John Smith compares the process of learning a wrestling move to that of a scientist experimenting in his lab. He had a work in progress that he was continually tweeking and making better. What made it so appealing to him was that he knew he was on the verge of creating something that would help him to become the best wrestler in the world.

Great interview! I always like hearing John Smith talk. Coach Smith talks about how he initially relied on his speed to get his low single in college but what also should be noted is that John Smith had a gorilla like grip once he got in and got his hands on that leg. I have a friend who once wrestled with John Smith in the 80's in an open practice when Oklahoma State practiced with a local juco team near campus and my friend said that his forearms were very strong and his grip was just gorilla strong once he got in on your leg... |

To become the best at anything you MUST have the same passion you hear in his voice. That's why he was awesome. This isn't just about the low single, it's about life. Few, have the ability to reach that level of passion. |

IndyRR put it very well: "Keep the labs open"! It is a great analogy Smith makes and is aplicable to many other things in life. The whole process Smith explains has been described by many other highly successful people, on the brink of a cutting edge breakthrough and being inspired by the whole process. A couple of years ago another coach mentioned the book, Outliers, regarding a flow video. It sounded interesting- focusing on the factors that contribute to people achieving greatness- or not. I read it and I thought of how many great wrestlers explained this same inspired process: Dave Schultz, Gable, Douglass, and Smith in this video. |

All these years later, still one of the best vids ever shot for Flo. The topic, the chemistry, the excitement. Clearly Smith was just waiting for someone to ask him all this. We could go another twenty years without another wrestler doing this, and yet it was like no one had even asked him before Flo did. At the time, Flo was Martin in a freaking van with his cheeseburger breath and a little camera, and yet John Smith was willing to sit down with him and talk about all of this. Why? Because there was no one else asking. No one. |

In light of all the buzz generated from Cael, it's still fair to say this man is still the best wrestler ever to walk on American soil. |

That nose has paid the price for all those low singles. :-). Seriously.... great story of a move (and a wrestler) that has revolutionized wrestling. It must be a great feeling to contribute something original to a sport. |
