First off, Dave Dean doesn't get a salary and two, the checks they write are in the thousands on a yearly basis to every college program. Right now they have a standing offer to send $100,000 over five yrs to the guy in Arkansas if he can get a D1 program down there as well.

Based on this Should it not be a question of reform? I could get on board with that. And lets not bring Rich Benders salary v/s what the #1 on the ladder gets into this mix. Cause there are a lot more factors. (Travel, tournament setup, training, ect) And while Dave Dean says he wrote checks to colleges how much were they for as opposed to his salary? Careful throwing those stones.
I agree more opprotunities at every level are needed to help wrestling, from Youth, to High School, to College, then to the olympics.
And maybe that is the problem with our sport right now... Ask any kid who is on a B-Ball court or F-ball field and he will say he wants to play in the NFL or NBA or MLB. That is the top level for the sport and where the best of the best are.
So why are we in wrestling settling for a state title, or a NCAA title? Why not have our kids setting the goal of being a world champion?

I was part of the Olympic dream back when there wasn't any money in it and the USA performed at a much higher level than it does now. Of course, the guys I wrestled with just loved the sport. By the way, it didn't matter who was the organizing body. AAU, USA, it didn't matter, not really.

Nobody is saying that the Olympic dream won't still exist. It just means more resources should be placed into things liek the Living the Dream fund and less expenses going to the admin getting their fat checks. Seems to me when USAW gets millions each year and the top guy on the ladder gets about $14,000 a year from it and guys like Rich Bender and others are sitting up top making $100,000 plus, there is something wrong with this supposed "Olympic" movement.

Under this new movement, more kids will be involved and benefit from the sport versus just a select few. How many college opportunities are there for kids versus Olympic opportunities? Our focus should be on college first, then the Olympic dream by the very, very small few who decide they even want to.

Serious Question:
Under Dave Dean's philosophy how do we support and maintain those Olympic dreams for athletes, get our great country to perform better at the Olympics and World Championships?

Keep up the fight Dave and any other state going NUWAY.

USAW is working overtime to try and shut this movement down. Don't bow down to their demands. Do the right thing and save wrestling!

Cali 3 years ago

That right, USAW is raping us. I hope we leave them and start taking better control of our tournaments and program.

Problem is, too many people are caught up in the same old paradigm and just want to have "business as usual." Which means, they are perfectly content with watching their programs die off, while they do nothing and let USAW continue to rape them.

MiGuy 3 years ago

You can join the mission or, just do whatever it is you are doing. Your choice.

Indiana and PA are still very new to the NUWAY organization. If they had been around sooner, they very well could've saved those programs from being dropped.

BTW, what has USAW ever done to help save a program? Nothing and they continue to do nothing.

Rose Alum 3 years ago

What about Rose Hulman in Indiana? Did HYWAY or NUWAY save that program?

Helping Duquesne 3 years ago

I am suprised that Dave did not mention about Duquesne dropping their program considering it is a NUWAY state. Is there any efforts to help that program out from NUWAY or PWJ?

Elliot Lewis 3 years ago

Embrace it! This is the paradigm shift wrestling has been waiting for!

Its already happening!!

Won't happen!!

Don't be surprised to see the entire west coast embrace NUWAY and drop USAW within the next couple of years.

CALI 3 years ago

USA wrestling in california is a joke. In our town we run some really good folkstyle tournaments, that I know USA wrestling want to take over or kill. When we have a freestyle tournament through usa wrestling, we provide the gym, the mats, the help and USA wrestling takes all the money because they run the bout room, which we can do better and faster.Robert Valero was a jv WRESTLER ALL 4 YEARS AND A STAT KEEPER.

There will always be haters, especially from the folks at USAW. Keep your head up Dave because in the end, you are doing what's right for wrestling. Other will soon follow and leave the haters behind.

Tea Party WAY !!! What a joke

If every state isn't on board with this, then you're clueless. There is not one thing Dave said that isn't true.

NUWAY Revolution 3 years ago

Cali man your right on. These guys are crooks. They steal tournaments from people, and focus more on golf and beer then on the kids. There building is just another way to steal from CA kids while our colleges die. Duane Morgan is going down.

""While some states charge NO state income tax, California charges the nation's highest. Consequently, fans there don't have as much disposable income for boosting secondary sports."

Wow, you have officially come up with the most piss poor reason why that state has failed its college programs. Talk about indirect and obscure. You might as well have said: "California has a Bear on its state flag and Bears dont like wrestling programs."
Another highly taxed state is Michigan!! of which California is about 4 times bigger yet it has less Division 1 college programs.
If California was such a good High School State they would have decent college programs, the fact is their kids arent that good on the high school level and wrestling in California is pathetic on the organizational level."
Please be respectful, you can make the same point with the rude demeanor.

Cali Man 3 years ago

FYI California has super huge folkstyle tournaments that generate over a hundred thousands of dollars. Yet how much Money did Dwayne Morgan(Owner of California USA Wrestling) and USA wrestling give to the colleges? Ask them $00000 The frosh/soph state tournament 1700 kids @ $40 plus the gate $15K to rent arena you do the numbers $120K in 2 tournaments zero to any colleges you know where it goes. To pay grant writers and to fund a building that Dwayne envisions his name on that they broke ground on with 1/100 of the money they need to build it. With no grants in hand they continue to take money from these super tournaments and dump it into this building. What about the money from this weekends tournament at a high school which cost maybe $3K to host? 800 wrestlers @$40 plus the gate plus hotel kickbacks = $40K profit where is that money earmarked for? Its not the national team trips our kids pay 100% of that $1300 to go to fargo $ 900 Jr Duals $900 Cadet duals.. Where is the money Dwayne Morgan. California is forming now SCWAY........ Time to take control from Dwayne Morgan and reinvest in our state... Not the Dwayne Morgan memorial building.

HYWA Wasn't a Savior 3 years ago

There was a college team in Indiana dropped last year, why didn't HYWA prevent it?

CA Wake up 3 years ago

California needs to wake the F up. Michigan has 4 college D1 programs and California has 3 now. They are pathetic. Michigan is in extreme economic Durress and no teams have been dropped. Dave Dean has got it figured out.
