Virginia is known for having far more NCAA D-1 college wrestling teams *per capita* than many states. Perhaps it's because Virginia has 4 different high school state tourneys per year, inspiring interest among that many more people? In contrast, California's NCAA teams are dropping like flies while it continues having just 1 state tourney. And Texas has just one men's and one women's college wrestling team in the NAIA and none in the NCAA, to match its lone state h.s. tourney for guys, and its additional one for gals.

Illinois. Great talent at the high school level but mediocrity at the college level (minus a few) and a refusal to stay in state to wrestle. The University of Illinoi should compete for a big ten title every year and a nationat title every few years.
Oregon has produced some great wrestlers also.. Robin Reed Olympic Gold.. Rick Sanders 2X NCAA, 1st American World Champ, 2 Silver Olympic medals... Less Gutches 2x NCAA Champ...
