Niko Villarreal over Alex Cisneros at the califronia state meet, Cisneros a 3X state champ going for his fourth got tossed for 5 in the last 10 seconds from a throw that came out of no where after being up 3-0. Could be the greatest high school upset ever.

No one mentioned Lee Kemp at only 18 yrs of age, over Gable? I believe that was a shocker at the time, Kemp never lost a single college match for next 3 yrs.

Blubaugh and Rulon have to tie for biggest upsets. Excecpt for the time I wrestled myself and caught myself in a lucky cradle. I was devastated.

Without question the biggest American upset was Owings vs Gable. Ironically it was the same thing that was the factor between Brands and Cross in '96, I used to wrestle with one of Owings' college practice partners and it all came Down to tecnique in a scramble. Ironically Brands said that he was never a good technician so he made it up by brawling. It was also Spokane where Cross finalized his bit for the olympic seat and earned his medal. I my opinion it was in Spokane where Cross received his Olympic gold

Henry Cejudo was not the favorite to win the Olympics, but I don't think his victory was THAT shocking. He had beaten a defending Olympic medallist (Abas 2x), the Cuban bronze medallist several times, and Kudukhov once before wrestling at the Olympics.;

Stephen Dutton, every year at states loil

Rob Teet 2 years ago

When Rob Teet pinned Neil Cook in 8 second, 2007.. Cook was the 187 pound national champion in BW, while Teet was 3rd at 150 lbs. Cook went for an Over-&-Under toss, and Teet caught him on his back. Biggest upset in wrestling, if you follow ALL aspects of wrestling.

Rulon Beats the russian

I gotta say, probably Cejudo because he came outta nowhere to win gold, nobody expected it.

Darryly Vaskquez over Jacob Palomino in the 2001 CA state finals. Palomino was a 3 returning state champ looking to become the first ever 4 time champion in California. Vasquez was a 2 time returning champ losing to Palomino at the Doc Buchanan earlier in the year. Beats Palomino in the biggest match in California history and the next year becomes the first ever 4 time champion

Jason Betz from Warrior Run HS was a three time PIAA state Champion. He was pinned in his fourth state tournament via a spladle. He was denied his fourth state title. Went on to wrestle at Penn State.

Blubaugh is an old school upset, I remember when he told me the story of that match. Caught the guy in a bad shot, happens to the best of them.

Baltimore! 2 years ago

Marianettii over McIlravy deserves to be in top 10. Larry Owings over Dan Gable has to be #1. Even people outside of wrestling have heard of that.
