Best High School wrestler ever?

Mike James 3 months ago

So many good high school wrestlers out these days, and then all these true freshman becoming all americans, who do you think is the best high school wrestler of all time?  I find it hard not to say Corey Jantzen (this may have been his brother, jesse, not sure) but he placed at Midlands.  Regardless of guys like Marstler and Grajales, I don't think they can compete with a great performance at one of the best college tournaments in the nation.

Kolat. End of discussion.

Kolat is a badass but it doesn't change the fact that Schultz took 2nd at Tblisi. Talking about kids who haven't even made it across the high school stage and received their diploma yet seems silly.

Cary Kolat and not one else comes close. 137-0, 4 X State Champion, OW each year (no one else has ever done that in the entire country I believe), only 10 wrestlers out of 137 made it the entire 6 minutes - that means he pinned or tech falled 127 wrestlers, pinned or technical fall every wrestler at State tournament, Junior world champion, placed twice at midlands in high school, P4P best wrestler his senior year - Asic All-American. Here he is his senior year: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTTRJemDGUc
He was also only reversed 5 times in his high school career and never turned for back points.

I appreciate that I am not the first one to mention Dave Schultz. If you are taking into account Freestyle and Greco, which you should be, Dave Schultz is by far the most accomplished High School wrestler of all time. Instead of writing it out myself I cut this from Wikipedia:

His high school wrestling records had qualified him to compete on his first U.S. international team in the Tblisi Tournament in Soviet Georgia, considered by many in the wrestling community as the "toughest tournament in the world." Schultz earned a silver medal and was the highest-placing American at the tournament. Due to the timing of Tblisi, Schultz failed to qualify for the California State Championships, but his coach Ed Hart successfully petitioned the state coaches association to allow him to compete. Wrestling two weight classes above his normal division, Schultz pinned all his opponents in the state championships but the last, whom he defeated 12-1 in the final match. Later that year he won his first national title by winning the U.S. National Open Greco-Roman Championships and won the award for most falls in the least amount of time. Schultz's senior year is considered by most experts as the most successful senior year in U.S. high school wrestling history.

Feel free not to comment on this post anymore unless you are talking about the second best.
Thank You.

Colat, Taylor, and Grahales are all elite and worthy of discussion. I think you could make an argument that Wesley's name should be thrown into the mix as well. If it hadn't been for his loss to Bunner then we would be talking about this guy as one of the best ever, if not the best.

Kolat, no contest. Everyone who debates otherwise should check out this Sports Illustrated piece from his senior year of high school - http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1003637/1/index.htm
