Dr. Goldberg I saw you wrestle and you were good. However, Simons never did much for the ISU TEAMS he coached. When you have an opportunity, post his coaching at ISU acommplishments. It is amazing that Coach Sanders who was never a wrestler had championship teams. One could probably speculate that if Gray did not use ISU as a stepping stone he might have proved his value.enough said about a great wrestler who was fair as a coach.

What he says about learning through teaching is critical.

I had the privilege of being co-captain with Gray our senior year at Lock Haven. He not only taught me to become a better wrestler, but a better man as well. I will always remember Gray as a great wrestler but an even greater human being! Gray made our entire team the best it could possibly be with his leadership and skills.. Thanks Gray!!

This guy is a living legend. More of our younger wrestlers need to know about Coach Simons ... the man is one of the most impressive people you'll ever meet, and incredibly humble. Coach, you rock!

The best way to learn anything is to teach it. lecture 10% lecture with notes 20% .... teaching 80% or higher.

Simons is a role model all around on and off the mat! As I admire him for being one of the best college coaches and even a wrestler himself. As I have learned quite a lot from him when I wrestled for him back in the days!

I spent some time with Gray Simons at my college coach's camp in the late 60's. Simons was working with Mark Payne from Sidney NY, who was very talented, although Simons could completely take him apart. He showed a slick little "rethread" set-up for armdrags from the feet, and as I looked over their shoulders, I picked it up and was able to use it successfully probably 10-15 times in my college matches, including against the Penn State wrestler in the EIWA. It is absolutely amazing how many great wrestlers Billy Martin produced, especially coming from an area that was really a wrestling backwater at the time when compared with NY, PA, and Iowa and Oklahoma. What a great coach he was.

I didn't start wrestling until the 10th grade at Granby High School. Billy Martin sr. was my coach. Right from the beginning he told me that I was behind and needed to work extra hard and extra long to be the wrestler he thought I could be. Part of that extra was Gray Simons. All of Granby's wrestling alumni were regularly in our wrestling room and required by Coach Martin to coach and teach guys like me all the new advanced college ideas. Gray was my size and he basically adopted me as his project. It was my great fortune to have him teach me, wrestle me and take me with him to numerous clinics all over the East throughout my high school and college years. We are good friends, but then it was student and master. He was a most incredible wrestler and a great teacher for a young guy who wanted to learn everything. One of my greatest compliments as a young college wresyler was to have several people tell me I wrestled and looked like Gray. I would aleays say there is nobody like Gray Simons! Thanks for everything Gray.

I wrestled for and with Coach Simons for 4 years. There is nothing that I can ever do or say that can express my appreciation for everything that Gray did for me. He is without a doubt one of the truly great teachers in our sport. Gray thanks for being my coach, Dennis Goldberg.

In 1968 I had the good fortune to spend a wrestling season with Gray at Lock Haven. I learned a great deal from him in that one season. He is truly one of the best, if not the best technician that had the honor to be exposed to. Enjoy your retirement.

I wrestled for Coach Simons and he has got to be the best technician that one could ever be around. He taught me so much that I pass on now to my wrestlers- and some great stories and little jokes that go along with the moves. A truly great man and great coach.
