Three weeks apart Jake HErbert won the Hodge and OW at the US Open. Has that ever happened? What does it say bout Jake "strongman" Herbert and what does it say bout our National Team?

You people are stupid. Medved, Karelin, and Saitiev are the holy trinity of wrestling. Smith, Beloglazov, Fadzaev, and Baumgartner are close.

And Cael Sanderson is the God of Wrestling, with Herbert being Jesus. The Jesus is debatable.

There is no way that Metcalf is considered Jesus of Wrestling. Maybe MAYBE Caldwell but it is not Metcalf.

No, he won the Tournament MVP. Not the Hodge!

i hate to assume anything but im guessing the two champions you mentioned were black for a reason. those two are exceedingly talented, and intelligent, well composed young men. but this thread is about jake herbert, and any that would have matched his accolades. both caldwell and *boroughs are first time champions, and caldwell has only one year to repeat. as for Jordan, we may very well be discussing him in a few years.

I outright reject all of your predispositions that I am "hating" Metcalf. I have posted many positive comments about the guy, and will again when he does something to earn it. Unfortunately, until he does something to over shadow that beat down, that is what the wrestling community as a whole will remembered him for.

Herbert dominated all year and when it counted most. Metcalf did not and shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as Herbert.

Herbert is a stud, who should have won the hodge, but the ow at the us open? Come on. nobody even scored on varner, and mocco had 2 pins and 2 techs...seriously. it is a big deal that he won, no question, but he was not the most outstanding wrestler at that tournament.

I think some people will make any thread about hating metcalf around here, too much of "themat" overflow coming around here.

man, why the hate of Metcalf. The guy took second at the US Open his junior year in college. He is an NCAA champ and a good dude from everything that I can tell. If you want to say that the victory will define Caldwell's career that is one thing, but Metcalf has a lot more in store. The haterade punch is down the hall on another site.

Why is anyone even talking about Metcalf in the same vain with Herbet? Didn't the Caldwell beat down of Metcalf more or less define his career?

It's impressive, no question. Then again, in 1987-1988, John Smith won two NCAA titles, a World title, and an Olympic gold medal. That's the bar that people like Metcalf and Herbert need to be trying to get over, in my opinion. Until we think like that, we'll always be also-rans to the Russians.

I think Mr Herbert has improved so much since his redshirt Olympic year he is a force to be reconded with.We have a bunch of young talented wrestlers to be truthful alot of our guys have gotten older and have lost a few steps we need new blood along with sharp coaching surely Cale sanderson duplicated this feat or larry Smith?

I think it just shows Jake's ability to compete at that stage. Much like a J Jaggers he can compete with anyone in the world when its all on the line. I just hope no matter the outcome at the 2012 Olympics he doesn't stop there! i think that US wrestlers need to have goals that consist of multiple world and Olympic medals.

I think first off it is a great accomplishment for Jake and shows he has the potential to do great things on the next level. But I also think it shows that our country lacks depth and that showed greatly at this years nationals. I believe a variety of factors came into play that stole some of this years firepower.
1. Economy - Not alot of also rans in the mix and stands were bare at times.
2. Start of 4 yr Cylce - With the olympics over it is this time that some take off to gear up for the next 3 years
3. Old Gaurd - Fact is a lot of the old names were are used to seeing have retired or moved on
Those are just some of what I assume to be many reasons. But take nothing away from Jake he is a beast.
