Makes sense to me. Thanks. My old coach Billy Martin would have agreed I think. Maybe not exactly the same thing, but close I think. He quite often would stop practice and get everyone to stop and watch while he asked one of the wrestlers to show us all how he just did "that move" (he perched on his stool and watched . . . everything it seemed). Then he would get everyone to try it and after a lot of trial and error, the new move (if it passed muster) would be incorporated into his system. He and his teams were always innovating and improving . . . if it worked against the best guys in the room and it didn't have a high risk of a bad outcome . . . it became part of "the Granby system." PS I went to Norview, but he would let me sneak in and take part in their practice anytime I came over (the only two times I wrestled a Granby guy, I won using the techniques I had learned from Mr. Martin). |

I would live to wrestle jb he is a great competitor and it would be a fun match. Since blast doubles are my kryptonite it could get interesting. |

I need to go to an Askren funk camp! But what im hearing here is Ben vs Burroughs!!!something makes me think that if Jake Herbert doesn't have the ability to blast thru BAskren with power offense then JBurroughs doesn't either....at least not yet anyway. JBurr +15 lbs. and maybe i could see it happening. I like a good scramble and well executed funk as much as the next dog, but I have to play devil's advocate here. I wonder if the evolution to funky scrambling in folkstyle might be causing more knee injuries in the sport. Funk scrambling sure seems to put a lot of torque on the knee joints....and refs need to use quite a bit of discretion when it comes to calling potentially dangerous vs letting the scramble continue. I'd like to see a study related to pre vs post funk era knee injuries. |

Anonymous coward, Knowing that in your first sentence you told me I can't do something I have done hundreds of times makes it unimportant to read the rest of your post bc I realize you have not considered possibilities outside of your own experience. |

If you wanna get good at scrambling do Jiu Jitsu. Jiu Jitsu has helped my scrambles so much. |

Ben, right on brutha. I agree. TOO many haters when they need to learn the concept you're putting behind scrambling. |

you cant scramble through a blast double haha. now high crotch on the other hand, thats an easy scramble and difficult for the shooter to finish simply because of the angle. Yes freestyle is can look boring but so does every other sport if you put it that way. there are less scrambles cuz there are less high crotch shots and more doubles and head inside singles. also scrambling gives puts u in a position to give back exposure...thats why freestyle is "boring." maybe after "2010 worlds" we should stop woring about excitement of freestyle and come up with a new game plan to win some matches. In folkstyle tho....let the funk begin baby! PS mark perry was hardly an "IOWA wrestler"....he didn't fit there style at all. so of course he wrestled different. |

Martin, a couple years ago, Iowa has one wrestler in the finals at Big Ten...Mark Perry going against Ryan Churella. And guess what the Iowa guy is doing? |

makes perfect sense to me. not only that, but it really boils down to this... DOES IT WORK? If it works against high level competition, you can't argue against the concept. I love when people do things that aren't supposed to work, but they do. That's what creativity and sport evolution is all about. |

This is really good stuff. To work on the cutting edge of any andeavor requires creativity. I really like the idea Ben is talking about of both trying to perfect known techniques and also trying new things in practice. The experiments lead to new techniques. An effective experimental scramble one day becomes a passed on and learned technique the next. That's ingenuity and the source of progress. It's also why live wrestling is so key - because that's where creativity happens. It's the guys being creative and having fun that are moving the sport forward. |

Gotta agree with the sick, nasty Burroughs double comment. Also, have to agree that there really aren't many techinically sound "funk/scramble" masters in college right now, meaning Askren level. Also, I believe a team championship might not be the best way to question the effectiveness, or lack thereoff, for scrambling. As it would be very, very hard to put an entire team together of funkmaster scramblers, there just aren't that many who wrestle in such a style, yet. It is very possible, once that happens, such a team could possibly win a championship, but, it is all speculation at this point. |

Very articulate but I have some questions for the Funk Master. As a precursor to my statement I want to say that Iowa has won the last 3 NCAA titles without scrambling being a go to part of their style. So they are doing something right and I dont think that has anything to do with giving up easy takedowns. (This of course doesnt discredit Ben's point, but does put some perspective to it.)I think it's all about putting yourself in positions you're more familiar with than your opponent. Maybe there is more room for 'fundamental' defense, but also maybe 98% of the wrestlers are more familiar with ways to improve their position against your 'fundamental' defense so even though you could defend in a more traditional manner it doesn't make logical sense to do so. I'm pretty sure this is exactly what Ben did in his wrestling career. Maybe it was because he didn't have the best fundamental defense and had to scramble or maybe he just wanted to try something new. Either way, as he gained more knowledge in scrambling positions he realized is opponents didn't react well to being in certain scrambling positions or what's more, he knew how they would react in certain positions and always had a next technique based on their reactions. Cliffs: Put yourself in positions where you feel you have an advantage over your opponent. |
