My overall Shanametrics was a large range of 3-8 based on avg medals of 5.6 medals won since '68. USA won 4 medals which is below my guess/avg of 5.6 but with 2 golds (3 freestyle, 1 women, 0 Greco) which made everyone feel great! How many medals will we win in Brazil? Based on trends and another lazy hypothesis my pick for 2016 is 5 medals which is about our avg and one more that we did this time.
Two medals won out of 13 so far...4 weights to go and possible 4 medals as of this writing. What are your predictions now?
Eddie N,Point taken. What will it take for USA to dominate men's wrestling like Russa and Women's wrestling like Japan?
ShannynAgree that he made some good points on how sports are supported in other countries by their governments.Just feel though that he doesn't realize how strong the Americans wrestling team is this Olympics.
If you were to believe what this so called Olympic historian had to say, it would most likely be very few medals to none at all.Check it out...http://www.npr.org/2012/07/23/157248905/dont-count-on-a-u-s-medal-in-badminton-canoeingThe flo guys need to call this guy up and interview him!!!!

matthew s, your suggestoin of 17 golds got me thinking...USA medals at other Olympics: 1988 Seoul 61984 Los Angeles 13 (iron curtain boycott)1980 Moscow 0 (USA boycott )1976 Montreal 61972 Munich 61968 Mexico City 233 medals in 6 Games is 5.5 average medals per Olympics won in that 20 year period.Boycotts sort of cancel each other out if you look at historical numbers per games.

Shanametrics - mathematic equations ridiculously created by ShannynMy best guestimation is 5.6 medals based on Shanametrics: 17 medals divided by 3 sports equals 5.6.Rounded up/down equals 5 or 6 medals which is close that other average above.Plus or minus 2 gives you 8 or 3.So, if you are still with Shanametrics, we will win between 3-8 medals or 5.6
I want Team USA to win 7 freestyle, 6 Greco, & 4 women's medals to total 17 in all.
Women's:Clarissa Chun: BronzeKelsey Campbell: BronzeElena Pirozhkova: DNPAli Bernard: DNPGreco-Roman (I don't know too much about GR, so I'm just basing off what I've seen from them):Spenser Mango: BronzeEllis Coleman: BronzeHarry Lester: DNPBen Provisor: DNPChas Betts: DNPDremiel Byers: GoldMen's Freestyle:Sam Hazewinkel: DNPColeman Scott: BronzeJared Frayer: DNPJordan Burroughs: DNP (Kidding, Gold obviously!)Jake Herbert: BronzeJake Varner: GoldTervel Dlagnev: GoldSo I'm guessing 10. Of course, I'm hoping that my guess is a bit underestimating of the team's true potential.. We'll see soon! This team is lookin' great so far!
Tough question.
Here's a quick Olympic review - USA medals won in bold:1992 Barcelona 8 1996 Atlanta 82000 Sydney 72004 Athens 62008 Beijing 3
32 medals in 5 Games is 6.4 average medals per Olympics won in that 16 year period.
Averages do not give accurate conclusions many times and there appears to be a downward trend in the medal count and this could be meaningless too...
