It is amazing to see how similar the styles are btwn '92 and '12 teams. This is a great question with a lot of right answers. We are all biased (if you are of a certain age) because we have results to influence our perceptions. I cannot wait for you to revisit this question in September after the games. Again, great job stirring the pot. |

AC's comment reminded me of the purported conversation Ty Cobb had with a reporter. The reporter asked Cobb, "if you were playing baseball today what do you think your batting average would be?". Cobb said, "only about .325". The reporter then said, "is that because of night games, better gloves, different baseballs, etc?". And Cobb replied in a huff, "no, its because I'm 75 years old"! |

Craig ~~ Not even Close... 1992 Team- Wins- Hands Down....and Kenny Monday.... would have more "Air-Time" ....on Burroughs...Then Delta-Airlines can give out.....Monday was a "STUD" ....every time Burrough's would try to hit a Double....He would find Himself in the Next State....Kyle Klingman of The Wrestling Mall wrote an article a few years back about his thoughts on the 92 v 72 team. Some of the scores are ridiculous, but it's a fun read.. http://www.wrestlingpod.com/wrestling-news/w1391/us-olympic-freestyle-dream-dual-1972-vs-1992/ |

I think the big difference is we need guys doing two or three Olympic cycles like John,Kenny, and Bruce. I know it's hard to compare different eras but I think the 1992 team was very special and in my opinion would wax this years Olympic team. Obviously MMA will continue to draw some of our elite wrestlers away and I know it would take big time money but USA Wrestling needs to sign our elite athletes to nice contracts through Olympic cycles. I know the money for winning gold, etc but in my opinion that's not enough. What is Burroughs getting paid right now by USA Wrestling? |

Really don't think athletes today are superior athletely to today's athletes. I actually think that back in 92 guys were more athletic. There were more three sport athletes than today's athletes that focus on one sport. One this for sure is guys were 10 times tougher back then. Technique has not evolve that much since 92. We really haven't had a guy like John smith that change they way we wrestling. Everybody tried to be a John Smith, then it was Cael, now Burroughs. Guys can not duplicate Burroughs style. I think now we focus too much on technique instead of god giving athletic ability. I love Metcalf to death but he looks like a robot out there. He is really a athletic guy that need to use his god giving ability. |

Yikes, agree with the other comments (mostly a drubbing by the '92 team), but Burroughs in his prime (now) beats Monday in '92. Not sure about the outcome if it was the '88 Monday. Also, re the 'best training to beat JB's style', I don' think it's possible to train to beat raw speed. Who can they train with to duplicate it? Like trying to train to defense Tom Brady. |

I think Varner is a favorite in both those match-ups primarily due to defense being more advanced today than back then. Campbell won bronze in '92 but gave up more points than Varner does against elite wrestlers. Dlagnev won't go down as one of our all-time greats whereas Baumgartner is the most decorated American by far, but if Tervel can beat Taymazov then it's a mistake to think of that match as a foregone conclusion especially given the 20 years of technical advancements. Burroughs-Monday is a dream match-up, no idea who would win. If Jordan wins the Olympics after all the best have trained to beat his style then I would give him the edge. Think of it this way, maybe '88 or '89 Monday is better than 2011 Burroughs, but it's hard to fathom 1992 Park Jang Soon as better than the best performer at 2011 World Championships (according to Russian coach). All the other match-ups the '92 team destroys 2012. |

The only match that today's team MAY win is the Varner matchup, period. |

with the London Games quickly approaching, I was hoping to get a fun discussion going about the USA Olympic Team 20 years ago v. today's team..
Keep in mind that the 1992 team had one of the best US performances, coming away with 3 Golds, 2 Silvers, & 1 Bronze.
Since there’s only 7 weights today v. 10 in 1992, I have to adjust for today’s weights..
How do you guys think each team would fare?
2012 team v. 1992 team
55 Sam Hazewinkle v. Zeke Jones
60 Coleman Scott v. Kendall Cross
*60 kg Coleman Scott v. John Smith
66 Jared Frayer v. Townsend Saunders
74 Jordan Burroughs v. Kenny Monday
84 Jake Herbert v. Kevin Jackson
96 Jake Varner v. Chris Campbell
*96 Jake Varner v. Mark Coleman
120 Tervel Dlagnev v. Bruce Baumgartner
