Kellen Russell versus Andrew Alton, their 3rd meeting in the 2010-2011 season.
Should a ref call a wrestler for stalling if their entire style is defense and counter moves? In my opinion, the crowd at the NCAAs is going to influence the refs to call stalling on Kellen. If he wrestles Marion the forward attack is not going to stop like Altons. If Kellen doesn't counter to points early, Marion is going to beat him. Depending on the seating we could see Alton and Montell in the finals. I'm not sure if Alton can change his style, but he needs to stop setting up moves from hand fighting when he wrestles Kellen. Kellen's defense is too difficult to get through and he feels the attack coming. He needs a John Smith low single from a free stance. If Alton can get ahead by 3 in the 2nd period and open up Kellen's defensive posture, he will beat him.
Russell's obviously strong & is good in the hand control. AA's duckunder would have gotten most anyone else but KR was out in 2 seconds. I think the only way AA beats him (and I think he is capable of doing it) is by out-thinking him AND by just simply elevating his game, (which is just going to take time).Sometime in the weight room wouldn't hurt, (working on hand & ar strength).AA has done a good job with his throws & moves off his feet to the point where even when some guys know what is coming & counter it, AA is set up to hit a move off the counter. He has decked more then a few guys off their counters this year.Against Marion, AA admitted he gassed & just couldn't fight off MM. Don't think that happens next time.KR @ this point looks like the man to beat. The only thing I think that will beat him is someone faster then him. BUT He doesn't burn a lot of energy in match & looks for openings instead of creating them so he won't be running out of gas in a match anytime soon. I think he could have AAed last year @ 149 & we all know how crazy that weight was last year.Against MM I see KR again using his hand control to prevent shots &grinding;out a win but if anyone has a chance to beat KR this year, so far from what I have seen it would be MM.
