apparently, from what coach jackson said at iowa state, taylor is thinking of staying home and has asked to speak to ohio state. what a huge pick up for ohio state if he decides to go there.
In regarding stuff on the National Letter of Intent, a FAQ was as follows: If I do not satisfy my National Letter of Intent agreement, may I practice or receive athletics aid at another National Letter of Intent institution?
The answer: Yes. The National Letter of Intent basic penalty is the loss of one season of competition in all sports and a required one year in residence at the next National Letter of Intent institution. It does not include a prohibition against receiving athletics financial aid or practicing with a team.
So unless I am reading this wrong, Taylor could practice with the team and get scholarship money. He just would not be eligible to compete. Am I reading this wrong?
I'm plenty chill. I just don't understand why people talk in absolutes if they have no clue.
Back to the topic. He doesn't have to attend one day of ISU, he can just transfer to PSU w/ or w/o a release. Money then plays a role as he wont be getting anything from PSU w/o a release. He doesn't HAVE to attend anything at ISU. However, as stated previously, he would need to then pay for his schooling (or get money for smarts), and he'd burn a year of eligibility.
Every coach plays a role in a kids decision to go to a particular school. Look at football, every season there is a large % of coaches moving around. The athletes ultimately get screwed.
If he chooses to go to ISU still and is unmotivated, then thats his choice and speaks volumes about him as a person. I find it hard to believe that will be the case.
Be chill Joe. I wrestled D-III without a scholarship so I don't know all the rules for D-I wrestlers. You're right about committing to a school first and not the coach, and also about the money being given to the kid. Those financial resources could've been allocated to a different wrestler but they set them aside for Taylor. Any other wrestler with near as much talent has already committed elsewhere as well, so if Taylor leaves at this point ISU gets screwed. Fair enough.
But in previous interview footage Taylor spoke highly of Sanderson, and that played a crucial role in his committing to ISU in the first place. So part of my question still stands: If Taylor has to go to ISU for any time at all, how motivated is he gonna be to work or even go to class? Especially if he plans to follow Sanderson over to Penn State. It seems like a terrible sidetrack for his career. He can probably suck it up and deal but I wouldn't blame him if he has some hard feelings for it.
It truly is amazing how many people state things with no clue about what they are talking about. Yes, he can ask to be let out of his LOI, will it happen? Probably not. Coaching changes happen all the time in wrestling. Thats why people are instructed to commit to a SCHOOL not a coach. He could just go to PSU and sit out a year and use his RS, no big deal. Why would ISU make it easy for the kids that were recruited with their $$ to go to a different school?
i believe that taylor can ask for ISU to release him from his commitment and if they do he can go anywhere he pleases and wreslte immediately. If ISU were to not release him, taylor would lose a year of eligibility, which i think can count as his redshirt
Can't he ask to be released from his letter of intent? If you choose a school for a certain coach and he leaves before you ever take a class there, how can a school try to lock you in? Who's gonna work or wrestle their ass off for a school they don't wanna be at? If a violinist chooses a college because he wants to study under a master, he is free to follow that instructor somewhere else if the situation arises with no penalty. That's what you pick a school for--to excell in the best way possible under the instruction you want.
It was a little different with Metcalf, Borschel and those guys because the VT program was being built around them. I'm not sure they should have lost a year of elligibility but having to wait one year is the norm. They might have been penalized too much.
varner and the other juniors such as sanderson will stay at isu because if they transfer they lose a year and they only have one last year. so to compete the older members of the team will stay with isu. taylor on the other hand could easily leave after one year. Obviously many of the wrestlers are waiting to see who isu will bring in next as their coach before they decide what they will do, but i think taylor will leave.
yes, he can transfer to penn state and no, he doesn't have to sit out 2 years, he has to sit out 1 year. signing a letter of intent only locks you in to that school for 1 academic school year. so if taylor wants to go to penn state he could essentially take his redshirt his first year of college and then wrestle for penn state as a redshirt freshman. that is of course if he wishes to transfer. this is what metcalf and the others did when they all left virginia tech to come to iowa with tom brands.
I believe he is allowed to transfer as long as the reason he originally signed with ISU was because of Cael. Mike Grey if you remember had originally signed with Lehigh thinking that chris ayres was going to be there and then changed his mind when ayres took the job at princeton.
he will be going. He will not attend ISU next year and work on his stuff back in Ohio and then head to PSU. He signed because of Cael 100% and will follow him to PSU
I sure hope so. penn state has no one at 133 next season now that jake strayer graduated. he could start immediately at that weight and have a huge impact.
