CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- North Carolina's wrestling program has signed eight prep standouts from six different states to National Letters of Intent, head coach C.D. Mock announced Monday. This group, which features seven wrestlers in the lighter weight groups, will join the Tar Heel program in the fall and will be eligible to compete for Carolina in the 2008-09 season. "With the exception of heavyweight, we decided to focus our recruiting this year on building depth at the lighter weights," said Mock. "We are only losing one starter this year, so it is a great opportunity for us to add depth and build for the future. Arizona State discontinuing three varsity programs
TEMPE, Ariz. -- In response to economic realities experienced over a long period of time, Arizona State University today announced the discontinuation of three varsity sports programs, effective immediately. The sport programs affected are men's swimming, men's tennis and wrestling. ASU President Michael Crow and Vice President for University Athletics Lisa Love made the announcement. With the budget cuts the University is facing, Intercollegiate Athletics cannot expect the University to make up the difference. This move reduces the number of varsity sports sponsored by ASU to 20 from 22. The move will not affect men's diving. ASU will continue to fund football, men's and women's basketball, baseball, softball, men's and women's golf, me

The Cardinal recognized numerous wrestlers with team awards and bid farewall to seniors Tanner Gardner, Josh Zupancic, Phillip Doerner, Bobby Pease and Mark Shughart. For the fifth consecutive year, Oklahoma State wrestling was recognized as a National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Academic team. The 2007-08 Cowboys compiled a team grade point average of 2.904 and placed three individuals on the All-Academic team in Brandon Mason (biology/pre-med), Newly McSpadden (applied sociology) and Nathan Morgan (civil engineering). Junior Kyle Bressler was named to the 2007-08 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-Academic Team, and two more wrestlers have signed National Letters of Intent. Bressler, a construction engineering major, was the lone Oregon State wrestler named to the All-Academic Team.

Steven Fitzgerald of Clovis, Calif., has signed a letter of intent to wrestle at Northern Iowa next season. Fitzgerald was 56-4 and placed third at 125 pounds in the California Interscholastic Federation tournament last winter. He was a three-time state qualifier, competing at 103 pounds in 2006 and at 112 in 2007.
