ceal had three different wrestlers at Mcdonough weight class... and saved the best for nationals... which he beat both.. it sort of a slap in the face from penn state...anyways ive seen iowa wrestlers get beat and the winner act worst toward the iowa staff and team... just saying... go hawks iowa stlye...

Well hopefully the loss to Robles has humbled him. As Mike Tyson said on The Ultimate Fighter, "If you're not humble, somebody will make you humble".

McDonough is good, but such a douche...

I love Coach brands::
Middle of Ramos' match after he is hit with stalling when Long is pushing in hard, "TURN THAT PACE ON HIM!" And Ramos does. And Ramos scores.

Like clockwork!

This is why I love wrestling, it was a great Dual and hope to see more like it. I am not a fan of either Penn State or Iowa, but I am now a fan of Wright of Penn State. That kid was no where near a 100% yet, but he put it on the line that evening for his team and his school. If you watched him in his last match before the Dual with Iowa, you could tell that he was still a long way from being healthy or least the wrestler he was in the past. Does he beat Gambrall when he is healthy, don't know. I am just speaking to the fact that he put it on the line that evening and gave all that he had. That is what I love about wrestling, guys giving all that they have for a the greater good of the team, win or lose. I believe that was lost on the evening when we just looking at win and loses. I hope I get to meet this young man one day, and shake his hand. This is what this sport is all about, teaching young men to be more than they are. Keep up the good Flo!!

I like how the interview started with the Penn State reporter, but then it looks like Brands noticed JoeFlo and switched his eyes to him. Flo gets the attention...awesome.

This is why National Duals needs to more than what it is now....incredible work by both teams.

Alton has nothing to worry about after this match. As i recall (correct me if i'm wrong) at the dual last year Marion lost to Adam Lynch in OT and subsequently made it to the National title bout.

He does need to abandon that stuff that used to work in high school though.
First off, I am a Hawkeye fan, thru and thru so this was difficult to write but I must do it.

I disagree on some points. If the coaches agreed with your statement, "Alton has nothing to worry about after this match..." they would be doing a great disservice to this young man. Much can be taken from this match from a critical standpoint (coaching perspective).
I also disagree with your statement saying Alton should "abandon that stuff (that) used to work in high school..." Why??? He has pinned a high percentage of people and has an OUTSTANDING record against D1 opponents using his honed techniques. I agree that opponents are studying a ton of film on him to defend those holds but more accurately I would say to continue using these holds BUT he must develop a primary leg attack and finish and also become a more polished mat wrestler. Training with David Taylor should do the trick, he will be fine.
But like I said last week, WE ARE IOWA AND YOU ARE NOT, end of story.

against tough competition, when you're trying to get around the only possible way to score is a butt drag. If you don't do a but drag you give the other man the opportunity to sit switch or granby. take it away and you will see a lot less takedowns in top college wrestling, and some matches between the top guys have very few takedowns as it is

Huge thanks for all of the great coverage Joeflo... on two subjects, first you guys have gotta be kidding regarding the handshake non-issue...and secondly,a request for Joeflo to please ban gay guys below like PHB and R from this site. Wrestlers don't go to their bathhouses and annoy them.

Realist 2 years ago

How many MORE fans could our sport have if the Hawks didn't grab the opponents' butts so much? Haven't we gotten enough bad press with the recent Buchanan High School butt drag case? Google it and you'll see it's everywhere. This move needs to be banned.

Alton has nothing but junk... hopefully he progress' but right now it's mostly garbage, can't defend himself against the top guys in the weight
Really? He's a true freshman and battled to a 4-3 and 1-0 loss against Russell the #1 ranked returning all american (2x big 10 champ) in fact he had him beat the first time in the scuffle semis but gave up a last second takedown.

Also, you don't end up ranked #5 without beating some studs especially with Penn States rigorous schedule. But whatever he won't be able to avoid the tough guys at Big10s or Nationals.. and he wont need too cause he can hang/beat em all. You should get to see a rematch with montell.

amazing matches. atmosophere was crazy. i would of paid anything to be there. match of the dual 141

That is also in bad taset, but, he did that only after DSJ repeatedly and intentionally poked him in the eye prior to that., numerous times. Very selective memory some of these iowa fan's have.

Top notch work, Joe Flo.

McD's forced handshake was pretty comical.

DrakeHS 2 years ago

But Taylor can bump and push post the match, THEN waive his hands up in the air, only to see his team lose and that sportsmanship is lost? McDonough did nothing that was in poor taste. Morgan was superbly slow to shake, McD wanted to get outta there, back to the lockeroom.

My point exactly. It is just they way they are, very narcissistic. Comes straight out of Brand's mouth, but Iowa fans will still try and say it's normal. No, it's only normal if you buy into that brand and style. There are many peopl who win, have won, and will win that do not need to carry themselves like that to win. Sure it wins team titles, but I would never want to teach my children to carry themselves like that.

A+ for Cams 2 years ago

love the assessment of the handshake. he is a leader and is a full product of the gablesque that brands continues to bring to the table.
"In order for me to be successful, or in order for one of my athletes to be successful, he better be an a**hole, he better be a dic*, he better be selfish, and he better be mean. It's you and the other guy out there. Win you live, Lose you die."

What does going out to win, no dominate, have anyththing to do with being a good sportsman? Wait for your opponent to shake his hand, if he isn't ready when you are too bad, wait another second lol. He didn't do anything wrong, but it was in poor taste.

Great job Iowa im not even an Iowa fan but love the energy and attitudes and now im going to be watching them allot more. Its a sport and you want to win especially love the attitude after the McDonough match on how he shook the kids hand, they are warriors and that was awesome why not have a little swagger and confidence they are in Penn States House in front of a huge crowd of Penn state fans and they shut them up seems to me McDonough was just letting the team know they were there to fight until the end and it was going to be a war.

of course some idiot is going to whine that marion was pinned....bottom line you got your butts kicked

Marion looked pinned.

I see all the Iowa haters crying about a handshake. A handshake? really? Here is what I notice about McDonough: He goes out to win..scratch that...he goes out to dominate. Once that is accomplished he relishes the moment as you can see him take it all in for a few seconds before the handshake. Then it's handshake and off the mat and on to the preparation for the next match. No time to dwell on your accomplishments. Love Iowa style. y. Ruthless. Dominating. Awesome!

They don't have different brains than people, they are just s.

1) I realize, Flo, you are only allowed five mins of highlights. However, I'm just curious as to why??

2) The McDonough handshake is a prime example of how Iowa's wrestlers have different brains than 99% of other people. They are trained to dominate and get off the mat. I love that he shook the kids hand the way he did. Though I'm not necessarily an Iowa diehard, I tend to root for them and enjoy the way the wrestle.
3) For a five minute clip/highlight, the quality is just fine. I know that I love Flo for being at all the big matches. Although it is a bummer that the business end of things wouldn't let this particular match get posted.
4) Having the Flo team as commentators for NCAAs would be the best thing EVER. It would definetely bring more excitement to some of those boring matches.

"Seriously on the McDonough handshake? I'll admit its awkward, but who cares." Shows poor sportsmanship if you cannot wait for the opponent to lift his own hand to shake it, instead you do it for him. Typical Iowa narcissism 'why the hell should I wait to shake his hand, I'll do it for him' type of thing.

I really enjoy you're guys' commentary. I wish you guys would get to do the commentary for the NCAA's. I like Tim Johnson, but Blatnick says some dumb things at times, and usually the play by play guy has no clue whats going on.
