Florida isn't where most of the elite college wrestlers come from, yet Brian Smith, like every thing else he did, found a way to become great within the sport. He won state titles in Florida his junior and senior year. His passion and drive for wrestling led him to a Michigan State program that had seen better days. Although he wasn't in the best environment at Michigan State, he worked for success and came close to becoming an All American.

After college there was no question that Brian Smith was going to become a high school wrestling coach. No one could have expected, however, that in 9 years he would be the head coach of the University of Missouri.

When Coach Smith arrived, the University of Missouri program had been in and out of the top 25 in the country and consistently in the cellar of the Big 12. Coach Smith changed that and built a team and program that placed 11th in 2005 and scored a school record for team points in 2006 for a 15th place finish. His teams have been moving up the ladder at the national tournament every year with more and more points. They are now and have been, on the verge of breaking into the top 10 and contending for a national title.
