry time. If you are a fool and loud (which might be your problem) you can attract unwamted attention. If, however, you learn some Portuguese, figure out where you are going before you get out on the street and enjoy exploring new places and meeting new people without being a sucker to every kid who approaches you... you will love Brazil and Rio.

My wife and I are moving there for a year when my oldest son is in 6th grade and we can't wait. The Olympics will have a huge beneficial impact on the city and the government, not just in the creation of jobs, but also because of the infrastructure improvemnts and the city's (country's) international exposure. I would encourage anyone to visit Brazil (learn some Portuguese though - don't act like an ugly American, ie. Iowa Hater) and you will discover not just that yes the women are unbelievably hot and down to earth, but that the people in general are very friendly and the scenery is amazing!

As one who loves the Olympics it is great to see the Olympics go somewhere fresh and dynamic. As an American it is depressing because the awarding of the Olympics to Rio is a symptom and a harbinger of the future of the diminishing influence of the United States and the emergence of South America in general and Brazil in particular. Brazil has developed into a country with a promising future while the United States is a great power that is at the end of the line. Chicago is a hollow shell of what it once was due to the removal of all the great transportation and industrial capacity of 100 or even 50 years ago. As such Chicago is a metaphor for what has happened to the United States. The wealth and vitality of our formerly great country has been ripped out and stolen and will not be coming back any time soon.

The olympics are a huge waste for the hosting country. The locals get left saddled with debt for a bunch of useless one time construction projects. Better off for 99% of the people of that area NOT to host the games.

I think this is going to be great for South America. The improvements in infrastructure and the overall quality of life that will take place will transform Rio forever. Chicago was probably the worst state in the Union to put in a bid for the summer Olympics. A Florida or California city would have had a much better shot, who the hell wants to go anywhere near Chicago?

Thinking About Dangerous....   October 2 at 2:24pm
Yes, It may have been a feather in our caps to have 2016 Olympics in Chicago, but I've been thinking about the dangerousness of Chicago also....Just a few weeks ago, during lunchtime on a workday in the downtown area, it took 5 or 6 Chicago policemen to take down a bothersome panhandler. NOT by a taser....no by shooting him to death right in front of a gathering lunchtime crowd. So, you know that the world saw that and no wonder the rest of the world did not want to have the Olympics here. I am a Chicago native and I love my city and have a healthy respect for Chicago's men in blue....BUT something must be done about allowing disruptive (many times mentally ill) people to be protected from themselves without killing them.

Let's hope Chicago can work to give the world a better impression for 2020!!! Hopefully Oprah will still be backing the cause.
Thanks for the forum.

I'm glad it is not in the U.S. Again. To me it is starting to become irritating how we think we own the world. I'm proud to be an American, but we don't own the world. Having the olympics here in the U.S. won't help out the debt that our country is in thus far. It won't even come close. God bless America!

My thoughts...well Joe, I am a little dissapointed. They picked a third world hell hole to hold the olympics. Rio is a incredibly dangerous city. I travel there for business and must bring security with me. I was once robbed at knifepoint in front of the most elite hotel in rio. Stupid, really stupid. You are gonna have a bunch of young and dumb people going down there dreaming of parties, beaches and babes in bikini's. They are going to wake up with a lump on their head, bleeding and laying in some alley with their money gone.

Dumb choice. Really dumb. The united states basically bankrolls the olympics. If we want it then we should get it. IOC made a y, dumb decision here and they are gonna pay out the backside for it. The olympics after this one they are going to be on their knees, begging the United States to host in 2020.

I think it's going to be a great site for the summer olympics. There's a lot of pride and community when it comes to sports events down there, so no doubt it will be a huge event. As an American I am disappointed Chicago didn't get it, but maybe it is for the best in terms of finances... Sure it would have generated a large amount of funds, but do we really have the means as a country to support an event of this caliber at the moment? Hoping to see the games on American soil soon though.

I was a little dissapointed that it was not in the US. The thought actually came to my mind that if it were in Chicago I would consider attempting to go but thats not going to happen now. Would like to go to Brazil but thats not going to happen either. I hope that the Brazilian government is able to pull it off though or there won't be another Olympics in a latin american country for another 40+ years (Mexico last to host from LA in ~1968).

I am disappointed that it wasn't Chicago. I was just talking the other day that we would have to go if the Olympics were in Chicago...so close to home. But, it doesn't really matter. The Olympics are exciting, no matter where they are. Personally, it would have been easier to travel to Chicago, though.
