Anthony Robles is the courageous Arizona State wrestler with one leg who just won an NCAA wrestling championship and an ESPY award. Anthony Robles addresses a question that people all over the country have been debating since he became a national story. Does having just one leg give Anthony Robles an unfair advantage because his opponents do not know how to wrestle somebody who is missing one leg, and in addition the weight that would be in leg is added muscle to his upper body.
Anthony Robles says it is not an advantage and nobody was bringing this up when he first started wrestling and was losing most of the matches he wrestled and was taking last place in his league. Anthony won an ESPY for best athlete with a disability.

The kid won one title in 4 years. Was beaten by quite a few different guys. Some of them were good, some have never gotten on the podium. He lost a total of 23 times. It's not like he was invincible. Some guys knew what to do, some didn't. This is a stupid argument by stupid ignorant people.

Benching 305 by 125 lbs is good, but my bet theirs other 125 lbs that can bench just as much. or more. It is his wrist and foreman strength that really makes him tough on top. Look at Robles pictures when he was a freshmen and sophmore, he gained alot of muscle by the time he reach his senior year. He had to work really hard on the weights during the off season to gain that muscle. The way he moves on one leg is incredible, but he was not alway like that. He adapted and work hard to become a NCAA Champion.

experiance. How many times has McD wrestled somebody with one leg?????? How many times has Robles wrestled somebody with 2 legs???????? I hate iowa and Mc D but if they wrestled 50 times i would put my money on McD to win 40 of those matches.
Robles has actually wrestled him a few times, and won them all. except for the one in the Natl finals

A lot of what you guys are saying is technically correct, but you guys fail to notice that the one leg he does have is a lot smaller than the average human leg and thats simply because hes always on crutches he never had the opportunity to build that natural strength by simply walking all day.. and watch any of his matches. That leg is tiny. Great wrestler, great person, great champion

I can't imagine it being particularly easy to balance on one leg for an entire match. Maybe I'm over thinking this, but that sounds like a slight disadvantage regardless of how strong his upper body is.

that was clasy gesture by Brands. Robles is a stud. Really thought he would win the hodge. He was so dominant.

You do realize Robles has lost over 20 times in his collegiate career? Of course he CAN and has been beaten. It's an understatement to say someone "might" have a chance to beat him.

You make absolutely no mention of his disadvantages!!!!! Robles has both advantages AND disadvantages. Ultimately, the wrestler with two legs has a higher ceiling in wrestling regardless of style.

The average human leg is 20% of the total body weight....So at 125 Robles has the rest of the body of 156lb wrestler...big advantage...

If a 160 lb wrestler only used one leg in a match against a 125 wrestler with two legs of equal wrestling skill and experience. The 160 lb wrestler would win almost every time...

The absence of one leg, prevented McDonough something to hold/grab on his go behind attempt.

Robles disadvantage off the mat is his advantage on the mat. Every wrestler is looking for an advanatge one way or another...greater speed, better technique or more strength. Robles has more strength than the average any 125lb d1 wrestler. Clearly an advanatge he used to win the ncaa championship far and square...

great job.

if its an advantage perhaps other wrestlers could fold one leg up and tie and then see if it really is

Anonymous Coward 2 years ago

They said that he maxed out at 305, but what they didn't mention is that McDonough maxed out at 285. Where is the disadvantage? Ohh...McDonough has both his legs. Why didn't McDonoughjack him up and toss him?

Anonymous Coward 2 years ago

Your comment about the upper body strength doesn't make sense. Everyone used to have a perception that "short stocky" guys made the best wrestlers. That was never true and the perception has changed. McDonough doesn't feel that his opponent had an unfair advantage and none were saying jack until he won an NCAA TITLE. They both weighed in at 125lbs.

I have seen more an more 1 one-leg wrestlers competing at 125. My younger brother pi$$ pounded more than a few kids at 125 in college. It takes a lot for these guys to even attempt to compete. This guy won an NCAA TITLE...Give it a rest...I was sad to see my Iowa boy loose but that's wrestling.

We know better than anyone that you have to expect anything. If he was preparing correctly then he would have prepared for this match better. They had all years to prepare to wrestle him the same time that he had to wrestle them.

I think he could have won it at any time. I think he waited until his senior year so it looked legit.

The truth is Anthony Robles won the NCAA's once! If Robles had an advantage over his opponents he never would have been beaten!

it is a disadvantage that he turned into an advantage. A guy with the mental toughness would have been dangerous whether he had 1 or 10 legs. It is called hard work.

Robles does have a distinct advantage. Try considering the extra muscle mass he has in his upper body compared to other 125 pounders. A leg is approximately 1/7 of your body weight. Transferring that muscle to his upper body while maintaining his weight at 125 increases his upper body muscle mass. There is no way to compare his muscular strength to a 2 legged opponent. His physical attributes will always give him a strength advantage. This would be the same in any weight class - for a wrestler to transfer his muscle mass because of the loss of a leg. Yet, even though he has the muscle advantage I love rooting for him, he is an amazing person - besides being an outstanding wrestler. His attack from the neutral position is snake like. I do think he can be beaten. If you can attack Anthony from a lower position and control his hips while riding him - I do believe that a truly great technician with a great deal of strength 'might' have a chance.

does he cut any weight

Anonymous Coward 2 years ago

He ACTUALLY weighs in at 125 just like everyone else. What are we going to start matching guys up by upper body strength now? I heard dozens of people this weekend saying how he has the upper body of a 160 pounder. Last I checked there was no penalty for being too strong. Great Job Robles.

Anonymous Coward 2 years ago

what does robles actually weigh??

Kurt Russell 2 years ago

Yea well he says in the beginning, his one less leg was being called by others a disadvantage & now it's being called by others an unfair advantage...whatever. Does this mean wrestlers all over the country are gonna chop off their leg to get an advantage? Hell no.

Brian Bonomo 2 years ago

It is an advantage having the body and strength of a 160 pounder in the 125lb class. But what an athlete and inspiration.

Hater 2 years ago

I'm glad this question was asked. Obviously, Robles is a very inspirational athlete and has overcome something that non of us cowards online could have done. However, coooooommmmmee oooonnnn. Look at that kids freakin upper body. What other 125lbs can bench 125? If you want to beat him, you gotta play his game, theres now way around it.

Whatever, im not here.

how can you not like this kid? Nice that Tom Brands congratulates him one minute in.
