Folkstyle and freestyle both have their disadvantages, in folkstyle at higher levels i believe it's more entertaining because of the top and bottom moves that can be preformed. you can do more rolls and tilts, but if one person is a staller on bottom or if they are terrible it's boring. In freestyle people just take less risks.lol. |

Anonymous Coward said: "Freestyle is no longer wrestling." This is what Americans scream anymore because they cannot control the rule changes. The change from coin flip to ball grab="Freestyle is no longer wrestling." The change from one, five minute period to the best of three, two minute periods="Freestyle is no longer wrestling." The clinch="Freestyle is no longer wrestling." Last I checked, single legs, double legs, head locks, drags, trips, leg laces, gut wrenches, chest locks, etc. are all part of the sport. If none of that is wrestling, then what is it? |

This was an interesting match. As much as I would like to say Cael was cheated, I can't Honestly, the Russian was the better wrestler on this day. All you folks sayin' it was bad refereeing are making the USA look like poor sports. The Russian was slicker and had better balance. Simple. Cael is not denying that. But hey, Cael will be back and will certainly rock the house next time! |

I agree with steve...I'd say Moomac is right. And to the Anonymous Coward right below me denying that culture and ethnicity comes into play in this sport: you have your head buried in the sand. I am a white dude and I think the wrestling community is great for all people. But we've got work to do, too, and there is no doubt in my mind that Americans whining about the rules all the time has some xenophobic overtones....among other things. |

Moomac is not right, Steven. Actually, those statements are only fair evaluations. Can you honestly say that Caldwell has a better tank the Metcalf? That has absolutley nothing to do with race, but with the style that they wrestle. If you honestly think that Americans are unhappy with freestyle because we think we are so much greater than others, than I would venture to say you do not watch too much wresting. I dont think it has anything to do with who we are wrestling, but the governing body is KILLING the sport. |

moomac, you hit the nail on the head. I am a bit surprised that Martin made such a comment about Americans being 'averse to freestyle.' I really enjoy freestyle and would have done it more had I had the opportunity. Freestyle is one of the two internationally accepted styles. By contrast, folkstyle is an American school game, and people not associated with school rivalries don't come to watch -- except maybe family members of the wrestlers. Nothing against folkstyle, but it doesn't exist in any substantial way beyond the walls of high schools and universities. Moomac is right when he says that " the US is being dominated by groups of people that we as Americans are programmed to think are innately no good as people and are inferior to we Americans." So true. We Americans need to stop sniveling and start wrestling. And the USA team this year starting taking us in that direction! Marvelous job Team USA!!!!!! |

"This match is the exact reason American's have an aversion to freestyle."Enter your comment... Come on Martin be serious. You and I both know those from the US who are aversed to freeestyle are so because we are unfamiliar with it or simply because we are not dominant at it.Furthermore the US is being dominated by groups of people that we as Americans are programmed to think are innately no good as people and are inferior to we Americans. (Muslims ,Russians commonly refered to "Commies" , Cubans ...)This inacurate and ridiculous mind set then leads to sick weak minded excuses as to why we are not winning. ie (it must be the rules, conspiracies .....) This same thing occurs domestically if the one who is winning does not fit the stereotypical idea of one who is expected to be a winner. Attempts at disparagement comes to mind whith African American wrestlers who beat the home town heroes. It is almost never that the African American was just a better wrestler, instead its that the other guy just had a bad day, the ref screwed up the call..... The one that really gets me perturbed is the expressed idea that black athletes supposedly lack conditioning. And the next time Howe wrestles Burroughs, Caldwell wrestles Metcalf, Jenkins wrestles whoever the black athlete will loose cause hes got no gas in his tank. All this is done to justify why the home town hero will win the next time and if he dosent he is still better than the :"Other" because he works harder and is therby obviously more virtuous |

Soupcan, folkstyle is not cut and dry. And the stall rule is ridiculous. There's more stalling in folkstyle than freestyle, that's for sure. The thing about freestyle is that it is tactical. You can be defensive. You can be offensive. But you must have a tactical plan. Folkstyle is full of feigned aggression to look macho for the ref and coaches, and lots of rolling around on the mat. Take the last NCAA finals at 149lbs: Dake and Molinaro rollled around on the mat for 6 minutes!!!!!!! I have never in my entire life seen something so absurd and boring. |

Saritov just about had the TD at the end of the second, I guess time expired . I didn't think Sanderson scored in the clinch. I know some refs will blow the whistle VERY early in a clinch situation, especially when an athlete lands on his hip, but that's not something you can count on. |

This is why Americans have a hard time getting behind international wrestling. In folkstyle things are cut and dry - if you don't do much, you get hit for stalling - if you score a takedown, it gets awarded. International freestyle is too arbitrary. What if Cael decided that his stategy would be to go on the defensive? What would the Russian do? He never took a shot. |

Martin, you're right---the ref did give him only a point, and I was mistaken. In that sense, it was not a good call in my opinion. He should have had 2. In viewing the video again, I can't seethe ref or the number of points he awards, but it looks like he raises his hand for a takedown the first time Cael's head hits the mat. Either way, it's points. |

It looks like a take down to me at 3:15, and then maybe some back exposure a few seconds later...hard to tell. The ref called the take down, but for some reason missed the exposure. Either way, Cael lost fair and square. BTW Martin, many Americans love freestyle, so speak for yourself, not the country. It's much more exciting than folkstyle, which is pretty much a Rambo macho-man exhibition. Freestyle is about smarts. Jordan Burroughs seems to get that. |

They did not call it exposure. They gave him 1 point meaning a takedown. If it was exposure it would have been 2 points. Look at the box score. Jimbo Slice, you cant even find the point where Cael was taken down yet think the guy made Cael look like a beginner. This match is the exact reason American's have an aversion to freestyle. |

CFK, I offered my reasoning in my first post. Anonymous Coward, who posted immediately after you, articulates my impression in different words. It's not like Saritov mopped up the mat with Cael, but he was able to stop Cael consistently throughout the match and then take advantage of scoring opportunities. |

CFK, Cael wasn't dominated in the way folkstyle wrestlers think of domination, but Saritov was in command the whole match for sure. The only way you'd understand that is if you follow Russian wrestling tactics. Saritov played the game smoothly and soundly. Cael wasn't able to get anything going offensively, and Saritov beat Cael offensively and defensively in the clinch. I wish I could say those were bad calls, but each time I watch the video I am more and more convinced the ref made good calls. No worries....Cael will improve and have another shot next year. |

Jimbo, you are an idiot. Where did Cael get dominated? The score in the first period was total BS. When did he actually establish control? Then in the 2nd period Cael broke him down and was in the dominant position yet the ref does not call the score and allows them to continue. Your crap about Cael being outclassed is ridiculous. |

Help me out where is the takedown in the first period clinch? Im a very uneducated freestyle fan of usa wrestling. Walk me through it letting me know the exact second there was a takedown. Thanks |

Saritov is probably the weakest link on the Russian team, and 84kg in general hasn't been the most dynamic weight the past few years. Still, Cael clearly isn't wrestling like the top guys....yet. It's Cael's first time back in 7 years...he'll adapt and learn and come back to win Gold in 2012...I'm sure of that. But in these matches this year, I could definitely see Cael wasn't up to the task. In this match Cael wasn't able to get anything going. Even though it was close point-wise, Cael was dominated. He lost both clinches -- offensively and defensively. And I am sure the ref was fair. That's exactly how I would have called the match. |
