jd his a great guy. i love this man, he's such great athlete/person. i'll be there for you buddy, help you get your world/olymic medal you deserve.
I just wish and hope more people like him should be in wrestling, or at list some others, listen to what he has to say in general,
i really believe, it would give so much to our sport, more respective people/followers and better and more good spectators/fans of the wrestling in general.....
god bless.. wrestling people, and athletes... jp.

call the waaaaaambulence.....no wonder we have a crap world team when our top guy at 211 is a cry-baby......SHUT UP

Mork 2 years ago

I agree with Yallow: call it like it is, and forget the rest. Mocco tried to start a boxing match in a wrestling match. Not good. He might be a nice guy, he might be a jerk. Doesn't matter to me. He's got to get a hold of his emotions or get the hell off the mat.

Thomas 2 years ago

Does anyone else see the humor behind a few tough guys talking on the internet to a guy who actually has the skill and work ethic to be one of the best wrestlers in the USA? You all sound like a bunch of cowards, honestly.

I mean the video clearly shows the guy punched him in the face repeatedly. You if you can't see that, you probably received an Iowa education.
...the two words flowrestling wants me to type to prove I'm not a spammer are "tervel wins." How about that?

JD, let me give you some public media advice: don't preface your criticism of Mocco by stating that 'he's your friend'....it's lame, and nobody cares. So what if he's your friend, the guy behaved like a maladjusted prepubescent idiot. Nobody with any freakin' sense is going to defend Mocco on this one, so don't worry about sounding "objective" by declaring him a friend. He behaved like a jerk. In other words, he was a complete moronic butthead out-of-control poor-sport loser fool. Call it like it is and leave it at that.

I think steve is a great wrestler but I would not like him representing our country and there should be some disciplinary action taken. This is NOT mma. Wrestling is something much more vital that shapes and molds the future of our finest young men and should not be taken lightly.

It is amazing how many people defend Brands' actions. Kobe Bryant just got fined $100,000 for remarks he made toward a ref. I have heard say much worst things to wrestler of other teams, let alone coaches and refs.
This is totally BS. You have never heard him say anything like this to anyone. I amazes me that people are as ignorant you about college wrestling and life in general.

Good points, JD. I just watched the Dlagnev -- Mocco match, and I can't believe Mocco wasn't immediately disqualified.

Great Bergman!

I agree, if consequences were enforced... Like fines, disqualifications, strong warnings that insist that the next match with such actions means being band from competing for a number of tournaments... Something along those lines should at least make people think before wrestling dirty, if there are no boundaries why wouldn't guys start punching and stepping outside the line of acceptable wrestling like in the Mocco Dlagnev match. What if he would have broken Dlagnev's nose or knocked a tooth out? Who is liable for that? Would it still have been brushed off that it was just Mocco's tough hand fighting so no big deal? People need to quit trying to defend these types of unacceptable actions no matter who the wrestler is, I'm sure Mocco isn't the only guy who has gotten away with this in our country. It's embarrassing.

Softy huh 2 years ago

you are so soft. how did you rep us at the worlds??
tarvel closed up the whole match, so mocco got flustered. he does not need a girl to come and defend him. someone should post brand's olympic semi's match. see what a real wrestler does when his opponent punches him.
Soft huh? JD just thinks like a grown man and professional athlete...You clearly think the USA needs to have someone represent our country when they haven't learned to be a grown up and still resort to "meet me in the hallway" to fight like a middle school bully. It's not positive for kids who look up to these grown MEN and see that it's ok to throw uppercuts when you didn't wrestle as well as the opponent in order to win... Oh ok, just punch him instead. That's wrestling? No. Anyone who thinks a "real man" should take tips from unsporstman like behavior clearly has no pride in being a respected world class athlete. And it's safe to say Mocco opened up and didn't just hand fight? Ha, right. They both had a game plan, both stuck to it and Dlagnev's worked. I think Mocco is a tough wrestler, but this match proves he can't represent our country respectably. Dlagnev handled the situation like man, didn't respond by loosing his temper and apparently didn't follow Mocco's request to fight after the match haha

JD, I agree with you 100%.

Tervel is the champ where it counts and glad he didn't give in the the other wrestler's lack off wrestling technique or proper punching for that matter...guess mma is out for steve too.

Next year at Carver Hawkeye Arena they're gonna add a special item to the concessions menu strictly for Ohio State fans:

The Ohio State Wha-a-a-a-a-a-a-amburger with French Cries

Also, at the door the CHA staff will be handing out FREE TISSUES to anyone wearing Ohio State colors!

Should be a good time!

First of all you need to understand why they don't shake hands. Iowa (and almost all other college programs) do not shake hands when they win either (which is 99.9% of the time). Shaking hands is overrated and not necessary, especially at that level. I hate watching UFC when they hug each other afterwards, that is just gay. No way would I hug a guy that just knocked me out because I would be pissed, because I'm competitive. Shaking hands is for fags and for people who accept 2nd place with pride. The Brands Bros are competitive, that is the winning mentality... not shaking hands comes with the territory, they are not in the sport to make friends they are in the sport to win. Dan Gable did the same thing, it's the same philosophy... a winning mentality that their guys are bought into. Tom Brands calls it and i quote "the Gable Edge." Where would wrestling be without the Iowa Wrestling dynasty and the "Gable Edge".... well I hate to say this but it may not be in existence.
I don't follow folkstyle much -- I am a freestyle junkie! -- so I wasn't aware of this refusal to shake hands thing. Is it really true that Iowa wrestlers don't shake hands? That's beyond messed up if it's true.

Kathy Gable 2 years ago

As far as the Brands brothers go, there are no bigger cry babies in the sport. I can't count the number of times they have walked off the mat and refused to shake hands when things didn't go their way.
True morals area full time commitment, not just when you are winning. I'm an old man and I remember the Brands brothers screwing up big time in HS and getting into huge trouble. People forget that stuff. I don't. I would never deal with people like that on or off the mat. Just because they won at the highest level doesn't mean they are good people.

With all due respect, I like Steven Mocco, but his actions were over the line and should have been dealt with by USA wrestling in some way. With all due respect, I don't like JD Bergman, but his point is valid....what I said "all due respect", it's in the Geneva convention.

Matt 2 years ago

I agree with what JD said. But, I also have to comment on the Iowa portion of this. Iowa is put under a magnifying glass way more than other teams and coaches. I am an NCAA official and I was in the stands watching the coaches and officials in regard to the corner rules they were supposed to be imposing at the tournament and noticed just as many horrible examples of otehr coaches. But, when it was Iowa it was weird how I could hear people all around me deploring their antics but being ok with everyone elses. The 2 Northwestern coaches were on teh mat at 2 different times pounding the mat with their hands at the out of bounds line !! Where was everybody complaining then?? Or when the same staff was standing toe to toe with the opposing staff screaming at each other?

USA Wrestling needs to subcontract the video coverage to FLO. Poor video, poor camera control, No editing, No tags….Half A$$

I love how Iowa gets fired up, but the coaching staff looked bad at NCAA’s this year. It is one thing to be fired up and fight for your guy, but when everything is done, to be yelling at officials, not shake hands is no good. And in the case of Zadic actually having to be held back from attacking another coach, on the floor no less, is something that needs addressed.
What happened with Zadick? I didn't see that. Did he really go nuts?

Steve Mocco 2 years ago

JD, you in trouble. Me Steve Mocco, me tough. You girlie-boy who no like wrestle. I man tiger who punch face. Once I punched old lady who laughed at me, and then I urinated on her dog. Me man tiger. I get Dlagnev next time. He know what he need do. If he winning match and there only 10 seconds left, he better charge straight at me with his hands up over his head so I get good shot for take down. At the Open he no do that, so I punch him three time and he cry like baby frog. I no cry. I man tiger.
