This AA State Finals match takes place at Hersheypark Arena, Hershey, Pa. in 1989 between Cary Kolat (Jefferson Morgan) vs Tony Owens (Tyrone)

This match began a PA legacy that vaulted Cary Kolat's career to arguably one of the, if not the best high school wrestling career ever. Cary Kolat vs. Tony Owens PA State finals Kolat's freshman year.

Kolat wins this match by fall in the 3rd period in a dominating fashion.

Kolat won OW all four years at states. Some people thought that John Hughes should have won it Kolat's junior year. It was Hughes' fourth title, but how could you argue with the decision when Cary pinned a returning state champ in about a minute , and he did it with the exact same move that he used in this match. I believe the kids name was Steve Budman. Kolat only ever had 6 matches go the distance in his high scool career, unbelievable!!!

Cary's ultra agressive style was both a blessing and a curse. I'm not sure how many college matches he lost,not many, But I would be willing to bet that he was leading going into the third period injust about all, if not all of them. He had such an aggressive style that he would often wear himself down in the later part of matches. Not till later in his career did he start to even out the pace a little and we all know what happened then.

I heard from several sources this year there were people 4-5 pounds over at Dapper Dan and they let them wrestle. We all wanna see those marquee match ups its not like they are gonna turn big names away if they don't cut.

I heard that Bono didn't make weight for the dapper dan but they let him wrestle any way...and showed up at senior nationals soon after up a weight class where Kolat easily won and Bono placed lower...They didn't see each other.

Good stuff, although this really didn't launch his HS career. That would be his performance at the California University Christmas Tournament (Now Powerade) when he beat 3 returning state medal winners including 2 former state finalists.

Kolat is probably the best high school wrestler there was at that time and i thought bono only tied him
