Ben Askren gives his take on the USA wrestling situation and why they had a very unsuccessful year. He thinks the problem is that people think they have the answer when there is not just one answer, but an accumulation of things is why we are not having success.

Yup, one definite problem is that unlike other non-revenue sports out there, we are trying to promote three different sports. I mean, if we were field hockey and we wanted to grow our sport and compete for the world title, at least we could say, here's our sport, these are the rules, this is what we need to do. But, with wrestling, there is folkstyle, freestyle, greco, all the rules different, you wrstle them at different points of your career, there is no cohesiveness. |

Let's take the cash that we waste on the absurd project of women's wrestling and devote it to funding the wonderful and little known D3 collegiate wrestling programs like Montclair State (53 D3 All Americans and 7 D1 All Americans) that have been disbanded. It is an absolute joke that USA Wrestling would allow a programs like Montclair State and so many others to be shut down while pumping money into women's wrestling. Sadly, it's not surprising that the leadership of USA Wrestling has been infected by today's absurd "Diversity" culture. |

Rick Hahne, most of what MMA fighters pull from wrestling is balance and take downs. Freestyle emphasizes these things. Folkstyle wrestlers spend way too much time crawling around on all fours -- usually 2 to 4 minutes per match. That isn't helpful for MMA 'cause if you are crawling on all fours, you'll get freakin' thrown or pounced in some other way. |

Hey so what if Folkstyle doesn't make Olympic champions. It does make world champion fighters! Maybe we ought to thank MMA for giving our elite wrestlers another avenue finally! Guess what wrestling is a combat sport that prepares athletes to competeatthe highest level! |

Ben makes some great points -- there are lots of factors and no single answer. There is too much emphasis on folkstyle. If we want to catch up in a hurry, get the NCAA to evolve to Freestyle and ultimately have it so colleges can field Freestyle and/or Greco teams. Start with the push-out rule, neutral starts on out of bounds, etc. If NCAA starts wrestling FS and Greco, rest assured the HS kids will be wrestling FS and Greco to get prepared and recruited. As for the fear of the demise of our folkstyle, let it go people -- the rest of the world is wrestling FS and Greco and if we want to be the best we need to focus on it. We also need to expand upon what Dave Barry and Mike Novogratz have done with the Living the Dream fund. Our best guys should not be starving -- they should make a decent living and be incentivized to stick around for multiple Olympic cycles. |

Yep he nailed on the spot! Usa Wrestling wants to make money with the folkstyle tournaments and everything is called a national event. we just got back from preseason nationals in iowa. But hey im ok with folkstyle tournaments because folkstyle is what your kid has a better chance of getting a little help for college. Look at all the college money for wrestling D11 D1 heck you got a better chance of getting a partial ride to school than making a usa freestyle spot 7 spots is it compare to schoold dividing up scholarship money.. |

We finally have a professional product path in MMA, and you wanna cry about freestyle vs folkstyle? It's like saying "thanks but no thanks, NFL, ESPN, Nike, .....we'd rather 'keep it real' and play two hand touch at the park for the glory" |

I agree with a lot of Askren's points. To add to what he said, America spends more money on wrestling than any country in the world -- by a long shot. The thing is, 95% of that money goes to folkstyle (a style that, outside of school, is pretty much a dead end). The US sucks so bad at freestyle that I don't see us getting into the mix..ever. People will just hold on to the dead horse (folkstyle) until it's gone. |

PA, you are delusional if you think folkstyle has a chance to be exported and become an olympic sport. For heaven's sake, we can hardly keep interest in folkstyle in America. College programs are being cut every year, and outside of the midwest, attendence is at events is low. One thing we need to do is cut the folkstyle season, put more money in freestyle. Maybe even make freestyle a college sport. |

He is right that there are many solutions to USA wrestling.I bet brands bros, Gable, etc have grossed millions. They just live differently and don't give a . I hoenstly think wrestling needs more coverage in general. I was watching universal sports today and gymnastics was on TV. The 1990's saw a boom in gymnastics because the miracle team. Wrestling needs a miracle team to dominate an get that coverage. Ben, get some steaks on that face brother. |

I like a lot of what he said, no one answer unfortunately. |

He mentions that the money is in folkstyle tournaments in the offseason and that is because it is more marketable because it is the American version of wrestling. Same as football and baseball derived from a foreign sport but was Americanized and is a huge success. Making freestyle a popular form of wrestling in the U.S. faces the same uphill battle that Rugby and Cricket fans have when trying to make their sport more mainstream. Eliminating folkstyle in scholastic wrestling to be replaced with freestyle would kill the sport as we know it. |

Bag FS/GR, bag MMA. Some promoter needs to have the guts to try a professional folkstyle tournament series with good prize money (like Hargobind except bigger $). Bite the bullet for a year or two, grow the attention and see what happens. No one ever thought X-games/Dew Tour/etc would go anywhere and now it is rolling. |
