If you want to argue that having other in-state college programs to compete with makes it more difficult to recruit, then you will lose that argument, Coach D. It doesn’t matter how many D1 programs there are. What matters is how many BCS conference competitors there are in a state. Those are the only real alternatives for top-notch recruits. Nobody that Penn St. wants and offers a scholarship to would ever think about going to Lock Haven or Edinboro or one of the other schools in PA. However, Iowa does have to compete with Iowa State, a Big12 school and the 2nd all-time winningest program in college wrestling. For example, John Meeks from Des Moines is Intermats #1 kid at 138 – ahead of OH’s Nate Skonieczny. He’s going to Ames, not Iowa City, to wrestle. Also, Okie State has to compete with Oklahoma, another Big12 school.

While PA has so many D1 programs, what have they done? Produced some individual NCAA champs. There are 3 D1 programs left in Iowa. However, FOUR Iowa colleges have won the NCAA championship!!!! That’s frickin amazing! A school called Cornell has won a national championship, but it’s not located in New York. Cornell College from IA won it. And if you were to count voted-on titles like college football’s version of a national championship, Drake University was voted #1 one year during World War 2 but they didn’t actually hold an NCAA championship meet then.
Finally, when you say PA has the best high school wrestling, it depends on what you mean. PA has more top ranked kids than a state like Iowa, but it also has more than 4 times the number of people. On a per capita basis, Iowa is clearly a better wrestling state. There just arent as many potential wrestlers as in PA. BTW, Ohio has produced more #1 overall recruits in the past few years. David Taylor and Logan Stieber came from the Buckeye state.

Kudos to Flo for deleting any butt-drag scenes that otherwise hurt our sport in so many ways. In the past, Iowa has been too inclined to use that "move."

Va Tech not releasing guys had nothing to do with it. What are you talking about? They lost their freshman years, they still would have been seniors the year they were(2 yrs ago). Va Tech said all along, wrestle 1 year at Va Tech and the would release them, by the way. Put down the pipe anonymous wiseguy.

OK and Iowa have how many DI programs?...Right thats what I thought. PA has double digits in D1 College wrestling Programs. Pa also has... and has had the best High School Wrestling in the country for years. Before you bring up Blair look to see how many of thier guys are or have been PA guys.

Iowa and OSU are great programs...always have been always will be. ..but when you have few D1 schools in your state it's easy to get the best kids from your state. As of late where are OSU's National Champs comming from...PA. NJ, NY, CA, are all ligit. They are producing studs every year. I'm most impress with Illinois and Ohio in recent years. Having more teams win NCAA Titles makes it more fun to watch. I'd like to see Cornell get it done at some point. That staff have done a great job and the wrestlers have bought into that program.

If Iowa is 4th in Big Ten, how did they just beat an UNDEFEATED in B10 Minnesota team? They are 2nd - they will beat Ohio State when they meet up again.
They are weak??? They were ranked #1 in January. The only reason they are losing is that they had 2 guys finish 3rd and 4th at NCAA's last year and neither is scoring - one isn't in the lineup and the other just isn't wrestling well.
Wrestling power is in the east??? The states along I35 have won almost all the NCAA titles. Before Penn St., Az St. was the last team outside middle America to win the national championship in the 80's. And the only reason PennSt won it last year was that Va Tech didn't release the guys who followed Brands to Iowa. Their senior year would have been last year and Iowa would have KILLED PSU.

Ramos and Marion stalled their butts off. Marion is half the wrestler he used to be, too big of a cut. He will not AA.

I was watching live on the Big Ten Network yesterday. Sick (nasty) dual! Evans pin was the highlight for me. And McDonough: what a beast

IOWA is not a good team. At best they are 4th in big 10. Iowa has nothing for NCAA's - 125 should win NCAA. Ramos - 4th or 5th. Marrion - top4. Evans - AA probably. Nothing else.

I can't remember such a weak Iowa team. BTW...not only are they weak, they are boring. i'd rather watch paint dry than Loftus, 184, 194 and hwt.
Iowa is on the downside. Wrestling power now shifting EAST - PSU & OSU.

great dual. Thanks, Bader. You guys rock.
