Wondering everyones opinion about this. MMA uses board shorts and in grappling tournaments everywhere board shorts are used. Do you think this could increase participation at the youth and high school level?

What concerns me now is the number of kids at the last two youth tournaments in Cincinnati who are allowed to wear a t-shirt and shorts vs. a singlet. Somebody is going to end up with a broken finger due to getting caught up in the loose fitting t-shirt. If the kids won't wear a singlet, and the parents won't shell out $8 for an Under Armor knock off at WalMart, I say put the kids out there in a pair of well fitting shorts (not sagging) and make them go shirtless. I cannot imagine that a singlet would be more embarrasing than not wearing a shirt but who knows.......

im sure sagging would be something the rules could take care of, i mean the singlet is so there is no gear in the way, so if we made a switch to board shorts they would prolly have to actually fit the kid. anyone that uses the singlet excuse is really just saying they are not mentally or physically strong enough to wrestle.. Its not like people just walk off the mat after a match and dont put shorts and t on and walk around all day in their singlet.. its 6 minutes.. i say leave the singlet...

I went into highschool wrestling with a BJJ/MMA background, so i have always used boardshorts and rashguards. Now that im wrestling, I wear boardshorts and a rashguard for practice, plus all the extra sweatshirts and sweatpants, but of course the good old singlet for tournaments. Since i have used both i think the singlet is good for wrestling and it serves its purpose, i wouldnt wear a singlet in a BJJ tournament but i would wear boardshorts for a wrestling tournament if given the option. I think if they added in boardshorts it could increase popularity, but i would leave it up to the individual wrestler to decide on what to wear.

You know, I think it actually can. I used to hear all the time from kids who didnt wrestle but know of the sport, how one of the reasons they did not want to wrestle was because of the spandex like uniforms. Really immature, I know. The board shorts could very much increase the participation. But something ive always hated in the wrestling room was sagging. I could just see those kids that think they need to sag wrestling shorts to be cool.
