Jon Weber Wins Beast of the East!

January 15 at 8:22pm
Jon Weber followed up his 5th place finish at the Ironman with a Championship at the Beast of the East, regarded by many was the toughest tournament in the country! Jon received a first round bye, picked up a pin and then went on a string of victories over the #11 seed, #3 seed and then in the finals knocked off the #4 seed, Ben Krakower(Blair) SR. Jon's semifinal and finals matches were some of the most exciting of the tournament as he weathered the early rounds to wear down his opponents and then picked up the wins, each in the final 2 seconds of the match. In the finals, Jon blocked a nice double leg shot in the final 10 seconds of a 1-1 match and was able to clear one leg and swing around behind for the win. Braden Carter battled his way back from a first round upset to come back to place 7th. Braden lost to an unranked wrestler that made it to the semifinals and finished 4th in the tournament. Resnick of Pencrest may not have been ranked, but he was a very good wrestler that no one seemed to know. In Braden's match with Resnick, Resnick was able to score a quick takedown on a collar tie passby and was able to score quick back points to put Braden in a hole very early. I should note too that Resnick was able to do this same thing to every wrestler he faced including #1 seed and national #1 ranked Ed Ruth of Blair. After that match, Braden was able to pick up 3 pins and 2 decisions before running into #1 Ruth. Braden battled hard but got caught in one 5 point move that cost him, losing 6-2 to the national #1 Ruth. Braden then had the wrestler that had knocked Ruth out of the Championship side in the first round, Matt Mullet of Mount St Joseph's in Maryland. Braden picked up the pin and the 7th place finish. Devin Carter picked up 3 pins and then defeated the #7 seed by a major decision. In the semifinals, Devin was up against the #6 seed and national #12 ranked Robert Deutsch or Eastern Regional in NJ. Devin was able to win, by a 6-1 margin. That set up a finals match up with Evan Silver of Blair. Silver came into the Beast as the # 6 ranked national 112. Silver was able to get in on a good shot late in the 1st period and picked up the takedown against Devin. Devin picked up a quick escape. For the remainder of the match Silver, who is very stocky and strong, was able to play defense and not open up any chances for Devin to score allowing Silver to pick up the 3-1 win. David Cheney again was knocked out one round from placing, going 4-2. Rich Eva, Tyler Miles and Derek Woody went 3-2. As a team, the Blue Demons finished 7th, ahead of at least 2 teams ranked higher than them. Not a bad job for a team that had 7 kids wrestling at the Beast for the very first time!

Devin Carter Wins Ironman!

January 15 at 8:20pm
Devin Carter avenged one of last year's losses by defeating Hunter Stieber in the Ironman Finals. Devin won by the score of 8-4 over the #2 ranked wrestler in the country. Devin defeated Mason Beckman, ranked #13, 12-0 and Jerome Robinson, ranked #10, 8-0. Braden Carter lost a close 7-6 match to the top seed, #2 ranked Ethan Lofthouse in the semifinals. One the way to finishing 5th. Jon Weber also drew the top seed in the semifinals #7 Joe McMullan. Jon jumped out to a quick lead before McMullan rallied to win. Jon finished 5th also.
