USA Wrestling Preseason Folkstyle Nationals
Nine members of the Trojan Wrestling family competed at the USA Wrestling Preseason Folkstyle National tournament at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa on October 31, 2009.
High School Division
• 103 - Philip Laux: Finished with a 2-2 record.
• 112 - Jack Hathaway: Finished in 2nd Place with a 5-1 record.
• 130 - Garret Hathaway: Finished with a 3-2 record.

Fall Brawl
Blue Chip Fall Brawl
Three members of the Trojan Wrestling family competed at the Blue Chip Fall Brawl at Staley High School near Kansas City, Missouri on October 17, 2009.
High School Division:
• 112 – Jack Hathaway: Finished in 2nd Place with a 4-1 record. Jack reached the finals match by recording three pins before losing by decision to Fargo All-American, Bricker Dixon of Missouri.
• 135 – Garrett Hathaway: Finished in 4th Place with a 5-2 record. Garrett had a pin and two major decisions.
• 215 – Mickey Pelfrey: Finished in 3rd Place with a 3-1 record. Mickey had a pin and a major decision.
Fargo
Cadet and Junior National Greco Roman Tournament 7/18-21
Five members of the Trojan wrestling team competed at the Cadet and Junior National Greco Roman Tournament in Fargo, ND. In the Cadet portion of the tournament, Justin Koethe finished with a runner up finish. Koethe finished the tournament with an 8-1 record losing a hard fought battle in the finals to Brad Dolezal of Wisconsin. This was the 4th meeting between Koethe and Dolezal this summer in Greco Roman with each wrestler winning 2 of the meetings. Gradey Gambrall and Jack Hathaway also competed in the Cadet Greco Roman tournament. Gambrall finished with a 2-2 record with both losses to the wrestlers that finished 2nd and 4th. Hathaway lost his first two matches, both going 3 periods, with one of those losses to the eventual runner up. Both Gambrall and Hathaway had victories this summer over other wrestlers that placed in their brackets.
In the Junior portion of the tournament, Jack Hathaway finished with a 4-2 record and a 5th place finish. Hathaway’s losses were to last year’s national champion and this year’s national champion. Also competing in the Junior competition was David Solis and Max Pelfrey. Both Solis and Pelfrey gained valuable experience through camp and the Fargo experience.
Cadet and Junior National Freestyle Tournament 7/22-25
Four members of the Trojan Wrestling team competed at the Cadet and Junior National Freestyle tournament in Fargo, ND. Justin Koethe reached the finals for the 2nd time in a week and capitalized on the opportunity this time in winning his Cadet National title. Koethe finished the tournament with a 9-0 record and did not lose a period on his way to the title. Gradey Gambrall also competed in the Cadet Freestyle tournament and just missed finishing in the top 8. Gambrall’s 3 period loss in the 5th round turned out to be the difference in becoming an all American.
In the Junior division, Derek St John finished his career at West High winning this 3rd national title of the season. St John won 9 matches on and surrendered no periods on his way to the freestyle title. St John had also won the Junior Folkstyle and FILA Junior Freestyle national titles this spring. Jack Hathaway put himself in the National Title match but came up a bit short in his title bout and finished in 2nd. Hathaway had 5 wins including 4 pins on his route to the finals. It was Hathaway’s 3rd All American honor of the spring.
Linn Mar
Varsity
In a rare Monday night dual meet, the Trojan Varsity Wrestling team hosted the Linn-Mar Lions in Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) action. The meet was originally scheduled for December 18 but was postponed due to weather. Jack Hathaway, ranked 8th in 3A, highlighted the evening’s 68-3 victory with a major decision over 10th ranked Greg Keating. Trojan wrestlers are 4-0 in the MVC and 21-2 overall.

The Trojans won nine of twelve junior varsity bouts as well as five of seven exhibition matches on the night. Trojan wrestlers are 3-1 in the MVC and 3-1 overall.

Lepic Duals
Lepic Duals Tournament
The Trojan Wrestling Varsity team Hosted the Lepic Duals Tournament on Saturday, January 10, 2009, finishing 1st with a 5-0 record. West defeated three other class 3A teams ranked in the top ten by the Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association.
Weather prevented the anticipated #1-2A-IA Ballard (Huxley) verses #2-3A-IA Iowa City West dual. However, #10-3A-IA Fort Dodge, who had traveled to Cedar Rapids on Friday night, replaced Ballard when the Benton Community tournament was cancelled.

The entire Trojan team battled hard throughout the day. Leading the way for the Trojans were Justin Koethe, Nick Moore, and Derek St John with 5-0 records. Justin, ranked 7th in Class 3A, recorded a decision over Julian Feikert of Keokuk who is current 1st ranked in Class 3A and is a returning state runner-up. Nick, ranked 1st in Class 3A, had falls over the 8th ranked wrestlers at 145 and 152. Derek had 5 falls in 7 minutes and 13 seconds including 8th ranked Trevor Clark of Fort Dodge.
Jack Hathaway, Gradey Gambrall, Dylan Carew, and David Solis were all 4-1 on the day. Jack, ranked 8th in Class 3A, dropped a close decision to 4th ranked Corey Clark of Southeast Polk when he was reversed and rode out late in the third period. Gradey began the day by defeating 10th ranked Chris Hoskins of Keokuk. Dylan was upset in his final match of the day by 2nd ranked (Class AAA) Elias Larsen of Marian Catholic, Illinois. Nearly perfect on the day, David lost a close decision to Taylor Bowie of Southeast Polk.
Hunter St. John was 3-1 while John Skarda, Berkley Strand, and Matt Behnami were all 3-2.

The Clash
The Clash 7
The Trojan Wrestling Varsity team competed in The Clash 7 dual team wrestling tournament on Friday, January 2 and Saturday, January 3, 2008, at University Center Field House in Rochester, Minnesota. This 32 team tournament included 15 listed on Amateur Wrestling News (AWN) Prep 40, which ranks the top forty high school teams in the nation.
On the first day of competition, the AWN 17th ranked Iowa City West Trojans finished 5th in Bracket A. The Trojans were upset in the opening round of competition by Perham, Minnesota. After the slow start, the Trojans rebounded with a solid defeat of Vacaville, California. In the final Bracket A dual, the Trojans beat AWN 36th ranked Brown High School from Sturgis, South Dakota in a dual that was decided by tie breaker 3 criteria, more 6-point victories. Iowa City West had three 6-point victories with two falls and a forfeit verses Browns two falls.
Based the Bracket A finish, the Trojans finished 1st in Division 5 during the second day of competition. In the first dual of the day, the Trojans beat Neuqua Valley High School from Naperville, Illinois. Then, The Iowa City West defeated AWN 20th ranked Skutt Catholic High School from Omaha, Nebraska. In the Division 5 finals, the Trojans avenged their early season loss by beating AWN 25th Ranked Waverly Shell Rock.
Day 1: Bracket A – 5th Place:
• Round 1: Iowa City West 30 – #2-2A-MN Perham, Minnesota 34.
• Round 2: Iowa City West 57 – #7-CA Vacaville, California 7.
• Round 3: Iowa City West 31 – #36-AWN & #1-A-SD Brown, Sturgis, South Dakota 31.
o Iowa City West defeats Brown on Criteria 3 – More six point matches (3 to 2).
Day 2: Division 5 - Champions:
• Round 1: Iowa City West 40 – #4-2A-IL Neuqua Valley, Naperville, Illinois 21.
• Round 2: Iowa City West 39 – #20-AWN & #1-B-NE Skutt Catholic, Omaha, Nebraska 32.
• Round 3: Iowa City West 36 – #25-AWN & #1-3A-IA Waverly Shell Rock 25.
Nineteen Trojan Wrestlers saw action in the two-day tournament. Six wrestlers finished with unblemished records, including Dylan Carew, Nick Moore, Derek St. John, Jack Hathaway, Colin Lord, and Griffin Weihe.
Dylan, ranked #3 nationally by AWN, was 6-0 and named to the All-Tournament team as the Outstanding Wrestler in the 145 weight class. Nick, ranked #3 nationally, was 6-0 with four falls and 2 major decisions. Nick also notched his 100th career victory during the weekend. Derek, ranked #1 nationally, was also 6-0 and had an impressive win over Nick Proctor (Neuqua Valley, IL) along with two falls. While he did not give-up an offense point in the tournament, he was likely overlooked for the All-Tournament Team since three teams decided to forfeit to him.
Jack was 5-0 with nice wins over Thomas Gilman (Omaha Scutt via Council Bluffs) and Tanner Werner (Waverly Shell Rock). West's alternate wrestler, Griffin Weihe was 1-0 received a forfiet against Neuqua Valley, Illinois. If Jack had received the forfeit, he would have been 6-0 for the tournament, qualifying for consideration to the all-tournament team. Colin Lord was 1-0 with a decision.
Garrett Hathaway was 4-2 for the tournament with 4 decisions, advenging an early season loss by defeating 10th ranked Luke Pint of Waverly Shell Rock. Justin Koethe was also 4-2 defeating the South Dakota’s #1 ranked wrestler Rex Lyon. Hunter St. John and Matt Behnami both finished with 3-3 records while David Solis finished with a 2-2 record.

Dvorak Invitational
21st Annual Al Dvorak Memorial Wrestling Invitational
The Trojan Wrestling Varsity team competed in the Al Dvorak Memorial Wrestling Invitational on Monday, December 22 and Tuesday, December 23, 2008, at Harlem High School in Machesney Park, Illinois. This 32 team tournament included teams from Illinois, Ohio, Texas, and Wisconsin. The Trojans finished third as a team while having eight wrestlers place.
Winning championships for the Trojans were Derek St John and Nick Moore, both finishing with a 4-0 record. Derek, ranked #1 nationally by Amateur Wrestling News (AWN), was named the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler after beating Bishop Lynch’s Justin Armstrong by major decision in the semi-finals and Montini Catholic’s Isaiah Gonzalez by 14-7 decision in the finals. Nick Moore, ranked #7 nationally by AWN, was also impressive with an 8-6 upset victory of AWN #6 ranked Bobby Barnhisel of Fenwick High School.
Jack Hathaway finished in third place with a 5-1 record including 2 falls, 2 major decisions, and a decision. Jack was strong in the wrestle backs after suffering a heart breaking lose in the quarterfinals to host school’s Derek Elmore of Harlem High School. Justin Koethe finished in fourth place with a 5-2 record including 4 falls and a decision. Both of Justin’s loses came at the hands of Neuqua Valley’s Andy Spangler. Matt Behnami also finished in fourth place with a 3-2 record including a fall and 2 decisions. Hunter St. John finished in sixth place with a 3-3 record including a fall, a major decision, and a decision. Hunter reached the semi-finals by pinning Montini Catholic’s Troy Valdez in the quarter finals. Garrett Hathaway finished in seventh place with a 5-2 record including 2 falls, a major decision and 2 decisions. Garrett avenged a second round lose to Bishop Lynch’s Marc Rocha in the seventh place match. AJ Bailey finished in eighth place with a 4-3 record including 3 falls and a decision.

Cedar Rapids Duals, 12/13
The Trojans competed at the CR Duals and finished 2nd with a 3-1 record. The Trojans opened the day with a 53-16 victory over #8 ranked in 2A Charles City, followed that up with a 55-15 victory over #9 ranked Waterloo East, then downed #7 Bettendorf 47-18 before falling to #1 ranked Waverly Shell Rock 37-33. Leading the way for the Trojans were Justin Koethe, Nick Moore, and Derek St John with 4-0 records. Justin had 2 falls in his 4 wins. Nick had 2 falls and a major decision, while Derek had a fall, a technical fall, and a major decision. Jack Hathaway, Jon Skarda, Gradey Gambrall, Garrett Hathaway, Tracy Bowers, AJ Bailey, and Matt Behnami were 3-1 on the day. David Solis and Dexter Curry finished 2-2 on the day while Brandon Kuehl was 1-3. The Trojans stand 9-1 on the young season.
Waterloo West
Waterloo West, 12/11
The traveled to Waterloo West for the 2nd MVC conference meet and came away with a 48-17 victory. Garrett Hathaway, Derek St John, Matt Behnami, and Jack Hathaway won by fall for the Trojans. Nick Moore and David Solis added technical falls, Justin Koethe and Dexter Curry added major decisions, while Jon Skarda and Gradey Gambrall won by decision. The Trojans improved to 2-0 in the MVC and 6-0 overall.
Waterloo West JV, 12/11
The Trojans traveled to Waterloo and dropped a close dual to the Wahawks 33-28. Winning for the Trojans were: Andrew Topping (130) by a fall, Mike Watkins (160) by major decision, Colin Lord (119), Ben Goerdt (125) by decision, and Alejandro Garcia-Lair by forfeit. Winners in the exhibition matches were: Ike Layman (135) by fall, Ivan Zoluaga (160) by fall, and Mike Watkins (160) by fall.

The Trojans won the Newton Duals with wins over Johnston, Indianola, Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson and Newton. The Trojans defeated Johnston 63-13, Indianola 40-27, Council Bluffs TJ 76-4, and Newton 48-18. Leading the way for the Trojans were Jack Hathaway, Hunter St John, Nick Moore, and Derek St John with 4-0 records. Nick had 3 falls and a major decision in his wins. Derek had 2 falls and a tech fall in his victories. Jack and Hunter had one fall in their 4 victories. Jon Skarda, Garrett Hathaway, Justin Koethe, AJ Bailey, David Solis, Matt Behnami, and Brandon Kuehl were all 3-1 on the day. Tracy Bowers and Dexter Curry were 2-2, while Colin Lord finished 1-1 on the day. The Trojans stand at 5-0 in duals on the season and 1-0 in the MVC.

The Trojans started the MVC season with a resounding 57-16 victory at Cedar Rapids Jefferson. Recording falls for the Trojans were Tracy Bowers, Justin Koethe, Nick Moore, Derek St John, and Garrett Hathaway. Jack Hathaway and David Solis added victories by forfeit. Matt Behnami, Jon Skarda, and Colin Lord recorded major decisions while Hunter St John added a victory by decision.
Cedar Rapids Jefferson JV 12/4
The Trojans kicked off the 08-09 season with a conference dual meet victory at Cedar Rapids Jefferson, defeating the Jayhawks 40-24. Adam Millers (140) won by a major decision and Cole Anderson (171) won by a fall to lead the Trojans. Griffin Weihe (103), Andrew Topping (125), Roba Abdalla (130), Chris Narvaez (145), and Jon Stegall (152) all received forfeits. The win puts the Trojans at 1-0 in the MVC and 1-0 overall for the season.
Oklahoma Open
15 members of the Trojan Wrestling team competed in the Oklahoma Open in Norman, OK over the Thanksgiving weekend. The Trojan contingent placed 4 in the finals and 5 wrestlers finished in the top 3 of their weight classes. Winning titles were Dylan Carew and Derek St John. Dylan finished with 4 victories including a major decision on his way to his 2nd OU Open title. Derek finished the tournament with 5 falls in his 5 victories while winning his 2nd OU Open title. Placing 2nd in their weight classes were Jack Hathaway and Nick Moore. Jack won 4 of his 5 matches including a fall. Nick finished with a 4-1 record with 4 falls. Placing 3rd was Brandon Kuehl. Brandon won 4 matches in the wrestle backs after losing first round to earn his bronze medal. Justin Koethe and AJ Bailey both reached the semi finals before being eliminated from tournament. Justin had 3 falls in his 3 victories while AJ’s 3 victories included a fall and a major decision. Wrestlers who had 3 victories but failed to place were Hunter St John and Garrett Hathaway. Hunter had a fall and a major. Garrett had a fall and a tech fall. Wrestlers with 2 wins were Tracy Bowers and Matt Behnami with each recording a fall. Jon Skarda and David Solis finished with 1 victory. Griffin Weihe lost his first two matches to wrestlers in the top 8 and Gradey Gambrall was injured in his first round match and withdrew from the tournament.
Dowling Preseason Tournament, Nov 8
Six members of the Trojan Wrestling team competed at the Dowling Preseason tournament in Des Moines over the weekend. Gradey Gambrall won his bracket in the Open division while Adam Millers and Devonnie Moses won their brackets in the Novice division. All three wrestlers finished with a 3-0 record on the day. Also in the Open division, Justin Koethe finished 3rd, Hunter St John 4th, while AJ Bailey did not place. Koethe finished with a 3-1 record losing a 1 point decision in the semi finals. St John finished 2-2, while Bailey finished 1-2.
USAW Preseason Folkstyle Nationals, Oct. 25
Five members of the Trojan Wrestling Team competed at USA Wrestling’s Preseason Folkstyle Nationals in Des Moines over the weekend. Jack Hathaway finished with a 4-1 record and a 2nd place finish for the second consecutive week. Jack had 2 falls in his 4 wins on the day. Jon Skarda finished 1-2 on the day. One of Jon’s losses was to a nationally ranked wrestler from Wisconsin who is a defending state champion and a National Champion from Fargo and was named the outstanding wrestler of the tournament. Garrett Hathaway finished with a 2-2 record on the day with 2 falls. Garrett’s losses were at the hands of two Fargo All Americans and both matches were 1 point losses. Gradey Gambrall was 2-2 on the day with a fall and a major decision. Gradey lost to a state runner up from Michigan before losing a 1 point decision in the wrestle backs. Justin Koethe finished with a 2-2 record. Justin lost to a state runner up from Indiana who went on to win the tournament.
