Shawn Charles Named New Head Coach At Arizona State
#25 | This is a great choice for ASU he is great at organizing and will do well setting up his own program Mizzou has been dealt a big loss there aren't alot of good assistants floating around Maybe Matt Pell but he is at Virginia now If Askren had his head in the right spot he is an outside possibility |
#24 | Telling it Like it Is said: Studio Art? Well, Cael is an artist. Just another dream he managed to check off the check list. http://www.caelsanderson.com/photo-galleries/?album=9MOST IMPRESSIVELY, he majored in computer information systems.... Compare that to Cael, who majored in studio art :-( |
#23 | Definitely a huge loss for MIZZOU. But I think most of us saw this coming the second the ASU job became available. Askren said before his MMA fight that he was happy being a volunteer asst because he gets his money from elsewhere. He's pretty committed to the MMA thing right now so I don't see him being the choice, but I guess you never know. Not sure I can think of anyone that really sticks out right now. Any ideas from anyone? |
#22 | This is a very good hire... this guy has been a very good asst. and head coach at every place he's been, not mention SC was a badazz at ASU... MU needs to steal a good asst. away from another school, this was a pretty big loss in my estimation.. |
#21 | Shawn Charles is a Big Loss for Mizzu Tiger and I hope they can fill the spot |
#20 | Socially inept, Oh, how you have ruined this moment for me. This is the best decision that has been made in D1 wrestling in recent memory. The decision to hire Shawn indicates that ASU's athletic department actually wants this wrestling program to succeed. Yet you, socailly inept, have insisted upon discussing his awsomeness or have mistook his name for a dance my grandmother did. Here is a four-time all-American who can connect with student athletes and develop them as Douglas once did. Can we be funtionally literate as a wrestling community long enough to appreciate the moment? Make it happen, Shawn. |
#19 | I think it's absurdly awesome that a Hs Coach in my league in which I also coach coordinated Mr. Charles as a guest at an upcoming camp. I get to learn more from the now ASU HC. Slick! Way to go MC Coach. Congrats too Shawn. Next step for the Pac 10? Replace the recently dropped Portland St program with either U of Oregon or Fresno St. |
#18 | Shawn Charles is awesome and he's gonna do a great job. It sucks that he's leaving Missouri, but he deserves this. Best of luck to him. |
#17 | isn't it charles not charleston red dog? |
#16 | I think Shawn Charleston is a great choice and has been a personal friend of mine for many years. I wish newly hired Coach Charleston all the best, bring back the Sun Devil Pride that we have all been missing these past many years! |
#15 | I've read up on Coach Charles' bio just now: http://www.mutigers.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/charles_shawn00.html http://www.gobulldogs.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/charles_shawn00.html He's a Tucson, AZ. native, who was ASU's first 4 time All-American wrestler. MOST IMPRESSIVELY, he majored in computer information systems.... Compare that to Cael, who majored in studio art :-( The Fresno State decline might not be attributable to Coach Charles, but it might be as well. There's a question mark there, and it's highly relevant given ASU's fragile status. How about ASU's hopes of becoming a serious Olympics training center? What's the situation with Coach Charles and the Olympics? His involvement wasn't stellar. But then again the 1996 for Terry Brands wasn't either. However, Brands finally medaled in them, but wasn't offered the ASU job. Same goes for Zeke Jones. I'm ambivalent about this hire. I wish Coach Charles well, but I'm also keeping my eyes wide open out of concern for the ASU wrestling program, which is in jeopardy. |
#14 | Zeke's latest college team? What ties to ASU? Hey, Telling It, what rock have you been hiding under? |
#13 | Didn't his program go under out in California? What ties does he have to ASU? How'd he do at the Olympics? Zeke Jones' latest college team is alive and well, and he's an ASU alum. who won Olympic silver. But Zeke might be challenged in the "pigmentation" category... Why is this not a reverse discriminatory outrage? |

#11 | That's what I'm talkin about!!! He is the perfect choice. That program will be back in no time! Let's get the West Coast back on the map! |
#10 | Charles is a great choice, he has done a fine job at all of his previous assistant positions. This man is AZ proud and will prove it in his efforts to return the program to national contention. I love all of the coaching changes, the pot has finally been stirred. |
#9 | Thank you Ortiz! Gongratulations ASU on a great choice for our new head coach! There is no better fit for ASU than Shawn Charles. Heres why- From AZ, he is hungry to prove he belongs as a D1 Head coach, he has a chip on his shoulder, he has only one chance, the campus at ASU sells itself to new recruits, he will have full support of AZ coaches and our wrestlers throuhout the state of Arizona. You nay sayers from around the country who have your high profile coaches will see what a "blue collar" coach looks like when he is cornered. Out work them all Coach Charles- Let's take the west coast back first and then the nation. |
#8 | The program is really showing a will to live since their near beheading. Shawn Charles is a wrestling passionate person and an alumnus who cares about the program. He is the right man for the job. There is a lot of talent in that room. It should be interesting to see what he can do. There sure are a lot of coaching moves going on. Anyone hear anything about any others? |
#7 | about a week late on this one... |
#6 | Not a good choice...one season off from getting axed. Nothing aganist Charles but should have gotton someone who had some "glitz" but I do not think there is not alot to choose from. |
![]() #5 | Official release from Arizona State isn't coming until 10:30 a.m. PDT on Friday morning. |
#4 | Ben should only be offered that position if he makes a full commitment to the sport of wrestling. I am a huge Askren fan but after he came up short at the Olympics it seems like he just gave up on the sport. I don't understand how he believed he could just take a few years (after graduating) of freestyle competition and become an Olympic Champion. I would really like him to take a job in or around Colorado and make a serious run at world and Olympic titles. The ASU assistant job would be a perfect spot, I just wish someone close to Ben would push him towards this. |
#3 | shawn charles is a first class guy and has a huge interest in pac 10 wrestling having attended Arizona State he will do well.I think Ben Askren should be offered his assistants job at Mizzou Ben has done so much for the program he put them on the map. |
#2 | race bannon found it out a long time ago |
