Wade Schalles wasn't a starter his sophomore year of High School. He failed to make a commitment at a higher level. His mother, pushed Wade Schalles along to new heights by simply opening the door to possibilities and having him plant new goals and dreams for himself.

Great story, Mrs. Schalles must have been one heck of a mom. So many parents today are afraid to ask their kids to achieve. We are cheating the next generation out of success. |

Wade Schalles is one of my favorite wrestlers ever. I attended a small camp that he had in So Cal a few years back and it was probably the most fun i've ever had on a wrestling mat. he makes wrestling fun which is important to do. and all the while he pushes you to work hard. i learned a lot at that camp and its all really simple stuff that people overlook a lot. He was a great wrestler and probably the best pinner ever. and IMO would've pinned his way to Olympic title if he did not break his neck at the trials. he can still hack it today! |

I was on the Clarion wrestlling team (no varisty) when Wade was there at his peak. I witnessed him go down and up a weight class to defeat national champs. Saw him lay down on his back because the opponent was running away. The opponent jumped on Wade, where he did a leg elevator to reverse and pin, and also when he dragged the opponent onto to an x made of tape on the mat and pin him on the x. Nothing about wade is urban legend, he was the most creative wreslter ever. |

the 1976 olympic trials were held in cleveland ohio. after lee kemp beat dan gable he faced wade schalles. wade schalles gave kemp (1980 olympian boycotted by jimmy carter) his leg not once but twice and tossed him both times (air america). i think mr. schalles hurt his back or neck in that match but i don't rememberl if schalles finished the trials with his injury. this was backintheday when, if joe the plumber felt like he had a couple good ones left in him, he could go try out for the olympic team. what i saw that day was one of the most amazing wrestling matches i've ever seen. don't take my word on it, ask kemp, who was a great wrestler himself. and by the way, you sound skeptical about schalles's credentials which tells me that you don't know much about wrestling.Wade actually broke his neck wrestling Stan Dziedzic in the Olympic finals trials. The story is in a book called "THE TRIALS" by James V. Moffatt. Excellent book. Schalles went on to win the university world games, two silvers in the world cup. Wade also made the world Sambo team and earned a silver in the world championships. Wade beat Kemp 4-2 in the olympic trials. This story is also in "The Trials" Don't know if he ever wrestled in the world championships or not? |

Actually Wade is a four-time NCAA national champ. He was a champ in Div. 1 and Div. II competition. He also holds the Guinness World Records for most wrestling wins-831 and most wrestling pins 530. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it. |

It's now been 40 years since he won that PIAA title with the pin over John "Bimbo" Chatman. Wade was down, then elevated, and before we had a chance to blink Chatman was flattened. John had never been beaten (120-0, including bouts since 7th grade). There will never be anything to equal this feat. |
