Our US freestyle team this year is composed of 7 wrestlers new to a world or Olympic championship. What are the benefits, what are the disadvantages? Is this our ideal team?

Benefits: Young team that can make the most of having plenty of time to gain tons of experience before 2012.
Disadvantages: I don't see any at this point. It is really about committment and being coachable. There are some guys on the team that can have a real positive impact on the others from a leadership perspective.
The question that will have to wait to be answered is 'how many of these 21 will represent us on the Olympic team in 2012. If the number is low (subjective, I know), will we look back and say the youth of the team was a disadvantage.

"2008 Olympic champion Henry Cejudo is not expected to compete this season.
With the 22-year-old Cejudo taking a year off, that has opened the door for a number of wrestlers in the lightest weight class in freestyle."
Saw Cejudo on Ninja Warrior last weekend during the NW marathon on Fuse. He did not do too well

When was the last time that no one on the world team was from Iowa or Oklahoma State? Has it ever happened before?

it seems Comier has lost his drive since the Olympics him and Ben Askren must have caught the same thing?
Cormier will be making a comeback next season at heavyweight. He is taking a yeah off and is still working out in Stillwater.

I think it is great to have guys getting experience early in an olympic cycle. Most of these guys will be going for the 2012 olympics. People like Bunch, Schlatter, Paulson, Varner are all very young and this experience will be huge moving forward.

When is the LEGENDARY Bob Mizerek going to be given his own program on Flo?
When my creepy coach @ Rutgers-Newark shows his face &/or gets in touch w/me. Starting the middle of next week, I'll be booked till mid-August. After that, I'll do the interview above ground or six feet under. Either way, he'll be FLOWED!!

Major benifit is it gets them the experiance they need early instead of starting this same type of experiance training the year before the Olympics start. I'm sure not all of them will make the Olympcis team but it will make the competition for the Olympic Trials better having more people with international experiance wrestling each other.

what specifically happened over there?
U.S. freestyle wrestler Daniel Cormier withdraws from 96 kg Olympic competition to be held on Thursday
U.S. Olympic Committee
08/21/2008

U.S. Olympic freestyle wrestler Daniel Cormier (Stillwater, Okla.) has withdrawn from the Olympic Games competition at 96 kg (211.5 lbs.), which is scheduled for Thursday, August 21.

Cormier weighed in for the competition on Wednesday, August 20 at 3:15 p.m. and received his draw for the competition.
Cormier became dehydrated and received treatment from U.S. Olympic Committee medical staff at the Poly Clinic in the Athlete Village and at a local hospital. He has since rehydrated and is expected to have a complete recovery.
Out of extreme caution for his health, after consultation with Cormier, his coaches and the medical staff, it was decided that Cormier would not compete on Thursday. According to international rules, there can be no replacement after weigh in is held, so there will be no U.S. entry at the weight class.

I like our team and I think it bodes well for the future, but let's not kid ourselves. Not only are these not the best wrestlers in the world at these weights, they are not even the best AMERICAN wrestlers. Our ideal world team would include Cejudo and Cael and other world or Olympic medalists who for various reasons don't wrestle anymore. But given the fact that we're never going to have an "ideal" team, I'm all for youth and passion in the runup to 2012.

The United States is finally on the right track providing there wrestlers with funds that can support there athletes needs. This will provide motivation for our athletes to stay with international wrestling instead of seeking job opportunities. Mike Novo is a big part of this. I believe this is a huge factor in keeping our athletes competing for multiple Olympics.....which is where the Russians are right now. They have athletes who stay in the game longer...and thats what we need.
