1994 Iowa vs Penn state at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, Shawn Nelson (PS) didn’t make weight so Iowa bumped up #7th ranked Mike Mena to wrestle #3rd ranked Sanshiro Abe. Mena wrestled tough as a 118 pounder taking on 126lb #3 ranked opponent. Abe ended up 3rd at the NCAA’s this year and Mena went on to place 7th, 3rd and 5th and 2nd respectively ending up a 4 time All-American for the Hawkeyes. Abe was the 1996 National Champion and a 4x All-American (4-3-2-1) as well as 3x Big 10 Champion. A lot of D1 greats wrestling in this dual, Brinzer, McCoy, Sharratt, Mcllravy, Weber, Mena, McGuiness. I’m posting the entire dual under my videos.

No, those are the gable ultraflex. Nice shoes but the suede gets ripped up pretty quick.

Does anybody know what shoes Abe is wearing in this match? I had a pair in Jr. Hi (years ago) and can't seem to remember . . they were royal blue silver stripes (one-solid sole too)...they also made them in red and black and also gold stripes was an option...thanks for any info!

lol, if Kolat's tap was an unsportsmanlike move in the 134 match; how is Menna's not the same at 1:47 of this match?
i know. that was a totally chippy call.

Agreed, that call on Kolat was bogus. BTW, didn't McGinness come out of redshirt this season and wrestle?

Trivia Question: He is the only 4x AA for Iowa not to be a National Champ.
Incorrect. Mike DeAnna ('77-'81) was (3-6-2-RS-2).

Great takedown to finish the match. The Iowa crowd was all set to start their usual boo-stalling-boo-stalling routine and Abe nailed him.
