The Arrowhead wrestling program strives to develop an exceptional student-athlete and a disciplined, competitive athletic team. Participants can expect a safe, and challenging environment, which builds excellence in skills, teamwork and character. The Warhawk coaching staff demonstrates a sincere interest in the personal, academic and athletic progress of all individuals involved.
The wrestling season begins in November with varsity, junior varsity and freshman level competitions and concludes at the end of February. Practices are held everyday and on some Saturdays in the Arrowhead South Campus lower gym. Competitions are typically held on Thursday evenings and Saturdays. An organizational meeting takes place the first week of November. In the past eleven years, the Warhawk wrestling team has become a Classic 8 Conference power crowning 54 conference champions and claiming conference tournament titles in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2008. 62 Warhawk grapplers have advanced to the WIAA Individual State Tournament with 34 claiming medals. Ben Askren - 2008 United States Olympian!
Arrowhead's own Ben Askren delivered a powerful performance in the United States Freestyle Wrestling Olympic Team Trials to make his first first World level team. He will compete in Beijing on August 20th in the 74kg weight class. Ben's road to the finals started with a bye and then he won 3-0, 1-1 over two-time NCAA champion Donny Pritzlaff. Next was a 1-0, 2-1 victory over Ramico Blackmon. Ben then secured his spot on the Olympic team by defeating former Oklahoma State star Tyrone lewis in a best of three match finals battle. Askren took the first match with a 2-0, 1-0 victory and finished the day with a 2-6, 2-0, 1-0 victory! Max Askren also competed in his first Olympic Team Trials at 96 kg. Max went 0-2 as the No. 5 seed. Max had a first round bye, lost to Damion Hahn 1-0, 5-2 and then to Nik Fekete of New York Athletic Club 1-0, 1-1 and 1-1. Max will be Ben's Olympic training partner in Beijing, China for the Olympic Games.
