The current NCAA system seeds the top 12 wrestlers and the rest are drawn in. Brian Smith explains why he would like to see the seeding move to top 16 seeded.
Winless Winners- seeding more wrestlers will NOT increase the number of wrestlers who go winless at NCAA's... Assuming that brackets remain capped at 33 wrestlers per weight class, there will still be the exact same number of winless wrestlers per weight class regardless of how many are seeded. There will always be 8 wrestlers at each weight class who exit the tournament without a win. This is true whether no wrestlers are seeded or even if all wrestlers are seeded...The only thing seeding 1-16 would do (as opposed to current seeding 1-12), is make it less likely that two tough kids match up in the first round. "Tough" being especially relative when talking about NCAAs.
Its a good idea, fair for individual wrestlers, fair for team scoring, and easy to implement...if this was FILA, I'd say no chance of it ever happening; if this was USAW, I'd say top administrators would go into a backroom and emerge with a political decision based on their own self-interests rather than what would be good for the sport overall. However, maybe NCAA and coaches can get it right (I will keep my fingers crossed!).
