Stanford celebrates season with annual awards banquet
The Stanford wrestling team celebrated a season of successes last night with the team's annual awards banquet. The Cardinal recognized numerous wrestlers with team awards and bid farewall to seniors Tanner Gardner, Josh Zupancic, Phillip Doerner, Bobby Pease and Mark Shughart. The night began with recognition of the winners of the Tod Surmon award, presented to the wrestler with the most outstanding performance in a home dual meet. In 2007-08, the winners were Gardner, Zack Giesen and Jake Johnson for Cal State Bakersfield on Jan. 24, Johnson for Portland State on Jan. 25, Porfirio Madrigal for Menlo College on Jan. 25 and Gardner, Zupancic and Luke Feist for Cal State Fullerton on Feb. 10. Oklahoma State Wrestling Honored For Team Academic Success
For the fifth consecutive year, Oklahoma State wrestling was recognized as a National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Academic team. The 2007-08 Cowboys compiled a team grade point average of 2.904 and placed three individuals on the All-Academic team in Brandon Mason (biology/pre-med), Newly McSpadden (applied sociology) and Nathan Morgan (civil engineering). All three Cowboys sport GPAs above 3.30.

In three seasons as head coach at Stanford, McCoy transformed the Cardinal into a national contender after inheriting a team that went 6-8-1 in 2004-05. The Oregon State wrestling program got a boost. Junior Kyle Bressler was named to the 2007-08 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-Academic Team, and two more wrestlers have signed National Letters of Intent. Bressler, a construction engineering major, was the lone Oregon State wrestler named to the All-Academic Team.

Steven Fitzgerald of Clovis, Calif., has signed a letter of intent to wrestle at Northern Iowa next season. Fitzgerald was 56-4 and placed third at 125 pounds in the California Interscholastic Federation tournament last winter. Senior Dave Nakasone and sophomore Manuel Schubert have been named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division I All-Academic wrestling team, the NWCA announced on Thursday. Both wrestlers enjoyed success both on the mat and in the classroom in 2007-08 and are two of 88 Division I wrestlers named to the team. To be eligible wrestlers must have at least a cumulative GPA of 3.2 and be a NCAA qualifier or have been a starter and won 60 percent of his matches.

Maryland hands out season awards
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Maryland wrestling team handed out its awards for the 2007-08 season at the annual awards picnic at Epping Forest Club House in Annapolis on May 3. Sophomore Hudson Taylor was given the John McHugh Most Outstanding Wrestler Award for the second-straight season after becoming the first Terrapin All-American since 1997. Taylor finished the season with a 37-3 record at 197 pounds and his third place finish at NCAAs was the best for a wrestler at Maryland since 1992. His win total was tied for the most in the ACC and tied for the eighth highest in all of Division I including every weight class. Eighteen of his wins came by fall which tied for third nationally. Taylor won the 197 pound title at the ACC Championship

FARGO, N.D. -- Three-time Minnesota state qualifier Will Johnson of Hibbing High School has signed a National Letter of Intent to wrestle and continue his education at North Dakota State University. Head coach Bucky Maughan made the announcement today. Johnson is the ninth high school wrestler to commit to North Dakota State this year. FARGO, N.D.--The North Dakota State wrestling team and 197-pound junior Jacob Bryce were named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association's annual All-Academic Top 30 and individual All-Academic Team for the 2007-08 season. The American and Duke University wrestling teams have been recognized by the National Wrestling Coaches Association as the 2007-08 champions of the classroom, having attained the highest team grade point average of Division I wrestling programs, association officials announced Thursday. The wrestling team is the first in AU school history to have the highest team GPA in their respective sport. Senior Dave Nakasone and sophomore Manuel Schubert have been named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division I All-Academic wrestling team, the NWCA announced on Thursday. Both wrestlers enjoyed success both on the mat and in the classroom in 2007-08 and are two of 88 Division I wrestlers named to the team. To be eligible wrestlers must have at least a cumulative GPA of 3.2 and be a NCAA qualifier or have been a starter and won 60 percent of his matches.

2007-08 NWCA Division I All-Academic Wrestling Team The National Wrestling Coaches Association has announced its annual Division I All-Academic Top 30 and Individual All-Academic wrestling teams for the 2007-08 season. Duke University finds itself at the head of the class for the second straight year, but the Blue Devils have company. American University tied Duke for the top team GPA with a 3.335. For teams to be eligible for consideration, teams comprise 12 student athletes, including the 10 wrestlers that were the entries in the NCAA tournament conference qualifier.
