The UD Wrestling Team placed 3rd at the Cornell Invite with 4 finalists
(Ryan Warcnyski (157), Josh Terrell (165), Logan Einerson (184), and Sam
Johnson (197). Josh Terrell claimed the Outstanding Wrestler Award and
was listed as the IIAC Wrestler of the week. Josh opened the
tournament with a 17-2 technical fall over Cornell's Dan Gratz and a
20-7 major decision over Wartburg's Brennan Drew, then topped No.
10-ranked Landon Williams of Wartburg, 9-2, in the semifinals. In the
final, he upset #2 NCAA ranked Orlando Ponce of Augsburg, 3-1, in
overtime to move his overall record to 23-2 and his mark against DIII
competition to 16-1. Ryan, Logan, and Sam finished 2nd in their
respective weight classes.

University of Dubuque Wrestling Fans:

The University of Dubuque wrestling team came in ranked #10 at the NCAA
Duals this weekend in the NCAA Duals, however the team was unable to
place in the top 8 this weekend at the NCAA National Team Duals. Three
light weights were out of the starting line-up (Senior Andre Taylor
(125), Freshmen - Christ Divito (125) and Eric Powell (141).
First year wrestlers gaining experience in their first NCAA National
Duals: Adam Shumaker (FR) 125, Ben Schneider (FR) 141, Michael
Butterfield (FR) 149, Derek Mizzaur (FR) 149, Derek Minch (FR) 174, Dan
Howell (FR) 197, David Vinton (FR) HWT & Tyler Hoerner (1st Year -FR)
HWT gained valuable experience.
Josh Terrell (SR) went undefeated 3-0 for the day @ 165.
The remainder of the NCAA Dual line-up was made of:
Chris Sokol (JR - 133), Derek Smith (SO - 133), Ryan Warcynski (SO -
157), Logan Einerson (SO - 184), Sam Johnson (SO - HWT).
Eric Powell is expected to be back in the line-up @ the next
competition for the UD Spartans @ the Cornell College Matman Wrestling
Invitational held on Saturday, January 15, 2011. Andre Taylor (125),
Christ Divito (133), and Chris Ketchum (165) are still healing up and
will not compete this weekend. Other UD wrestlers expected to compete
along with the NCAA Duals team include: Chase Holloway (125), Kris
Powars (149), Jake Hicks (157), Josh Lewis (157), Zach Altman (157),
Manny Mendoza (157), Matt Manning (174), Joe Shue (184), Andrew
Arrendall (197). Schedule for the weekend at Cornell is below:

UD Team has no organized training scheduled and is off for the week of Thanksgiving - Break (November 21-27)
and the week of Christmas - Break (Dec 19-27) - plan to spend time with family and cross training.

University of Dubuque Wrestling Banquet

On Sunday, May 2nd the University of Dubuque Wrestling Program held their annual post season awards banquet.
The Spartans celebrated a great season this year posting the programs best season in the history of the University (8th place at the NCAA Championships). The Spartans finished 3rd in the very competitive Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Team Duals, top 16 in the NCAA National Duals, 2 IIAC Champions (Josh Terrell & Evan Brown), 3 NCAA Qualifiers (Ryan Warcynski, Josh Terrell, and Evan Brown), 2 NCAA All-Americans (Evan Brown – 2nd in NCAA’s , Josh Terrell – 3rd in NCAA’s) and one NCAA Academic All-American (Josh Terrell)
The following individual awards were given at the banquet:
Hardest Worker Award - Evan Brown
Academics & Athletics Excellence Award - Josh Terrell
Mental Toughness Award - Ryan Lessner
Most Improved - Ryan Warcynksi
Most Valuable Freshmen - Ryan Warcynksi
Outstanding Iron Man Backside Points (NCAA Award) – Josh Terrell
Outstanding Wrestler - Evan Brown
Jim Fox Perseverance Award – Ryan Lessner & Mark Schultz
Evan Brown who was named University of Dubuque Male Athlete of the Year at the All Sports Award Banquet.
Evan Brown will leave his mark on the University of Dubuque’s Wrestling Program, after his 4 year career as a Spartan he will leave the program as the first NCAA Champion since 1972, and a 2X IIAC Champion, a 2X NCAA All-American, 3X NCAA Qualifier, UD Wrestling All-Time Career Wins Record (124 Career wins), a 2X NCAA Academic All-American, and 2 year captain. Evan was very important to our program and has lead the program to 2 top 12 NCAA Championships Team Finishes and 4 NCAA Top 30 Team Finishes. And in his senior season, he helped lead the team to the program’s best NCAA finish in the 28 years of the program.
We would also like to congratulate the seven graduating seniors on the UD wrestling team for the highest NCAA finish (8th) in the history of the school – Special Thanks to seniors: Ryan Lessner, Mark Schultz, Evan Brown, Jacob Durbin, Anderson Sainci, Chris Shiewe, and Josh Terrell.
